To the OP, if you are so proud of the United States please stay there and let us breathe. For all I care you can burn or throw your Nigerian passport away. Also methinks you should go join dollarland or something, nairaland is not meant for peeps like you at all, these is a forum for nigerians and people not ashamed of their motherland. In short your topic is the silliest on nairaland and you must be an illiterate!

Keep the passport so you do not have to fret over getting the "almighty" Nigerian visa to visit Nigeria.  The hassles can be aggravating. Shocked  You might also be in a situation where only the Nigerian passport can save you----terrorist/hostage taking crises---You will be one of the first to be released since we are not "top" priority for terrorist groups. Well, this is kind of odd to be talking about your or our Nigerian Passport. Since you are seeking advise on what to do with it, well, here is mine.
I have had the privilidge or lack of it to travel to so many countries with my Nigerian Pali. You bet my experiences at some airports are nothing to be proud of considering the stigma asociated with Nigeria as a 419 or fraudsters and corrupt country. There is a lot of distrust of Nigerians globally. Our fellow Nigerians to are not helping matters. As you are bound to find a Nigerian anywhere there is any vice. What about the million of scam mail originating from Nigeria and Nigerians in the diaspora. It is very shameful. Hence we were subjected to inhumane treatments by immigration officials at almost every airport.
Nevertheless, I have always carried myself as a proud and uncorrupt Nigerian. I am PROUDLY NIGERIAN. A million US Visa Lotteries, Green cards and US Passport will never change that. Being issued a US passport does not make you equal to a white man. If you want to join the US Army or Marines to fight the white man's war of oppression, neo-colonialism and intimidation please do go ahead.
As for your Nigerian Passport, BURN IT! Let's know you have nothing to do with Nigeria or Nigerians. I hope you find the Uhuru you have been looking for all your time in the US.
At a time when African Americans are looking towards Africa for an identity, you are throwing yours away.
My friends and family are mostly US citizens. Atleast my sister, her husband, children, my cousins. I almost joined the US Navy. I even have friends from my secondary school who are in the US Navy and Marines. I lost 2 friends I knew in Ajegunle who travelled to the US and joined the Marines withing 1 year. They died fighting for the Bush's led corrupt & evil Government.
If you have the US Passport. That is not a reason to want to forget Naija. I am a Hausa guy and I know that no matter where I go Naija to the bone will I remain even though I hold a US Passport. I speak Hausa, eat Hausa food, dress like a typical Hausa man and speak like a Nigerian without the US accent.
I AM PROUD TO BE NIGERIAN. Even if the situation is baad I will still remain patriotic. Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Helon Habila, Hakeem, Samuel Peter, and others hold dual passports and are all PROUDLY NIGERIAN. They can't be anything else.
It is good to be proud of US. Atleast I am. But Naija is the most paramount to me.
I can't be intimidated by the lifestyle, music, lies, media, people, religion, and government of the 70 percent White US population to denounce my Nigerianness.
I advise you maintain dual Citizenship. Mind you right now in the US you can never be a first class citizen. I guess you know that. and you can't even be second class. You are third class. Immigrant.
Like the Yoruba saying goes, "Ajo ole da bi ile". No place like home.
Take a cue from the thousands of Nigerians in possession of the US passport but still remain true to the African spirit.
To other Nigerians reading keep being Black, Keep being Nigerian.
Naija for life.
I am Ahmed from Gombe State.

Burn your Nigerian passport?! Are you insane?  Shocked

I hold a UK as well as US passport, I was born in the UK, but that does NOT mean that I'll denounce Nigeria! That's where my parents were from so why would I deny my Nigerian heritage? I feel ashamed for you!

Getting a Nigerian visa, whilst not difficult or complicated for me, is nevertheless something I'D rather not have to do. At the earliest opportunity, I'll be getting a Nigerian passport, yet here's a jackass thinking of burning / destroying his!  Huh

@capone

thank you so much my dear brother for that intelligent advice.how can he ever think of that? Shocked what kind of us citizen is this?  most of us have got uk passports too,and we are scrambling to get one from Nigeria.

i know what i went through to get Nigerian passports for both of my kids.when you hold a Nigerian p.port you do not need a visa to visit.i don't know about anyone else, but the frustration i went through trying to get a visa for my children from the embassy here in london was horrible.so i got them a nigerian passport.

capone thanks again.i like meeting people like you. You should see me in my''PROUD TO BE NIGERIAN'' tank top. Cool Cool   feeling frisky. Wink

@ Jayon. It seems you don't read well. I am married to a Dutch lady and currently reside in Sweden.
What nonsense are you talking about? I have had the opportunity to leave and I left and I am proud to say it here and anywhere I go in the world.

I AM PROUDLY NIGERIAN!

We should not turn ourselves into beggars in the name of seeking greener pastures. The grass always looks greener on the other side. But when you get to that other side. It's a different story.

Nigerians! keep being real. Be bold, be proud.
Like James Brown said, "I'm Black and Proud!"
So Say it loud, "I'm Nigerian and Proud!"

I say Thank you to

Amsky and Siena

Keep the flag flying

Save it for attending the funerals of all the surviving relatives in Nigeria then bury it somewhere till it expires.  Do not attempt to renew thereafter.   Don't intend to, since it will be of no use to me soon!

Thanks for your co-operation!  We are winning the war in Iraq so no need to fear terrorists anymore! Cool

The same thing you do with your certs and every other piece of document - keep it. I'm sure it is no greater effort to keep it just like any other documents you'll never know when you'll need.
