Twice he was elected "World Coach of the Year". Also, besides the legendary Ernst Happel, he is the only manager to win the European Cup/UEFA Champions League with two different clubs. From Wikipedia.

Matthias Sammer-Former European Footballer of the year, Lotthar Matthaus-Former world footballer of the year, Jurgen Kohler amongst other legend played under the general.

Hitzfeld is a coach known to have taken the scalp of clubs like Man Utd, Real Madrid several times. Fergie has a dismal record against Real Madrid, AC Milan and bayern Munich the greats in Europe.
