Mere Gold diggers will make that statement; those who don't know how the money was made and I know Nigeria is best know for this. People even expect someone who's abroad to study, a student for that matter

i live in the us and seriously nigerians at home are sometimes greedy. They 'flash' me awake at night. they know theres a time difference. They flash me at work, at home. at church, at everywhere. its annoying and i do not return flashes. I just dont. you can flash a gazillion times. the only time i called back was to tonguelash this dude who was blowing up my phone. I gave him the warning of his life. He never flashed me again. Initially on my visits to naija , i would stuff my luggage full of clothes, shoes, perfumes for everyone. I got everyones wish list. They would even request your luggage set and the clothes off your back. They were just never satisfied. They can never give you anything. Always trying to obtain from you. the ironic part is that they are not starving. these are people earning well and doing just fine! I have stopped all that non sense. I fly into nigeria, see my family and fly back. I dont give anyone anything. I'm sick of it.

Most Nigerians in the UK are stingy because they live from paycheque to paycheque, your salary has already been spent before it reaches your pocket and the tax is just way too high.
And the funniest part and shock to the system is that on initial arrival into the country, one finds it strange that your colleagues invite you out to lunch/dinner then expect you to pay plus a mother and child gets on the bus and the mum only pays for herself. But one graduallt starts to behave like this too.

This is my perspective on this. I believe we in Nigeria are better off than Nigerians in the UK. The reasons are:
The real value of the disposable income of an average person resident in Nigeria is more than those resident in UK. In Nigeria, People can afford to avoid tax through Tax Management or evade tax altogether without consequence; We can afford, without penalty, to evade the payment of Utilities like Electricity and Water; Accomodation is relatively cheaper except you leave in Lagos, where rent is way up the sky.
These are luxuries they don't have in the UK
We are our brothers' keepers. We can afford, without qualms, to bail one another out of financial need.
And after paying for our monthly expenditure which includes money for the upkeep of your parents and sibblings, which we disburse on monthly basis, we can still save up a minimum of 20% of our Net pay.
So do not begrudge our brothers and sisters in the diaspora. I am sure if the Governments of their countries of residence cut them the kind of slacks our Government cuts us in Nigeria, they will be able to do more.
And for you "Flashers" a word or two of esperance to them can be soothing. Call them, not flash them. A minute call to UK is =N=48 on Glo Networks.
A Two minute chat with your loved ones abroad is not too much.
And always bear it in mind that they work harder than you with little or no leisure.
You must be living in lalaland! Without penalty my foot! The penalty is all around you! The police, teachers, doctors, professors, etc. are either shamefully underpaid or paid six months late. Electricity is almost non-existent, the postal service is crude and outdated, zero public transportation, zero students loan for those in need of it, etc. The ideas learnt in evading taxes is extended to political appointments to evade responsibility and rob the national treasury. It is Nigerians like you that make Nigeria look horrible! Shame on you for being proud of such a corrupt practice as tax evasion and later complain about IBB, Abacha, or OBJ! Shame on you!!!

I agree with RichyBlack. Who do Nigerians at home think they are kidding by tax evasion? No wonder they jump at the first opportunity to go "abroad" and live a "better" life. Nigerians in the UK are NOT necessarily stingy. Some just realised they MUST pay the same bills they have learned to avoid back home. It is interesting that most people complain of stinginess when "brother or sister" can no longer satisfy their insatiable desires

This comes down to the perception and value of money. Many Nigerians in Nigeria have never really worked and witnessed how difficult it is to make money. Primary school is free - thank God. Secondary school is a free ride. University is virtually free - 98% of students do not work while in school. NYSC is becoming a joke. Then they get a job with a bank and start making some money - they now see how difficult it is to work and pay your way through life. In the United States, students take jobs as waiters/waitresses; custodians (or janitors); sales girls in the malls, box offices, etc; attendants at stores like Wal-Mart, Circuit City, and Best Buy; taxi drivers; etc, etc. Go suggest to a Nigerian chick to work in Mr. Biggs, she will form serious big babe for you! Pathetic! Many Nigerians do not value money, hence they don't appreciate working for it. Even the private sector that should know better (the public sector is a write off) do not value their customers (the very source of their income) and talk rudely to customers. The customers have been beaten to submission and have no clue of their options, if any! This lack of appreciation of the value of money makes them more likely to spend it than work for it. It makes them unable to comprehend the magnitude and value of a figure like 1,000,000 Naira. When you've not worked to save 100,000 Naira of your own, there is no way you can comprehend the value of one million Naira! so, when politicians embezzle millions, to them it's just "some" money - no outrage, no riots, no huge calls for the removal and prompt prosecution of the thief, even if in a flawed but thriving judiciary. When you "dash" a Nigerian at home 1,500 Naira, the guy would look at you as if you just committed murder - " You see me finish so, you way just land from Yankee na isha one-five you see give me so, haba. Wetin pesin go do with this one. Ordinary transport to come your place pass this one sef!". But when you "donate" 10 dollars (less than 1,500 Naira) to an American or a Nigerian who has lived State side for some time, the expressions of appreciation is well noted. Many Nigerians living in Nigeria, especially those that have not worked for up to six months consistently in the private sector (government work is laughable), have a warped view of money. I was chatting with a Nigerian who was intimating me of a business proposal. Someone with less than 100 Naira in the bank is expecting to go into a business that requires 24 million Naira to start. I laugh taya . It didn't take a month for the person to see the folly of such a venture. These Nigerians are boastful about money, but cannot make 1,000 Naira a day.

True, but to be fair though, why are people in London so inhospitable, compared to those in Germany or the US? Those people too pay tax and have to struggle occasionally but would put up a stranger in their house.

