@OP, this thread has the reputation of being worthwhile. You should kickoff with a discussion germane to the thread title, e.g the challenges/benefits etc, of the industry,
Re: Computer & IT Professionals' Hub by hallyman: 4:52pm On Dec 19, 2010
One of the greatest challenges in the IT industry in Nigeria is that the slow pace of the economy in the last 2 years has slowed down the IT sector.
But I feel there could be a remedy. I believe IT experts can come together and form small groups so as to be able to provide specialised outsourced services as contractors via the internet.
IT professionals in India and China are making a lot of money from providing outsourced services from their homes via the internet.
Re: Computer & IT Professionals' Hub by hallyman: 11:25am On Dec 23, 2010
IT professionals are expected to come together and discuss how to improve the industry and create more jobs. This is the essence of this forum.

What are the required skills to have as an Entry Level IT professional apart from certifications
Re: Computer & IT Professionals' Hub by jossylad86(m): 1:35pm On Dec 26, 2010
Well, u require at least an OND (for some banks), HND or a degree. But also important is that you should have basic IT practical skills like Crimping of Network cables, Basic IP Addressing and Windows OS, Passion, Ethusiasm. I believe at Entry level with these skills you'd go far. Cheers
Re: Computer & IT Professionals' Hub by hallyman: 3:31pm On Dec 27, 2010
I think that IT professionals have to go beyond having certifications. We all need to have the passion because that is what will drive you to delivering high qaulity service and then high revenue.

A good way to drive this passion is to always seek global standard in anything we want to do,
For Intance: if you want to design a new solution or a new networking project. The first thing to do will be to go online and find out how that type of solution or project is done in developed countries. This will help you to recommend and deliver best service to your employees or clients.

We all can draw inspiration from the story of Mark, the owner of facebook. He had no job, no home, no money, no certification but he had one
thing--> PASSION.
Today, his passion has made him a Billioniare in USD.
You can see the movie "Social Network".

Re: Computer & IT Professionals' Hub by yamakuza: 2:11pm On Oct 04, 2011
@olayemi: whats wrong with where you are in Ibadan?

You havent been up to a year there na?

CCIE isnt a walk in the park o! 2 friends just burnt over 750k each and they've been preparing for over a year.

Why not finish your CCNP then try crossing into Lagos or Abuja?

CCNP plus 1 year+ experience in Aptech will be a better deal than rushing into CCIE for now.

If i remember correctly, you had two options when you chose that 15k job, and you came back to tell us how you were loving it.

Considering the fact that your office is a walking distance from home with free food, why not just round up your CCNP for now?

You can then revisit the masters in unilag or unilorin and put your ccnp and teaching skills to use by training undergraduates oq N+ and ccna while doing your masters.

With time, you'll make enough money for your ccie or phd abroad.

Use this time to plan and build your social network.

If job comes along the way, no yawa. How u check am?

Still grappling to get MCDST. . . .so I marvel when I see peeps with CCNAs, Ps and IEs.
My job is mostly desktop support and a sprinkling of networking - but its alright for now.
Re: Computer & IT Professionals' Hub by yamakuza: 9:02am On Oct 05, 2011
MCDST should have been retired by March 2011.

You are better off with MCSA as a minimum anyway.

You might want to take 70-680, an elective and the 2 core courses to get your MCSA2k3. The cert wont expire but the exams will retire soon so hurry.

The 680 will count towards future upgrades so its a better starting point than 620, 270 or MCDST.

Ever since MCSE became pure water, people shifted attention away from MSFT Certs for a while.

That was about the time vsat and broadband became popular in 9ja, so CCNA was hot.

People preferred CCNA 35k to MCSE 80k because mcse was pure water then. They would rather spend dat 80k on CCNP.

It was also assumed that any certified person could learn MSFT tools on the job.

i.e. if u can pass CCNA or RHCT/E, configuring exchange should be easy to learn/do, without neccessarily acquiring the certs.

I really hate CCNA as the networking aspect is really annoying. i learnt in uk using train signal and cbtnugget but when you are put in the real world, its really confusing. For instance, things like patch panel and fibre channel are not taught in there. Besides Cisco made it frustrating as u hardly can use their products with other products like netgear. here Netgear switches are common and easier to install. i dont know if they are in Nigeria. i have ccna but when i was taken to the server room at where i currently work,i froze and gave up on routers and focues on micrsoft. if there are book about general router and switch config.that would be nice but at the moment,i hate cisco. you have to go through all those command prompt stuff when you can easily use web interface to configure vlans and stuff. it made me feel like i know nothing
Re: Computer & IT Professionals' Hub by yamakuza: 9:58pm On Nov 17, 2011
Skywalker, sorry about that.

Thats the downside to learning a hands-on course with CBT.

However, with practice and patience, you can overcome that challenge.

There are many routes to a networking career asides Cisco, but if thats what your company uses, you just have to know those commands.

What would you say about Linux then?

Currently my company does not use Linux but i have basic knowledge of Linux. windows is quite easy to be honest,i chose to stick to windows cuz it makes life so easy. there are lot of programs out there that can help you in troubleshooting and that has helped me a lot. i can say i have no good knowledge in routers and switches which is a shame and i would love to learn it but the best place would be someone from Nigeria cuz uk is filled with microsoft products which to be far it is is. with Microsoft server which helps in dns dhcp deploying software e.tc. it make it easier to learn and understand although it got its downside also.
