Hi Nairalanders,
I am IT Analyst/Floor support working in an Investment bank in the City of London. I am planning in moving back to Nigeria in a couple of years time.
I am now looking into specialing in a different area of IT which will involve management. I am currently considering a certification in ITIL or Prince 2.
Can anyone in the IT field in NIgeria advise on job prospects of being an ITIL or Prince 2 certified professional?

So surprised at your question, An IT specialist should not be asking this question,
ITIL , Information Technology Library is about Management of IT services , Incident management, Error Control (Error Identification & recording, solution investigation, Defining Solution) Configuration management , Change Management, and post implementations review ), it is a framework that defines a standard practise for providing IT services support and delivery.
while PRINCE 2 is a Project management methodology . it is a standard method for managing a project from project initiation, scope mgt, time mgt, quality, procurement, commuincation, risk mgt to the closing of the project, It has standard procedures, specific forms , to accomplish the project activities.
So basically ITIL and PRINCE 2 are not on the same Technology platform but are needed for IT project management.
For Nigeria., emphasis are layed on the two certifications in parrallel, if you intend to work with Telecomms, ITIL seems to be mostly needed certification and a knowlwdege of project management principle/methodology,
If you need more advise, insights or materials on each of them, just drop your E-MAIL ADDRESS HERE

Thanks Africaface, I actually know the difference but not sure how much ITIL has been adopted in Nigeria. I will appreciate any material you could send regarding ITIL. I think I can easily move into ITIL role rather than project management as I am currently working in the IT Service delivery. Opson@hotmail.co.ukThanks for your time.

I am ITIL certified. I could offer some 'free' training on this when next in Nigeria. But it is better if you already working in IT service delivery and service support or you an IT Manager. Free = You will need your company to provide the training room, print training material etc.

For what its worth:
My observations as far as ITIL is concerned in Nigeria, is simply, Nigeria is not ready for IT Service Management definitely not at this level of best practice. My opinion is that the maturity of most companies in Nigeria in this area is pretty low, as most organisations are more interested in the technical provisioning of IT infrastructure than the management of same. They are more likely to be reactive than proactive in the "little" management they might have hence "fire fight" most of the time with related IT incidents. It is not unusual to hear a server being down in organisations for days, and the first and only approach is to get the techies in and thats it!!
My advise would be for those hoping to practice ITIL in Nigeria, there is need for more marketing of the subject indeed creation of awareness of ITIL and its benefits is key to securing buy-in's from various organisations, but trust me, it would be a great challenge as most Nigerians (Organisations) do not subscribe to "intangible" services, talkless readily pay for them!
Indeed i was flown in from NL to conduct the Service Support course in Nigeria in 2007, and even the course provider has not paid the NL counterpart to date, same course that was carried out in the US, Sweden, Muscat, Brussels etc where ITIL is well recognised and used, indeed with no payment issues!
Goodluck to potential Nigeria ITILERS!

ITIL is definitely a good skill to have. It is just the framework nigeria needs to bring it up to level with the rest of the world. We have long had the culture of build and let rust. No maintenance culture. With ITIL you have a rigid framework in place that actually works. Its systems thinking. ITIL is all about processes. And if you adapt your organisations business needs to IT -it doesnt matter which country you are in, you will have better results across your organisation.
If you can switch the current 'firefighting' thinking to a 'fire prevention' thinking, you can kill the monster while it's young. Go to nigeria with you itil and transform business. Companies like Onando will like qualified experienced IT professionals.
