My advice for you is to start with C# and ASP.Net, this will allow you to start developing web applications straightaway.

My opinion, i think you need to understand the architect of a computer. What i mean is this, you need to understand the structure of a computer, learn how hardwares interact with software and vice. I assure you, if don't learn this, there is no way you will be come a good programmer.

The best programming language to start with is C, all modern languages are based on C.  All you need is notepad and a compiler, Or use linux where a C compiler is installed by default. A good textbox I will recommend is "Teach yourself C in 21 days".  Of course, you cannot learn it all in 21 days but its a good start, good luck on what will turn out to be a long and rewarding journey.

are u trying to kill him or something grin, there are better structured languages out there , and am sure he does not want to start with firmware programming, just incase i am wrong you can settle for ASM if you are into firmware grin,

TO be more serious with you , i would advise C#, properly structured, ease to understand, and you dont have to know OOP to develop resonable softwares,
Python is another good one, thats if you want to settle for a scripting language

any one you decide to go for i can provide interractive tutors at no cost

PHP
JAVA
C#
VB.NET
ASM
C
C++

For learning computer programming you must learn at first C language, because C language is structure programming language and base of other language.

I'd tell you to start with C but I'm 'fraid Fayimora'll send my forum access to Binary Hell.
It's hard, I know, but almost all other languages are based on it.
But failing that (please, who wouldn't), do the cowardly thing and start with Java. Not that there's anything wrong with it, far from it. I practically breathe Java nowadays.
'nother option is to, nah, that can't be done by a noob. Wanna bet? Here goes: machine language. Pure 1's and 0's.

javalord, I decided to pick on your response for my question instead of starting a new thread. I have been given postgraduate admission by two different colleges. However, one is about hardware (networking, computer architecture, installing os) plus web design while the other is strictly, web design, oracle, java, database courses. I have not really been exposed to either hardware or software. Which would put food on the table fast as my investment in education needs to at least start yielding back quickly after graduation. thank you

No matter whatever you learn but just excel in that. Learn any language but learn it properly.
I have started with C, then C++ and then I learned Java and after that .NET..
Some of the basic concepts are common for all but syntax varies in all of them. But still I suggest you to start up with .NET as amongst all the programming languages that I have done, I liked .Net very much as it is easy to use and I enjoyed working on .Net framework.

My own opinion is for you to start with C Language, itz a great programming language to work with, it will put you in a better shape to move on to other languages. You can google Codeblocks, great IDE for C.
