My dear, All I want you to know is that. The ISP I am using may be working well in my area and it may not do the same in yours. It is the same as all the GSM services we have around now a days. I can tell everyone that celtel, MTN, Globacom, and every other service pros are wporking well with full reception in surulere but once you get to my area on Kwara Street, Osborne foreshore I they are all toys. Just one reason because their transmitting power is weak in that area. So my advice will be you should may enquiry in your area from anyone using internet; so that you won't end up abandoning it. After you read responses, you should try to move around in your area to ask which is which because buying the cheapest and weakest link is always discouraging. Hopefully you will get an ISP that suits you. Good luck

The internet service in Nigeria is messed up. I use the Starcomms EVDO, which is claimed to be broadband and to be honest, at first I was getting download speeds of about 110KBps, which is very good. As more people subscribed, this has dropped to about 40KBps today. That is the ultimate test of ISPs - time! Personally, I believe the reason for the high subscription charges is the ridiculously high running costs of these companies. I run a business and I feel it too.

donmayor is very correct,
Nitel's Sat3 is too pricey. GLO is doing their underwater cabling too so lets see.
In the house in US we pay about $45 a month for about 750mbytes. That can serve banks here!
But having said that some companies like NetCom and Swift are doing well.

As time goes on things will get better. I know, it's not easy being patient. Especially considering how much you pay and how much you get. Unfortunately, for Nigeria, the basic infrastructure that will allow these companies to provide the service at reasonable rates are not there. So, they have to charge a premium for mediocre service.
I see people comparing what's in Niger to what we get in UK/USA etc. But that's not a fair comparison. These countries have what it takes to be able to provide the service at reasonable rates. probably be compared to other West African countries. Having said that, Nigeria needs to do something quickly. The internet has become part of our daily life (school, work, leisure, etc.), and not having access will just make us fall way behind. Outrageous speeds are the norm on this end. I pay $40 monthly for 4mps up/down. Not expecting anything close to that when I used the cafe in Lagos during my visit last year. Like you folks, I was frustrated too when I had to make a transaction from a PC and it took almost 5 minutes for a page to load. Tried a couple of Cafes and it was the same. So, For most of my browsing I just used GPRS mobile.
Bottom line: With time and with the appropriate infrastructure, things will improve.

The major problem with the internet biz in nigeria is lack of understanding of the industry. Some people jus go into this biz for the sake of 'I hav 2 make money from telecom as well, d next big thang 2 oil', then they run it for 6 months and find out that they are cash strapped! They have paid so much money to these satellite operators and can't make nothing off it because they have a wack model!
As much as we have an infrasctructure problem, adequate knowledge is necessary because it affects the generals operations from service delivery to company adminstration.
Result: They would start running on a 1Mbps backbone and sell it to 100 people, jus to make some money, as a 'player' in the telecom field; TERRIBLE!

I implicate the "Nigerian factor" The Nigerian factor seems to always permeate everything Nigerian. Kind of like the stinky fibre unwiling to go down the loo, It always bounces back to say "boo!". Sorry about the large dose of cynicism, not usual for me and considering that this is a first post for me ( I'm a few minutes old here), I guess I am stocking reasons to leave to where I can really live!

I have said this in a previous post: Nigeria rocks for business! No wonder Indians, Lebanese etc are all trooping to Nigeria.
Guess what amazes me? People complain there is no money in Nigeria. Call some folks back home and they 'll tell you things are hard. These same folks spend 15K monthly for an internet connection that sucks. Can you beat that?
Monthly internet subscription in the UK costs b/w £7 to £15 (unltd download). Do the convertion, £1 = 235 naira.
My take is that Nigerians are been ripped-off! I thought NCC is saddled with regulating this sector. What are they doing.
Why are basic necessities of life seen as luxury in Nigeria?
Same goes for GSM tariff etc.

For a start, I suggest Nairaland champions an online petition or protest against these erring ISP/GSM providers.
This petition/protest note will then be sent to these providers and the Nigerian Telecoms ombudsman: the NCC.
I believe Nairaland Administrator can co-ordinate this.
Lets take some action rather than whinning.
