@ 50kobo , just how's that possible? corruption in nigeria is deeply rooted, far beyond your wildest Thoughts. , imagine parents paying for their kids jamb and gce runs! I have a lot to say but i'm so ashamed of the way things have turned out in this country with such great potential that i fingers just can't move, so many food points have already been raised, lets get to work with them rather than keep talking???, don't you think?

nigerians themselves speaks negative about their country - what else do you wnt outsiders to do? Imagine if foreigners come to Nairaland and reads all the topics on Nairaland that focuses on Nigeria and development, by the time they finish reading the threads, just imagine what their thoughts will be, they will be amazed to see how Nigerians diss their own countries, so bingo - I will say we deserve what we get as a people.

yeah i agree with angelheart. charity begins at home. if you want positive image for nigeria, start by being positive about nigeria. a lot of people i meet respect Nigeria because as far as i'm concerned, many of us (i hope) don't go about talking about corruption and 419. i mention the good things about my country. for the bad side, they can go watch CNN for that. too much negativity on nairaland. on every topic about improvment, there are always people who say stuff like "why are they using the money to build roads, they should use it to build schools instead." or "we don't want Nigeria to host the games, we should eliminate corruption instead" we have EFCC that's helping the country and there are still people who don't want it. enemies of progress. lol how can we make improvment when we are soooooo PESSIMISTIC about everything. and i used to think that i was pessimistic about nigeria, nairaland changed my mind. i'm not saying it's not good to criticize. but we should only do this among ourselves rather than going to display our dirty linens in public. just how's that possible? corruption in nigeria is deeply rooted, far beyond your wildest thoughts. it's possible. many countries in this world are corrupt. Just that they have systems that are efficient enough to check the corruption. i think that if more people are politically active in Nigeria and/or if we have an efficient system, the leaders will not have the peace of mind to do whatever they want in office. it's supposed to be a democracy, right? this is an extreme scenario but the govt of China recently beheaded one of the officials who collected bribes to let unsafe food go through to the public. this tactic will def. scare other officials from trying such corrupt practice. ask yourself, if you are hired at a bill gates estate to be the cleaner and there are nobody around to check up on you, 9/10 times workers will steal his property. it's just human nature. many of us here shouting "corruption, corruption" if you become governor and you see how easy it is to get away with stealing, you would too. so, it's not just a nigerian problem. just that we have it worse 'cause we don't do anything about the problem. Hello Guys, Corruption, bribe taking, stealing etc are all cost by one thing or the other, a person who is frustrated and needs something to do can easily take to any thing as far it will fetch him or her moni [i will not blame that kind of person], a bishop in warri once said that if he heard or see any mobile police man kill an armed robber in delta state, he will sue the police to court, why because when work are not provided notin to look up to, whats the nest thing to do in other not to die by the cold hands of poverty, thats by the way, imagine somebody who trained himself throught primary to university, graduated with good results n end up riding Okada, do u think that kind of person will b happy, if it happends that someone ask him to use the Okada to carry him out for robery he will not hesitate, so we should look at these from all angels.
For example, the fastest swimmer in this whole world, if they should put him in the biggest river in the world, he will swim, swim, swim and die, because it s not a swimming pool but a river, he can swim one quata of it, Govt realy needs to put tins in order, hlpe the masses to grow, i don't blieve there is any body that does not know what to do, but because some tins r not in place, we sometimes find it dificult to fulfil our dreams, THE GOVT NEEDS TO HLPE THIS NATION TO GROW, we need their help seriously in all ways, i pray GOd touch there mind and help ease things
These stealing, kidnapping etc do happen in other countries, its just that, them say na the mess wey poor man mess, na I'm dey smell pass, so na so we c am, MAKE THEM TLK them go tire, them go join us one day celebrate the growth of this nation
WORD!!

People still say corruption is deeply rooted in Nigeria. A single company scammed the state of California of a record $30 billion and nobody said corruption was deeply rooted there.
The problem is not that Nigeria is corrupt among other countries. The problem is that Nigerians believe if they try hard enough, they could convince the world to respect them by virtue of their claims of corruption.
There are millions of Nigerians who rather than wonder how Nigeria became the second most corrupt country in the world, they wish Nigeria was the first.
Una know wetin corruption be?

abi denex, and where do you think these people learn the tricks of the trade from anyway? Capitalism is a western invention and its exploits are western as well.
And anyway, our image is completely our own doing. If you do not like the way your country is looted we would do something about it. Obviously people do not really care that much or are happy with the status quo. The USA was a former colony, most people always forget that. The fought for their freedom and independence to govern themselves. South Africans fought and shed blood to be free of Apartheid. If Nigerians believed in a better Nigeria they would stand up and fight.
If I was a politician in Naija hoarding billions, you think I would take heed to people writing articles about how much I stole or what other nations thought of my country? I would simply spin it one way or the other. If I knew the people of my state/country I was stealing the money from could end my life tommorrow or overthrow me I would think twice.
Politicians in the USA do not steal money not because they are honest (no politician is) it is because there are consequences.

