To all of you interested in getting into SAP, it is a good area to get into, for technology people have a look at BASIS for Developers have a look at ABAP and for Business people have a look at any of the core functional areas.
BASIS is a lot easier if you have background in Network administration and know database management
ABAP is a lot easier if you come from a programming background especially JAVA is very beneficial
FUNCTIONAL is a lot easier if you have some business process knowledge in a particular area

New Dimenesion things like BW CRM are also areas worth looking at
BW has 2 area functional designers that build information and write queries and BW developers that also write extractors and integrate BW with other modules, Financial reporting is most in demand hance you have lots of FI consultants that have ventured into BW
CRM is more for Sales people and covers a wide range of skills, but is most beneficial if you have both functional and technical knowledge.

Project based work is what makes you a proper consultant and thats what gives you your edge, breaking in requires carefull planning, demand and supply, and luck, but then you can make you own luck.

Which ever route you choose to pursue remember that deleivering enterprise wide application solutions whether its SAP or Oracle, requires for you to be able to understand requirements in the context of the business and that is the true challenge which no training course will teach you.

And for those of you wondering, yes I am an SAP Consultant, with multi modular exprience and have been consulting for over 12 years.

We are constantly trying to develop the Nigerian ecosystem and will continue to do so.

I can be reached at gofestac@yahoo.com

Does anyone know the current state of SAP developers in Nigeria?
What are the prospects of setting up a worldclass SAP company in Nigeria?

Re: Abap/4 SAP In Nigeria

it would be a fantastic idea if there were enough projects to support it, the problem is that the ROI is not clear for SAP because we are not an IT centric society, in some cases it is cheaper to pay someone to take a purchase order by hand from point a to pint b than to automate the process.
The up take of SAP by some companies is more about trend than actual business strategy, hence consulting fees are harder to justify. On the consulting side most new entrants feel SAP is a magic bullet which it is not and with loads of cowboys about it is difficult to make the business case and justify the need on a pure business basis.

gofestac,

Thank you very much for your fast response.

I was reading about E-Delta (Delta State eGovernment built on SAP) and the benefits the state is reaping from it.

Do you have any info or do you know of anyone that can help with more info.

Thanks.

Hello
i read your point about Nigeria not being AN IT CENTRIC country and I think it is a valid point, but dont you think we can change that.I am an SAP Technical consultant and I have been following the SAP implementations going on in Nigeria.I get the impression that most of the implementations are more or  less being undertaken 'to make money' rather than to show case a skill, what i mean by this is that there is a lot of trial and error involved here.
Most projects are not deep enough, the methodology used is certainly not the mysap road map <ASAP>.You can imagine visiting a site and the implementation partner not having a blueprint.I think there is an opportunity for an SAP SUPPORT company in Nigeria,a company that would undertake support roles. And this is what i have been planning to set-up.So the abap developer might be useful in terms of helping customer fix abap problem, write custom code like customer enchancements to the extend the functionality of SAP.

The current company taking care of that role does not have most of the skills required for SAP SUPPORT.

What are your thoughts,

I agree with you totally, I proposed the same to SAP years ago and they weren't too keen, the problem here is that we dont have a show case client, and Felix I agree that there is a lack of proper methodoly in the implementations, everyone wants to cut corners deliver the product cut and run, the problem with that is the good consultants are being brought down as well.
I am interested in what you are proposing email me on gofestac@yahoo.com lets talk further
