Women Are Enslaved!
« on: June 01, 2007, 03:31 PM »

It really hurts me to read about women's history in Africa. Men marry as many wives they can, they don't respect them and throw them out at any time they want just because they couldn't conceive or because they have been substituted. We are treated like objects whose only purpose is to give carnal pleasure to men. What hurts me most is that religion has now become a weapon of enslaving women and making them to believe there is no other purpose in their life than that of being married and procreating, even when the union seems to be rather a joke.

It's a man's world they say, but that isn't enough of an excuse to tie my fellows up like this. They are thought they are inferior to men mentally and intellectually. They can only have joy through the success of a man.

A woman wakes up in the morning, thinks of all the great things she would like to do in this life, but has to give them up just because of a societal myth that has been perpetuated from generation to generation.

The world is changing but there are yet some of my fellows who haven't released their mentality from that form of slavery they were inducted to.

Men are now complaining my African sisters are backward, dependent and lack of ambitions. But yet use this our so called backwardness to treat us like trash. They show no sign of respect for us.

As someone has said, African sisters need to stop thinking that scarceness of men should be an excuse of self-lesion. When they treat you bad and don't give you the due respect you should have the courage to move on. Your life didn't start because of man and it ought not to end with any. You came into this world to make great things, because you were given all the qualities required

You are just physically weaker than the other gender. You haven't got any excuse to keep on with this state of subordinate. It's high time you leave all the prejudices behind to take full charge of what you've been denied of all these years.

My fellow sisters, this is what is in my heart. Please give a thought.

I totally agree with you. But be aware that this is not an african issue, it is a worldwide issue. We're moving from a world where we worked with our muscles, and so the physically strong person was dominant, to a world where we work with out minds and our brain, and muscles don't matter so much anymore.

That said, in my opinion, a vast majority of Nigerian women are not exactly taking up the gauntlet, the average babes appears to look for a guy to "take care of her", instead of pursuing her own career and fending for herself. This may however be due to the cultural pressure.

Just don't blame it on africa,

@ Banderas

I can't think of quenching another person's fire without dealing with mine first.

I am addressing all African women here. When they realise what I am saying then the news can be spread around. It's lttle by lttle.

As someone has already pointed out, the subjugation of women is not an African thing, it's just that "as usual" Africa takes its steps towards enlightenment at a snail's pace. I really think if you grew up in a home with enlightened parents especially your mom, such issues like forsaking your individualism only to be subjected to the idea of living with a man would not come to your mind.

P.S.

Women that use religion (I'm talking about Christianity here, not botherd about the rest) as a throwback in enslaving themselves, only proved to have misinterpreted what the word's about.  Wink
