Am I Mad?
« on: July 20, 2007, 09:00 PM »

the only job that gives my joy is teaching (strange ehn?), i am happy when ever i teach and i am good at it too (no be say i dey make mouth, at least if i wan wake mouth no be on teaching Grin) but i know i am good at it because of my students testimonies and confession.
i saw my self through high institution teaching extra morals and my students then still appreciate me till now (majority of whom are now in the high institution), among the females some of them are married now (those that married early) and i was at almost all their wedding because they insisted, not as if there was anything attached (other than that i am was their teacher.
During my NYSC i thought in a school , queen Elizabeth school ilorin, i thought Physics, when i was about to leave they (my students, teachers and the principal)all refused, they wanted me to stay (even though that it was 1. All girls School, 2. Muslim majority and i am xtian). the principal even made sure i got my appointment as a teacher in the state education board  so that i could be paid by both the school and the state, but i left all these and came back home.

Now i have a job ( the pay isn't bad, and i am precating my profession too) but the truth is that i am not happy, all i want to do is teach, just to watch the  expression on the faces of those folks turn confission to joy when i teach, it gives me joy when they understand what i teach, nothing is more enjoyable than teaching. but my problem now is, how do i leave my telecommunication job and make a living in teaching (get married, build a house, train my kids to my taste, buy a ride [i love BMW])all from teaching in this country. guy, i am confused. i am  trading my happiness with wealth, but then what do we do without money Huh Huh

Of course you're not. Well, it depends on what's of utmost priority to you- the money or happiness. For me i'll say, stick around your Telecoms job and if time affords you the opportunity of having weekend classes, go ahead. Probably when you've made 'enough' money, you could quit the job and start teaching on a full scale.

@poster,

I am not sure it is all about the money. It is about doing what makes you happy.

If you are going to derive fulfillment in teaching then go for it. There is no Career that doesn't
have a trace of greatness in it. I just finished a book on career and was surprised to read about a lady
that left a corporate job to join a Dancing Group. That is where she found her fulfillment and today she
is not only making it, she is an Author, a sought after speaker in America.

There is a message I got in the book and will like to share it with those who care to follow their hear:

TAKE THE DIVE AND THE NET WILL APPEAR!

All the best my friend as you seek a life of fulfillment Wink

piece of advice:

go back to school, get a masters degree and if possible a PHD.

you can teach part time while you are doing all that.

then you can teach at the highest level.

If you are sure about the way you feel, then thats where you can find fulfillment.

wishing you the best.

No, You are not mad. I was offered a bank job before i got my present job. I always wanted to be a social worker, even though the pay is nothing, I am happy and satisfied especially when i see women who our projects have touched positively.
The truth is that if you are doing what you are called to do, God always makes a way to provide for you. I am not paid much but somehow, i get everything i need. God will see you through but it is your decision

@Poster,

No you are not mad.  Maybe you have just discovered your purpose in life!  Your happiness and greatness in life lie in the area of your passion/calling.  There are many routes that can take you there:

1.  Sharp man's idea above is one option- pursue teaching to the highest level and turn out the best lecturer you can ever be.

2.  Use what you have to get what you want.  Work in Telecoms for now and use it as a stepping stone to where you want to be.  Save up, invest and plan for opening a school in no distant future.  Plan big and start small at your level.  You may start as aweekend school, extra-mural school, etc and watch your dream grow!

3.  Who says you can't be a great educator even in your Telecoms line?  Leverage your expertise with your passion!  Explore that angle too- specialised training in telecoms- repair, maintenace, installation, networking, etc.  Think in the mould of NIIT!  It's achievable.

4.  Navigate yourself to the training department of your company and be an instructor.

By all means don't give up.

Godspeed!

Hey guys, GREAT response all  Kiss

Most people run after money and neglect their purpose in life at the
tail end of their lives, they discover that they have not lived at all.
It is NEVER about the money you know, it is about getting fulfilled in life
that is my own idea of living.

To make it more interesting, while doing what you see as your purpose, you
still end up making MORE money that thinks money is the be all of life. The
double portion is that you get more fulfilled than them.  Cool

I have always adviced people to live and not just exist but unfortunately most
people are just existing and not living at all. Fear of the future has crippled them
from taking the right decision. One thing I learnt early in life is that at the point of
making a decision, there is always a change of destiny.

@poster, follow your heart and LIVE.

I wish I could just lay my hands on My precious book, Chicken Soup. I will post some
interesting stories later.  Kiss

You're far from being mad,you have attained what I call "Self realization".If I were in your shoes, I'll work in the telecom industry for a while knowing I have a long term goal which to me is not just being a teacher but employing teachers. You've got to own a school my dear.Make some savings and then opt out of telecoms and go into education full time. With the kind of zeal you have,You'll biuld a very wondertul school with a standard. You can be a proprietor come teacher.tthat will even make the teachers you employ know that they're in for serious business-if oga dey enter class,na wa o. :obest of luck
