Learn From Kalu, Turaki’s Ordeals, Pdp Warns Govs

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday sent a strong warning to serving governors to learn from the ordeals of former governors who are now on trial for alleged money laundering offences.
The party specifically warned its governors not to tamper with the funds allocated to local government administration in the country, as any one found culpable “would be dealt with”.
There has always been a general accusation that the largest percentage of council allocations is looted by governors, some of whom have been indicted on that count by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The PDP also expressed its support for the current anti-corruption crusade of the EFCC. The commission has so far charged four ex-governors to court over allegations of money laundering and mismanagement of public funds. They are Alhaji Saminu Turaki (Jigawa), Chief Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia), Chief Joshua Dariye (Plateau) and Rev. Jollly Nyame (Taraba).
The position of the party was made known yesterday by the National Chairman of the party, Senator Ahmadu Ali, in his opening remarks at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP held in Abuja.
According to Ali, “the party will sanction any PDP governor who diverts or interferes with local government statutory funds. I repeat, there will be no hiding place for those who divert or misapply local government funds.”
He warned the governors to create a conducive environment for local government to live up to their responsibilities.
He said the “tragedy of the last eight years where local government never impacted on the lives of the people can no longer be tolerated.”
On corruption, he said: “The PDP is fully behind the Yar’Adua administration as it takes the anti-corruption war to the next level. The anti-graft war has come to stay and can only be intensified if Nigeria hopes to develop.”
