In the next year, Bill Gates will manage one of the highest-profile transitions in American business history — he’ll leave his day job as chairman at Microsoft, the $300 billion company he co-founded 32 years ago, and will move full time into philanthropy.
But before he leaves, Gates has a few more high-tech projects to finish. Until this morning, one project — almost five years in the making and code-named 'Milan,’ — was top-secret.
In a TODAY exclusive, I had a chance to talk with Gates at Microsoft’s Redmond, Wash., campus about a revolutionary new device Microsoft now calls “Surface.” (MSNBC.com is a Microsoft-NBC Universal joint venture.) http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/18928656

I think we're sick and tired of corporations trying to "innovate" instead of just listening to their customers. I think Bill Gates should stop trying to initiate a "revolution" in the PC world and focus on what customers want.

@Seun No. What you're actually saying is that Microsoft should stagnate. If they kep churning out OS versions every 4 years, how will they keep on top? if Google has 'listened to their consumers' and remained a search engine company, how would they have emerged as a pretty serious threat to MS?
Hence Microsoft delving into new markets, with new technology. and the truth is, it'll take something really radical to change the way we do things. After all, what's the biggest gripe about vista? people are saying it doesn't do too many things different from Xp. So restricting yourself to an OS business is corporate suicide.
But here's a far better example; In 2001 when Apple announced plans to release a line of mp3 players called the 'ipod', shareholders revolted, business analysts predicted doom and gloom. had they 'listened to consumers' they'D never have sold 100 million ipods and reawakened public perception about the Apple brand.

my only comments are that microsoft's only successful products are rip offs of other's innovations/products of companies they bought over.it will be interesting to see if MS can actually innovate a successful product.

No. What you're actually saying is that Microsoft should stagnate. Listening comes first. Then observation of your customer is next. Products are supposed to respond to demand. That's how Microsoft got to where they are today, and nothing else can take them forward. It's boring, but true. Innovation must be in line with human needs. It's a waste of time to try to make people want something they don't. If they kept churning out OS versions every 4 years, how will they keep on top? That's how they have been keeping on top since the 80s. Giving us what we want: an OS that works pretty well. if Google has 'listened to their consumers' and remained a search engine company, When did Google stop being search engine company? Search is their primary technology. They can never neglect it. how would they have emerged as a pretty serious threat to MS? Google is not a serious threat to MS. Why? They do not make operating systems or office applications. Google and Apple are threats to Microsoft only in the imagination of over-excitable technology reporters! Hence Microsoft delving into new markets, with new technology. For a market to exist, there must be a demand. Microsoft should focus on their customers. They are the 'markets'! In 2001 when Apple announced plans to release a line of mp3 players called the 'ipod', shareholders revolted I don't know how true this is, but one thing is certain. The people experienced the Ipod did not revolt against it! The same is not true of this "surface" (and 'tablet' junk). People are very happy with their desktops and laptops!

i think we still have a sizable number of buyers that like innovation and new products albeit unstable or insecure, microsoft realizes that and will continue to feed their needs. for example it is widely believed that windows2000 is the most secure windows os, yet everyone still goes after the latest stuff like they did for xp and are doing with vista

So many times people don't know what they want! As i stated before, the iPod announcement was greeted with great skepticism. with linux and other open source OSes making inroads into what was traditionally an almost all windows market, M$ needs to work on new and innovative products to keep the cash coming in. it isn't about resting on your laurels and churning out new OS versions every couple of years. It's about expanding your market. Hell, why do you think Shell, Chevron and Mobil are energy companies, not strictly oil companies? it's because they realise that the oil will run out someday and they need to work on new, renewable sources of Energy. That's smart thinking, expanding your horizons! Google is not a serious threat to MS. Why? They do not make operating systems or office applications. Google and Apple are threats to Microsoft only in the imagination of over-excitable technology reporters!
You disappoint me! By now every man and his dog knows that google has a web based office suite out there. it's not yet as advanced as MS Office, but it's pretty decent. Initial impressions show that it's quite suitable for use in small to medium scale businesses, and it's getting better. Please research. For a market to exist, there must be a demand. Microsoft should focus on their customers. They are the 'markets'!
No. By saying 'their customers' you mean people like you, don't you? Corporate customers bring in a large volume of MS profits, and this kind of technology can easily come in useful to select customers. Hell, the surface technology was demoed in use in departmental stores and phone retail centres.