From my little experience, it depends on the person coming to your house. I normally allow my former colleagues to stay with me whenever they are around and i never asked them for a dime.
People back home too needs to change their orientation concerning people in the UK There are lots of things i use to do then that i cannot afford to do again People just have to change and adapt to their new environment. As per UK people been stingy, i believe you can only give what you have

You are right but from what I have seen and observed, you can totally blame Nigerians at home,I think Nigerians in the Uk need to stop creating this psuedo eldorado thing about this place!Imagine the other day I heard that a friend bought a jaguar car here in the Uk and everybody was like hey he don make, that place sweet ooo,but that was back hom ein Nigeria,so you can 100% blame them, you need to know what impression guys here in UK give to give guys back at home. Any one that wants to come to the uk,can come, but just know that you have to work for every penny you get!

Hmmmm na wa ooooo, I dont know why some peeps in naija would be expecting som1 to send the money, for what? Dont u have hands? Dont u have brains to think? When your friend was travelling, did he say he would be sending you meal tickets, ? Meenn go get a life. We are enjoying more than those abroad in terms of money making ooooo. The only think we are lacking is the experience and exposure they have, If you work hard here, make urself relevant to the system and u prove that you are good at what u do with a few connections here and there, u no get wahala,
I'm a programmer here and all the time, i kep getting mails from my friends that I should come over with promises like, "Lukman if u were here, u wud be earning double, ", - - - - for where . . . . . e easy? Its funny to me but aw we go do,
There was even a time a pal of mine neede to give some of his siblings some money here, like 45k sha and told me to help me give 'em and that he wud re-emburse me, i did and never asked him for it, When he offered to payback after almost 2 months, i told him to forget it saying what are friends for, I understand how life is there and I hope some nigerians share the same. Its not that easy, UK is just a glorifies Nigeria to me (lol). When any of them comes back, I even offer to pay the bills when we go out - - - "Una no dey base here, when we come over na una turn to make us feel comfortable", They would laugh and its all fun sha . .
Nigerians, should also buy respect for themselves buy not calling to beg all the time. Lets be considerate when some1 says "I would sort u later",we shud be patient, kpoun yi ko easyy ooo
To those abroad
How una dey, ? We know its not easy but the part that annoys me is when I call, not aking for money and not sounding in a way that i'm begging either, then someone tells me . . . "Ma worry Lukman, things no dey easy but i go c u soon". Do u guys think everyone calling from Naija is calling to beg? When they come hoe gaann kpa kpa, to come greet us go be wahala because of fear of "begging", Ko da ooooo. Make una sef try change una orientation oooo. I'm sure its easier to make calls from Naija to UK and some of us go out of our to do that. HI guys, just to contribute to this thread, calling card cost£4 for nearly 500 mins Cobra card, you can't dare making a call from your mobile or landline, secondly we guys and girls abroad tend to get more request calls than those in Nigeria, thirdly for the guy who said we all dey wash plate here shame on you, what gives you that Idea, I can confortably say we Nigerians here in the UK have done well more than Nigerians in any other part of the world, USA,Germany etc, come over here you will see Nigerians as Doctors,Lawyers,Policemen,Social workers having good homes cars family and kids. One of my mate rings me anytime he likes, like rings my house phone 10Pm at night, wakes up my 1yr old then we can't sleep at night because we are all awake, one even told me I no dey make am feel me like others dey feel their friend when dey abroad lol The bottom of the matter B say, if I call you all D time you no dey call back,I go stop calling, we in the UK or anywhere no dey flash Nigeria,so if your guy here in the Uk decide say your friendship no tight reach and stop calling take hearth, make new friends for there in Nigeria as he has made new friends here and moved on or better still, call POLICE.

, ok dats really funny and quite interesting. i luv that those people who actually replied that provocative email did well with strong and contending arguments that i do support. my observation about this arguments is that those who live in foreign english countries do have different perspectives in life, thier thinking is different and they no longer take the whole nigerian mentality seriously. The guy who posted this is really frustrated, and i am behind those who asked him to let go, find new friends and make a decision about your life from today. galaxy or what ever the name is, you need to realise those people has moved on because thay have seen the difference between being indepent and being the big mouth person who thinks its all about making it through bribery and corruption. I live in Australia with dad and 6 bros, i just came accross this website on google while doing my assignment at uni, and i could not help but be distarcted. My dad don't call his family that much pretty much for these money reasons. the funny thing is when they prank him he doesn't call back because his familky is here, we are what he lives for, how can u expect a man with kids to send u money to start a business when your married? I know its difficult in Nigeria, and the economic situation is useless, but there are other things people can do to be stable. Hey dude am nt talking to you directly but to all those who are biased and degrading with little or no intelligence. well u know what? u have given everyone a food for thought and we are all voiccing our opinions, no offence.

thanks richy black u know what u have defined it fully and had taken your time to speak the truth. those living in nigeria exagerates alot. thank fully they have all depended on frauds of all sorts to get them through life expectancy. I have a friend who just arived in Austarlia (Sydney) to be precised, she is been here for almost 2yrs they live not far away, she call nige like crazy as if something better is there and her dad took note of how much she has sent through western union and got angry. why? because her so called bfriend wants to start a freaking business that has no B plan or backup financaily. i was shocked because she has sent almost 150 thousand naira and thats just the beginign for a 19 yr old who got here and immediately got a job at Mcdonald $11 per hr hahahah, and the guy who is a lazy ass threaten her and abuses her as if she is a call girl who has just reached higher ranks. I spoke to the wierdo over the phone and he can't express him self, so how can he communicate and manage the so called business. he demanded 600 thousand naira ha. of course my friend found out that he has been spending the cash on flashy clothes and going to internet caffe to become the next big thin, if u know wat i mean. they hate working hard but they dream big! What a shame,