Hi fellas, We have to agree that are there innumerable problems in Nigeria. I don’t know why we think it’s Ok for Nigerians to treat fellow Nigerians shabbily and inhumanely? It was not Ok for white colonialists to rule us with iron fist, but it’s acceptable for our leaders do as they please. Do Nigerians really deserve less? The reason why western media keeps portraying Nigeria in bad light is because there is no good progress on economy, human and infrastructural developments to OFFSET our bad image. We take 2 steps forward and 8 steps backward. We have no balancing act to counter western stereotypes.
South Africa for instance has an emerging economy. Their economy is growing to point that they have the largest economy in Africa because they have created wealth for middle class, while in Nigeria, more and more people are getting poorer and infrastructures are deteriorating. I have some questions for all you blind patriotic Nigerians. Can you enroll your kids in the same elementary you attended? Can you enroll your kids in the same High school you went to? Would you allow your baby to be delivered in that same hospital in your town/village/ city where you were born? Don’t even talk about our universities. If we do not talk about these man-made problems our rulers will think that we are OK with the status quo. This is a sign of a country that has sunk into abyss of desolation.
We must jettison this idea that all is well with us. All is not well with Nigeria. WE MUST CHANGE THE STATUS QUO

I couldn't agree with you more. Nigeria and Nigerians need to create more positive things in terms of development, be it environmental, technological or industrial. High quality products need to be associated with Nigeria and they have to be seen by the outside world. The Japanese and Koreans suffered some insults regarding some poor standards in their products when they were growing. We know where they are today. Toyota is now the number one auto maker, something quite unimaginable in the 60's, 70's and 80’s.
Elites and other citizens in the UK still see it as a prestigious thing to send their children to such schools as Harrow and Eton. How many children of the wealthy politicians even attend the federal government colleges these days? How many of their children attend our universities in naija? This is because they the politicians know the standards of those schools and the environment/infrastructure are poor (and they made them deteriorate through their greedy and wicked policies).
No one will respect us until we make our home (Nigeria) neat, safe and conducive to live in.

that man is an epitome of corruption. If they say they want to scrutinize executive issues, he will say he's not part of the executive because he performs legislative duties. If they say it is time for him to testify on incriminating, he will say he's not really part of the legislative, because he performs executive issues.
Check the amount of money Halliburton has made of government contracts in the last 5 years. He's even the first vice president to shoot a law abiding citizen while in office.

@denex this post is very much related to this topic: I doubt its stopped Tourism just because of one book or whatever it was that you saw,
A few years ago, I remember trying to bring some family members to naija when when we arrived at Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport. After all the hassles (ATL is the biggest airport in the World), when we finally reached our concourse, there was not only an overhead loudspeaker warning, but the neon warning on the board read: Travellers are warned about travelling to the follwing dangerous World airport: Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, Nigeria. You can imagine how much effort it took to convience other members of my travelling party to board an airplane that would finally land them in Lagos. Foreigners without emotional attachment to naija could have easily cancelled the trip. For all the negative (I didn't say false) information about naija, the then government, with a counsellar office in Atlanta never saw the need to address the issue.

I am glad you were able to convince them. Others here on a 20 man religious conference cancelled their travel plans even after going the previous year successfully!!!! What can he do??? When the problem starts with Nigeria??? These reports are based on what foreigners encounter in Nigeria when they visit. If we clean up the home base then the work is 2/3rds of the way completed. As it is now--Nigeria is referred to as a "rogue" nation by others because of our socio-econo-political climate. Mr Consular cannot do much here.

Our reputation. That one is something that will take devine intervention o! There is nothing any counsular can do.
If a whiteman wants to do business in the Niger Delta areas today, do you want the counsular to say there isnt any chance of him being kidnapped?? Or that there isnt a possibility of an aircraft running into a herd of cows on the runway of an international airport?? or what??
Our country bad, and that is a fact. All we can do now is insist that those elected into power, take the appropriate actions to rectify the situation in the country.

Please, we the people on this website/forum are Nigerians (mostly) and other people non-Nigerians that can actually read and understand what we are writing. (surprise). I totally agree with those who say we need to confirm that she said this, however, I cannot reconcile those who sound like they are "happy"?? or feel "validated" by this piece of news. It's so easy to blame others rather than look to change ourselves. It's because stories like http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2007350816,00.html are becoming quite regular and that's why Nigeria has a bad image. I wish the press would acknowledge that there are many decent, hardworking Nigerians who also find such acts deplorable. All countries have their fair share of corruption. The only difference between corruption in Nigeria and other countries is that in other countries, it's more subtle. On a positive note, Ireland has its first black mayor, a Nigerian. I wish him all the best! http://utvinternet.com/newsroom/indepth.asp?id=83318&pt=n

@ Mizzeya, "I doubt its stopped Tourism just because of one book or whatever it was that you saw"
I have no idea if it did, but what I'm saying is that corruption should not be the first thing on the page, it does not represent the Nigerian people. Yes, some people may be corrupt but definitely not everyone and please tell me, how many tourists do you see in Nigeria? Most foreigners in Nigeria are either working there permanently, on official duty or business deal. Others have negative thoughts about us.
Nigeria is not the only corrupt nation in the world, It is lack of respect by the publishers to our Nation to write that the only thing we are known for is Corruption. It is not in their place to write such a thing. It is detrimental to our Nation. They even went as far as writing that with just 20 Naira, you can bribe any police man. Now as much as that is true, this happens in other european countries. I have seen it and I know it.
I have written to the publishers. I lambasted them, )))
