Crazy Government Bans - Soap Noodles
« on: June 01, 2007, 11:49 AM »

Sometimes I wonder what the people in power are thinking when they come up with their policies!!!

Almost 4 years ago the Fed Govt made the correct decision in banning the importation of soap. It is not too difficult to make and before a huge percebtage of it was coming from Malaysia and Indonesia.

As a result soap manufacturing has become one of the most fashionable businesses to set up. Many people have invested millions of Naira bringing soap finishing lines into the country and probably thousands of people have gained employment.  The products they are making are good quality and often as good as those imported.

Unfortunatley due to the low level of commercial agriculture, the cost of production and transport etc etc the soap base (noodles) that are used to make the soap are very expensive to buy locally and in general because of the lack of good qualiy plants they are poor quality. As a result lots of these new companies have to import from Malaysia.

The government has now banned the importation of soap noodles, 95% of these new companies are now stuffed, they will have no raw material They will not be able to produce, people will lose their jobs, The Big Boys PZ and UNILEVER will dominate,

Can anyone explain why the govt does everything the wrong way round??? OK Nigeria has the resources (Palm Oil to create the noodles) but at least make sure there is a local supply before the ban,

Sometimes i wonder why anyone tries to do anything productive in this country when you can have the rug pulled from under you at any stage
