Asbestosis! That is nasty!
In all cases, when exposed to asbestos, you wont get the symptoms for a number of years. When you ener your mid 20's then, it kicks in. You will cough, lose weight and actually start looking like an AIDS and a cancer patient. It is incurible as well.

so very interesting you should raise this topic.
2-3 years ago I was buying ceiling materials and my brother in naija mentioned "very good asbestos ceiling" materials compared to a wooden ceiling material.
Then, I aslo found out that the contractor was planning to use some asbestos pipe for my plumbing.
So, you can imagine what my order was: no asbestos conatining material 100meters to my house.
Of course my folks think I'm crazy to spend so much extra, when I could have used the readily available asbestos.
That asbestos is still made and openly sold in naija despite overwhelming evidence that it cause all sorts of illness like mesothelioma is criminal on the part of the authorities.

Unfortunately my brother the answer is yes.
Asbestos has not only been banned in most developed countries, whole cities like NY, Atlanta, etc embarked on wholesome removal of anything with asbestos in the 70-80s.
By the way treatment for mesothelioma is not very rewarding, but there is some ancedotal reports of surgical therapy.

Bye the way, another public service information is that smoking in presence of asbestos increases the risk of getting mesothilioma 15-20% higher than asbestos alone.

Actually,if it is the same dangerous asbestos,why can't it be banned?In england,premises can be closed down for just finding a palm size piece of it.There are just so many things killing people in nigeria that people readily attributes to witchcraft and juju,poor old women.The fact is that autopsies are still alian to nigeria medical world so you don't have statistics on the causes of death,one can easily be poison there without anybody knowing.

Asbestos just like other chemical elements and compunds are the same all over the world. Iron, copper, brone, etc are the same whether your are in UK, US, UAE, USSR, whereever, and so is asbestos.
I remember an asbestos industry at Enugu when were growing up, I bet it's still producing and killing people by the thousands. I hope it's been closed, doubt it .
