Gen. Muhammadu Buhari: The Paramount Enemy Of Democracy In Modern Nigeria? by Kaspi: 11:14pm On Apr 14, 2011
"Buhari’s government enjoyed widespread public support for its condemnation of economic mismanagement, of government corruption, and of the rigged 1983 elections. This support waned, however, as the government adopted a rigid program of economic austerity and instituted repressive policies that included a sweeping campaign against indiscipline,” a prohibition against discussing the country’s political future, and the detention of journalists and others critical of the government." -(Microsoft Encarta –Encyclopaedia -  2009)

I feel greatly disgusted whenever the supporters of the highly celebrated ex-coupist and dictator, in person of Rtd. General Muhammadu Buhari attemp to make him look like a kind of messiah, while being oblivious of the fact that He's an integral part of the root cause of our present predicament. The bitter truth is, I earnestly believe, if He had allowed our infant Democracy to continue crawling as at the time He struck in 1983, it possibly would have been flying by now.

All the high desire and agitation for change in Nigeria right now by all and sundry is only as a result of 12 yrs of democratic experience. If the Gen. had allowed the checks and balances enmeshed in all ideal democratic practices to continue wobbling since 1979 (when Alh. Shehu Shagari took over), I believe, I'd be justified to say only God would have been able to determine the peak we would have attained by now - 32 yrs later. Ghana’s  reform took them  less than 25 yrs in all. The positive impact of which cannot be more glaring.

And, here He is, instead of swallowing his pride and sincerely apologizing  to Nigerians for the treasonable act that only succeeded in plunging the nation into a 16-yr extremely devastating political, economic, social and mental abyss, He has the moral authority to question existing flaws in the polity and even seek for the peoples’ mandate.

If  Gen. Buhari is really as righteous as He’s being portrayed, I’ll implore His supporters to as a matter of national interest ponder over the following burning concerns before fruitlessly wasting away their votes on Saturday, 16th April, 2011:

    * When Jerry Rawlings of Ghana first took over power from General Frederick W. Akuffo in 1979, He immediately set up various political transformation
structures in Ghana in less than one year after assuming office. Why couldn’t Gen. Buhari do that when He took over from Alh. Shehu Shagari - even after
being in office for about 2 yrs before IBB paid Him a courtesy call?
    * Why did his administration outrightly prohibit citizens against discussing the country’s political future throughout His reign?
    * Why did His administration unduly detained journalists and others critical of his government?
    * When Sani Abacha became despotic, why didn’t Gen. Buhari resign his appointment with the PTF as a man of honour?
    * Why did He at a point attempt to shield Abacha of leveled corrupt allegations?
    * If He claims that He took over because He felt the 1983 election was rigged, then why didn’t He immediately reorganize the conduct of another one?
    * Why hasn’t He still apologized to Nigerians for that coup?
    * Why is He so desperate in desiring to rule again? (I hope He isn’t on a vengeance mission)
    * Why didn’t He as a mark of respect for Nigerians appear at the Oputa panel when He was summoned in the year 2000?
    * Why are most of His supporters so barbarically and stupendously violent?

I believe, one of the main reasons why most of His supporters want Him back is because, they’re confident that He has the capability to recover some of the nation’s looted money from corrupt citizens. But, the issue to be determined here by all right thinking Nigerians is, is that all there is to effective leadership and good governance? I mean, if by any divine providence He wins the general election, (which I greatly doubt can ever happen in the present day Nigeria that we live in), can his rigid disposition survive the wrath of the National Assembly? I mean, does He has the essential diplomatic aptitude to handle all the three tiers of government?

Opinion plssss!!!
