It is very easy for anyone to accuse anybody of anything.  So it is better to ask for proof before taking any accusations seriously.

Who is the person accusing Nairaland of tribalism and what evidence did the person present to back up the claim?

WHY DO YOU'ALL USE THE WORD TRIBE? In my opinion, y'all should get into the habit of saying Ethnicity. Tribe is a word of ethnic or cultural belittling. It's comparable to calling a full grown man a boy, or a full grown woman a girl. In the same way that Europeans used to address fully grown black men and women with, "hey boy" or "hey girl" as a means to degrade them and show their supposed superiority over them at the time,  they fitted the African ethnic groups with the belittling title of Tribe,  as they considered them unworthy to be addressed as they truly were; rich, vibrant, diversified and well cultured ETHNICITIES.

In writings, one would be hard pressed to see the Welsh referred to as a TRIBE, nor the Welch, Scots, Prussians, Anglos, Saxons, Celtics, Bavarians, Russo, Swedes, or other European ethnicities referred to as Tribes.  Angry

I my view i think every other person(s) have got one thing or other to say about the other person but this should be done with a bit of respect to the person or the Ethnicity in question.

As an individual i relate with others based on one or one because i see the person first before ethnic background.

@Hero, thanks for the point of information

For those who are interested here's an additional academic site. http://www.scholars.nus.edu.sg/post/nigeria/ethnicity.html

Here's a noteworthy paragraph. Disregard his spelling of IGBO since it's I-G-B-O to be sure. Wink

We must be very careful to avoid the use of the term "tribe" to describe these
ethnic groups. "Tribe," Ukpo points out, is largely a racist term. The Ibo and
Hausa-Fulani of Nigeria are each made up of five to ten million people, a
figure comparable to the number of, say, Scots, Welsh, Armenians, Serbs or
Croats. Yet we do not refer to the latter groups as "tribes." The term "tribe"
is almost exclusively, and very indifferently, applied to peoples of Native
American or African origin. It is a label which emerged with imperialism in its
application to those who were non-European and lived in a "colonial or
semi-colonial dependency, in Asia, Africa and Latin America" (14). As we are
attempting to discard the prejudices of imperialism it is in our best interests
to discard the use of the term "tribe" when referring to the ethnic groups of
Nigeria.

I for one, do NEVER say "tribe" only ethncity & encourage my friends to do the same.
