Slavery In Africa On Oprah Show.
« on: June 28, 2007, 09:37 AM »

Oprah's show, today is showcasing modern day slavery in Ghana. Kids, some of them below the ages of 10 are 'sold' by their parents to these fishermen, in exchange for money. As with most cases, these kids have to toil for long hours in the sea with their masters. I read this heart rending story earlier on in the NY times, and have to pose this questions, "Why arent Africans so concerned about this modern day slavery in our continent, but rather keep over flogging the ancient slave trade that was even abolished by whites like William Wilberforce"?

Here is the link reported by the NY times.

Ndipe,

I am very concerned.

But first you have to remember though with the African American, to be very careful about how this news is introduced. African Americans have no tolerance for slavery. A story such as this could lead to a deep hatred of Africans and a desire for all Continental Africans in Africa to die.

Remember, in America, white racists already like to tell African Americans that they only have to wait a few more years for more Africans to die of AIDS, and then Africa won't be able to put up any resistance as African Americans take it over to save it from things like this. In other words, very soon, we can get the phuck a way from whites, we hate so much. And with all the needed resources of Africa, we won't even need whites to pay reparations, we would be rich from African resources.

So this is the reason, that I am careful with the atrocity's of Africa and in particular, the ones related to slavery and how it introduced to African Americans.

I normally like to point out that with so called "modern day slavery in Africa", we have several factors contributing to this.

1. Whites have destroyed Africa from the last 600 years of rape.
2. African minds have been distorted for the last 600 years, because of the above.
3. Most parents who sell their children, often don't know the real hardships their children face. (Just as Ancient Africans did not know the real hardships faced by the slaves they sold to whites.)
4. Hunger in the bible, drove Jews to eat their own children. We should be so lucky that this hunger only leads to hard work.
5. A lot of countries, like your story shows, such as Ghana and Nigeria are passing laws and begining to wake up to this fact.
6. Children have always had more value in lands where development on a widescale has not happenned.

Praise God, I know Oprah is going to do it with the right attitude, of we need to reach out in love and fight to end this type of thing.

I am basically going to argue that this is the whiteman's fault also.

It is the Blackman's burden. They were taught for 600 years to sale people to survive and their still doing it.

We Blacks have to take the initative to give people a Black Education, so they can unlearn this behavior and turn inwards, towards making all Black lives better.

Ndipe,

Slavery may have been abolished but not the effects of slavery. This is why we are still talking about it.

African Americans are due reparations for slavery and shall recieve them or continue to be like a thorn in the side of the whiteman in America.

Even in the old days, whitemen tried to warn whites away from what they did in America, they could see the future and what it would lead too.

If African Americans weren't still experiencing the effects of slavery, then we would stop worrying about it.

Modern slavery is a global phenomenon that spans different continents especialy africa, latin america and asia. Hope africa wasnt isolated in the report because ive seen reports that give this phenomenon a global dimension.

Initator,

Africa was prominent in the report (because the New York Times is an American thing, they try to relate it back to Americans, in this case African Americans) but other countries were mentioned.

There is also a partial scam going on in America too. Whereby Continental African people step forward to get political Asylum because they claim to have been a 'illegal immigrant' due only to their being enslaved to a family who brought them to America.

I don't know but when you see some of the so called slaves are in fact elderly Africans. It is hard to believe that someone paid all that money to bring them to America for work.

So I kind of of figured it is a way to try to become legal for those without the skills or the education to be accepted on any other grounds other than political asylum.

blame our people and our govt my brother. it's her money she can do what she likes with it. who do you blame more than a young woman who is willing to sell off her kids?

now someone have already paid to buy back the children and see them in school. bless that woman who did after reading the boy's story in the paper.

@ Drusilla Please do not start with "Forgive them for they know not what they do".
Anyone selling his six year old  knows very well all the possibilities awaiting the child

Under no circumstances should a 6 year old kid be allowed to work as a servant. It is child abuse.

I have not watched the Oprah show in question but I think we must be careful not to lump apprenticeship with slavery,Oprah like most Americans suffers from a deep lack of understanding about Africabecause there is more to Africa than being black or going to South Africa and meeting the Madiba so I believe a few questions must be asked before we all fall for another Jeff Koinage, remember him? scam.
Ghana and Ghanians are a very organised people and from what I know of them I really don't think they would stand for something like this,a system of organised slave labour?I have my doubts
