Didn't know where else to post this but here. Black Students(to be more specific) Still Favor Lighter Skin, Study Finds majority of African American students polled at a Midwestern university say lighter complexions are more attractive than darker ones, according to a study conducted by researchers from two Louisiana schools. The results, taken from a sample of 100 students, indicated that 96 percent of the men preferred a medium to light complexion in women while 70 percent of women found light skin of value in men. http://www.blackcollegewire.org/studentlife/070611_colorism/Can somebody explain why lighter skin is more preferable to darker skin, especially here in America. @proverbial, very interesting topic, i like, and I'm impressed  it dates back from way before our time, to the time of our fore fathers, apparently, the lighter you were, the 'closer you were to the white man' and we all know in the days of colonisation and slave trade, the white man was reverred by our fore fathers. Therefore, those of lighter colour skin were percieved to be 'pure' and more like the white masters. The women, were considered prettier than their darker peers, and often, the lighter skin women got more attention from the masters, and it became a case of the lighter skin men became 'slave / farm supervisors' over their darker skinned peers in the days of slavery. A few centuries later and till dates, u will find some traditions, will demand a higher bride price for a light skin sister over a dark skinned one, hilarious i know! |

that's an elaboration of what I had in mind. Thanks for offering your perspective, I'm 90% sure those things did go on.
It'd be interesting to see if our Nigerian men/women feel the same way, that lighter skin is the way to go, and what rewards they might expect to earn from it.

There4's already evidence of their thoughts, WHY ON EARTH TO YOU THINK THEY BLEACH THEMSELVES AS MUCH AS THEY DO?, because they like it? heck NO, because they think they'll look prettier/better, light skinned
they expect to gain more attention from it, i mean the only country that i have seen surpass nigerians for bleaching is Congo (formerly Zaire)

I have encountered countless who change their skin tone usually by creaming, although I don't understand why they would think it'll make them look prettier/more acceptable. Bleaching, if not done right, can definitely make a man/woman look woeful.
What attention can one earn from being lighter skinned, especially in Nigeria (maybe he/she expects to attract more stares of the opposite sex by doing so, other than this I don't know what else). Since this particular thread is geared more toward relationships; I don't understand why Nigerians (who are obviously not as race-bothered as Blacks) be so sensitive about skin color when choosing a partner, or when looking to appeal to a partner.

All that Luxoire has said is very true. In addition, fair-skinned women are percieved to be quite more pure than the dark-skinned women. Also, being fair-skinned is quite attractive, hence gets more attention from the guys. On the funny side, some cultural background get to associate dark-skinned people with evil. Else what do you think is responsibe for always potraying satan as a dark-skinned being and Jesus as white?  |

I recently started reading about this, I on the other hand tend to find caramel/snicker skin very attractive (I guess it's more of a choice). Light-skin all the same. Else what do you think is responsibe for always potraying satan as a dark-skinned being and Jesus as white? I would have thought that way in my earlier years, but I now attribute the light-skinned portrayal of Christ to the prevalence of light-skin among Jews, I figure it is highly plausible that he was indeed light-skinned. |

My granfather once told me before he died that in the olden days that Black men are full of evils. Their heart is as dark as their skin. they reason differently. all they think about is evil. when u offend them instead of forgiving they start planning on how to harm you. so i quess since the black people are full of bad and evil thoughts and we were told that all the evil and bad things that happens in the bible is always caused by satan (DEVIL HIMSELF) so i think thats why we always picture satan as a black race. |

wowwww, i'm speechless, it could be true, but I don't think so.  Good story, keep them coming. I disagree with your tale in a way though. The concept of black people always planning to cause immediate evil after being provoked didn't register with me. |

This is not right! White people are the evil ones. They are the ones who go to kill and main other nations just for the purpose of stealing the resources there. White people have a long history of evil to other human beings so your grandfather was either completely brainwashed or he was just an uncle Tom. |

People have to be careful what their reading. This is not a real study.
Analysis for the Esmail-Sullivan study took place in 2000. Though it is the most recent on the subject, its results differ dramatically from an earlier study of African American college students conducted in 1997.
Why is it that a mere 3 years earlier, with a larger sampling of students, at Black University's, it was found that the preferences for lighter skin were minor compared to this newest "poll", at a non-black university?
Why is it that the "poll" finding Blacks have large preference for light skin was picked up and is discussed as normal but the far more credible study that found very little preference for light skin was not picked up nor hyped up like this?

Watch the whole thing about the studies with the baby dolls. The kids, already, either have black pride or self hatred. Follow the kids that chose the black dolls and compare them to the success attained by those who chose the black dolls and you will see that people with black pride are healthier human beings as adults, regardless of money. It is the Euro influence. Women straighten their hair, why? To look like a white woman. I am an AA male with dreadlocks, but African women laugh if I suggest they should look into trying it out one day. The crazy part is, they don't see their love for lighter skin and straighter hair as self hatred or as aspiring to be as Euro as possible. I think they are in denial. |

Yes, and black indians were infiltrated by years of European dominance as well. And before England, another form of light skinned (w some Euro blood) had invaded years before and were at the top of society. They have a long history of domination by lighter skinned people so they share the sentiments.

A few year ago i read an article where Continental African were having names like Charles, Alphonso, Cynthia, Rebecca and i was made sad to know that Africans were giving up their identity so as to "fit in" just as how they gave up their brothers 500 years ago. |

I have noticed that in the movie industry all the dark-skinned are very pretty. That is a must for them to be noticed. On the other hand the light-skinned aren't particularly pretty. Their skin tone alone assures them success.

Well I don't buy into the gave up their brothers part. A lot of them were forced into giving up other Africans as slaves with threats to them and their families.
But I do get what you mean about the names. WHy get European names?
It's ironic how Africans accuse AAs like me of being too American and not African enough but they do the exact same things, they are just from Africa, and they have even LESS of an excuse to want a European name, they know their original names, we don't and already have a long tradition of European first names. ANd whenever I bring up the subject, I am told that it isn't a big deal and that it's "just a name". The same way it's "just straight hair". And "just makeup that lightens your skin a little bit". You see a pattern?

Are you trying to suggest that people in the villages have been spared the the systematic brainwashing of an entire race? The villagers interact with people who have been exposed to what is considered the "acceptable" social norms,and thus by that interaction have themselves been brainwashed. |

nnenneigbo, 2 Studies were mentioned in this article. 1 study at a non-black university with only 100 kids involved. The other study at a black university with over 250+ kids involved. Non-Black school: 96 percent of men like light skin. Black School: 16 percent like light skin. Both can not be right. Their numbers are not even close. There are unspoken agenda's in these things. |

nene help me tell them o biko! sure some of them are as a result of brainwashing, but definitely not all, if not albino girls will be the most chased people around. some prefer it because of their own reasons, people like my pastor, he is forever talking about the 'black shining girl' he fell in love with and married. as for me, I like people who are close to my own complexion which is neither extremely dark nor light either. and that has nothing to do with oyibo |

sometimes people take it ridiculous levels making people feel bad for being light skinned
being black doesn't simply mean charcoal black, there are so many variations in us that make the race what it is, whether some like one end of the spectrum more than the other is entirely up to them
