I don't think this is true. The urhobos in my company are extremely proud of it. You would almost wish you were an urhobo

That is not true. Perhaps you came to that conclusion because of the action of one man. There are Igbo and Yoruba parents who'd forbid their children from speaking the language at home. This by no means is an indication that Igbo and Yoruba people are ashamed of their culture. Those misguided and confused imbeciles (prohibition of Igbo/Yoruba Language at home) are as insignificant as a drop of water in the ocean.

@elohor1.

I can't make a head or tail from your last comment. But whether or not it is an insult is something I have to ignore.

Back to topic:

I am not here to doubt what you have or have not seen, neither am I here to make you accept my views. Take it or leave it. . . there are Igbo and Yoruba parents that forbid their children from speaking their native tongue at home. . . from Akure to Umuahia, you will find them in abundance and just like I stated earlier, they are very insignificant.

I made that comment to support my argument that Urhobo people are proud of their heritage and the action of a tiny microscopic number of  misguided and clueless urhobo people shouldn't be used to judge an entire ethnic group. And my point? The number of Urhobo people who are not 'proud' of their culture when compared to those who will represent their people at any given date is like a drop of water into the Atlantic Ocean. . . very insignificant and it cuts across all tribal lines.

my view about this observation is that the Urhobos are not ashamed of their culture but they rarely speak Urhobo to each other but prefer to speak pidgin english just because they are addicted to Pidgin english.
i don't think i can write and read in Urhobo but i can speak it

this is real,my brother said he wished we were from a different tribe,by him different is yoruba or ibo and he wish he can speak it.because he hears it everywhere.
he thinks urhobo language is embarrassing.
but in my house pidgin english is the norm.my dad hardly speaks urhobo.so i don't really understand it very well.i would have loved to.

Interesting. I'm Urhobo, but my parents always spoke English to myaelf and my sisters at home, we only picked up Urhobo, because my grandparents spoke only Urhobo, and very rudimentary pidgin.

We never spoke pidgin at home either, that was again something we picked up at school. I can speak Urhobo fairly well, though I haven't spoken it in almost 18 years of living in the UK. I can understand it perfectly though, and actually read it (I understand perfectly what Elohor wrote). So, speaking to an Urhobo person in Urhobo, and they answer in English does NOT mean they're ashamed of their language! I do the same, unless it's someone who knows me quite well, and can follow my stumbling Urhobo talk!

Incidentally, Elohor happens to be my older sister's name too!

Translates roughly:

"My brothers and sisters, I greet you, what causes you not to speak Urhobo? Because english hard. You behave! Please cheer Urhobo. Urhobo, I greet you, people I greet you"!

A bit rudimentary on my part, Nossy, but it's a bit like that!  Smiley

it is  not on;y the urhobos. This happens to other ethnic group. I beleive it has to do with the excessive exposure to western influnece and the believe that speaking english laguage only make one civilised.  I have so may cousins that do not know a word of igbo lanuguage yet they do not know how an airport looks like. Probably we all going back to Babel.

That is a load of rubbish. i am an Urhobo and i am over pround to be one. You will find that a lot in fact all Urhobos feel this way. Lanaguage doesn't defines anything. The reason why a lot of Urhobos do not speak their lang is to do with their up bringing. A lot of the parents don't teach their children the lang. You will find out that a lot of Urhobo families speak english within the home, our unique pidgin with their mates and the old folks speak the lang with ther age mates.

As for myself my parents didn't speak the lang to us, but me being so proud of where i'm from took it upon myself to learn my lang and in 3 ys i can speak it fluently. Not only Urhobo but also, Ishan, Benin and Isko as the lang is similar.

A lot of Urhobos would like to learn the lang but don't know where to start.

Therefore, we are not ashamed we have the best culture, good looking girls and are food is always on point.

Hey! I think you guys should not jump into conclusion like that because, the Urhobo people are nice people who love their culture.I understand some of them don't  speak their language with their children at home for reasons best known to them.  So I think it will be unfair for someone to just wake-up and make a illogical conclusion. For instance, my husband's dad is from Delta while his mum is Yoruba.  Tell me how will that work out Huh Huh
