you need to give more history about the cough:
1. Any fever? 2. Anybody you're in contact with same cough? 3. When do you have the cough- what causes it? worse inside or outside the house? Dry or rainy season? 4. Lost or gained weight? 5.Night sweats? 6. Chest pain? 7. Do you produce phlegm or not, if so what color?, smell, or consistency? 8. Taking any other medications? 9. Any other illness, or allergy? 10.What makes better or worse? 11. What type of job do you do, and for how long? 12. Smoke, drink, or use drugs?

Niagerking1, i am really grateful, thanks very much for your response,
no fever at all, it is contagious, i don't just know the course of the cough just started just like that with some congestion bw the lower part of my throat and my chest, as though i don't breath very well, with chest and back pains , no loss of weight at all, no night sweat at all, i produce phlegm consistency for 3 years now, it is some how green/yellowish in color atimes and atimes colourless, have taken antibiotics tablets and injections, each time i take cold water it worsen it, i don't smoke, drink, or take drugs, and no other sickness or allergy.
Anxiously waiting for your reply.

@Treasure J
One variation on the theme of smoking I forgot to ask is: are you exposed to 2nd hand smoke, at home or at your job. Did you say what was your job?
I bring these up because you have a chronic condition of the respiratory system. The list includes- asthma, bronchitis, seasonal or persistent allergy. There is something in your environment making you cough, and the tough task would be to identify and eliminate it.
Begin the elimination process by removing simple things from your environment for a while, then check for relief. Begin with perfumes, soaps, cigarette/tobacco smoke, industrial or occupation irritants, pets(cats/dogs), dust, grass, etc.
Also, coughing up greenish/yellowish sputum points to bacterial involvement, so I would recommend a properly taken sputum culture and sensitivity lab test.
Don't just take any antibiotic, because it might you make it worse on the long run. Another option is to consult a pulmonalogist.

Robbitosin comes in a bottle in the liquid form. They come in varieties like PM, AM and lists the different stuff they cure. You don't need your doctor's prescription for it but can get it over the counter. I use it when I get allergies in the spring. If u use PM use them at night before u go to bed cause they make u drowsy.

treasure, what kind of hospitals have you been going to and what kind of Drs have you been seeing? what did they say about the cough? cough is a symptom and not a disease. there must be an underlying disease causing the cough. and for the cough to be there for three years . . . . .doesn't sound good.
i'll advise that you get a pulmonologist as someone advised or some other specialist somewhere (cardiologist, oncologist) and find out what is really wrong. but no need to panick as i'm sure your problem will be handled effectively by any of these professionals. i'll suggest you start with a tertiary health centre like a teaching hospital.

Are you sure you don't have cystic fibrosis?
Leave Nairaland immediately and go look for a good hospital and seek help. You might be needing a lung transplant.

CF is very low on the differential diagnosis She is apperently a well developed adult, without any other significant medical problem. CF would have been diagnosed earlier, don't you think? I think the poster has had quite a few useful advice so far, I don't see any need to send her into panic.
