First experience with cooking was beans-After boiling for a long time,i added palm oil.I noticed that what i was cooking didn,t turn red immediately and since all the beans i had seen cooked with oil were bright red i thought the palm oil wasn,t enough.So decided to add more palm oil and continued pouring from the keg until the beans started giving sizzling sounds.It was getting fried.

omoge, hmm u know say if i was a man, i for don snatch u up since.  girl, u just have it going on o. lucky say u sabi cook. i go eventually buy all those things sha. when one is a student and moves around a lot, person no get time to dey buy all those things. but ima definitely follow my mama's advice and stock up on them pretty soon. she will be proud!  so make una let me rest o  @debojyde.  yeeeeparipa! u want to kill yourself with palm oil calories?

a healthy way to cook nowadays is to use tomato to redden the food and a few spoons of olive oil. nobody should go the pearly gates before their time.

My first time cooking turned out to be my last for over 4 years. I recently started cooking again. Well this was in boarding school(command secondary school ibadan), i had sneaked some rice and decided to cook it with electric stove i also sneaked into school. While boiling it, i decided to go fetch water since there was finally water coming out of the freaking tap, by the time i got back there where seniors and people pouring water on the locker(thank God i used someone else's locker, i would have burned my provisions lol). Cut long story short, the electric cooker cooked the rice, burnt it and the locker i put the electric cooker on top. Anyho when asked if i knew who did that, i am sad to say i denied knowing who cooked there to avoid punishment.

To cook Jollof Rice in the oven is easy and even better. The rice will almost always come out crisp.
Use your regular big pot (Preferably - Agbari Ojukwu)
When the rice is half way done and you've added all the condiments, Preheat your oven to 350 - 375 let it boil a little longer until you can just peep the top of the rice like its about done soaking up the water (For best result use low heat to cook the rice) Take it off and put it in the oven For extra garnish, put in a couple of bay leaves.
Check it at regular intervals, say every 20 mins until its done.
I think that should help you get started. If you messed up the first time, try again. adjusting as necessary (which is the true Nigeria way)

Hmmmmm,
How can i ever forget the first time I cooked, I must have been about 7 or 8. I took it upon myself to fry egg for myself and younger ones as we were running late for school , needless to say I burnt it all up (thx God not the house as well!) ended up with no breakfast to school, and almost got caned for it. Was not priviledged to go in d kitchen again till I was about 13 years of age.
Now I can't wait to get out of the Kitchen.

oh i see, sorry i got you wrong before @ Babyosisi  oven for Jrice?  well when i no longer have stove i will try the oven style. for now, it's stove for Jollof rice. i make Jollof rice once in a while (special events or when i have 2 hours for it). am good with rice and stew, and the usual boil rice, put oil, pepper and onion, salt and tomatoes. Soul muah muah sister  . I'm lucky i don't move because i like my place and got classmates as roomies  .

Hey God! yu guys are worse than me, i actually thot my case was pathetic, has anyone burnt kpomo before? pot turned pretty black and i had to scoop and find good ones, washed them and cooked them in a fresh pot. of course i finished one canister of air freshner, soaked and hid the pot before my mom came home and yes she's not a nairaland member

burning pomo once used to be a regular past time.
Jollof rice is best when its slightly burnt, my brother accidentally "discovered" that the day he forgot the jollof rice on the fire.

I had too many One time was when our housemaid ran off before we got back from school and there was nobody at home, so we didn't have any choice but to cook by ourselves, so my cousins and I made decided to perpare some eba OMG it was so hard and its was looking undone, too much hard nut inside hmmmmm I think we were between 6&7 Am so bad with salt because I over use it when cooking. Lol still now my mum doesn't allow me to cook for her  , scared I might have too much salt inside the food. I couldn't even boil simple water damn its dried up and the kettle turned black.

lol it wasn't really my first but i remember vividly what happened. i was really eager to please my mum and to at least show i could cook, that i told her not to bother but allow me cook jollof rice. i had put the whole ingrdients in left for the salt, i felt the salt can and it was empty, so i poured what i thought was salt into it not knowing it was sugar. having tasted the food and not feeling the salt in it i kept adding, not being very satisfied i left it with the thought that whoever needed more salt would just add. and a most unfortunate thing then was my dad was adviced by a doctor not to take sugar at all. men was it bad, that's an understatement. so u can imagine what happened for yourself

Ah, i tried to make ogbono soup.Very ambitious for a first timer.I stirred the ogbono in palm oil like i had seen my mum do. After that i added a few bowls of cold water in. What i did not realise was that you had to add hot water or the hot stock to ensure it got it's slimy nature. So this is me stirring the soup for over 30 min and it was just one big pot of brown water.
Nobody had to tell me i had goofed.I Just quietly poured the soup away and started all over again, thank God for buying ingredients in bulk and i nailed it this time .Of course i never told anyone i poured away a pot of soup, wink wink!

i can't even count the number of times i've had to throw away a pot of burnt food or food that didn't come out well. gosh, i always felt so stupid and prayed forgiveness from God for wasting food. and of course, nobody had to know about it. heh heh!

mine wasnt too disastrous i only added too much salt to the rice.since then i learnt never to use spoon in measuring the salt i put in food.my hand measures better.solids took me tru hell while i learnt to make them.god,several i made were full of lumps.thanks to my patient folks.they ate my mess each time i made them but bet u am now a pro

the experience the first day i cooked kind of funny.any way it was actually beans,and you know sometimes mothers add garri to soupe as tickner,my mum dose it,so i did in the beans when i have added so much water to it and it refuses get tick.every body at home where confuse most expecially when the whole beans was covered with garri.at the end it was thrown away.

I nearly killed everybody. People that ate the food were just running to-and fro to the rest room for like 2 hours, fighting to take turns in the rest room. It was hilarious but crazy for them, i was thus banned from the kitchen
