I Have No Maths Skills - What Can I Do?
« on: February 18, 2006, 04:56 AM »

I lack mathematical skills beyond basic arithmetic. please, do not be misled that I am total idiot because I graduated at the top of my class and I'm starting my PhD in Human Resources Mgt. pretty soon. I'm just scared that one day my kids (if I do have them eventually) will need my help with maths homework and I will have to lie about why I can't help them. I will like to know if there are other people like me out there and what I can  do to remedy this shameful situation? Huh

What are you talking about, chrisd?  Which Phd do you have?

Anyway, there is no shame in not being a Maths guru.  Nothing wrong also in being honest with your children, because some of them might have the same challenge and instead of being nasty to such ones it would be better if you could be an understanding father.

@dauda
it'll be easy for you to understand basic maths now than when u were younger. believe me. just pick up an elementary maths book you'll see.

@chrisd
have i got some questions for u . . . will let u know when i'm stuck.

Thanks Seun and cOdec for your kind words. My lack of maths skills is because I was young and stupid and skipped all maths classes to go hang out with my other maths hating cohorts. I will try studying elementary maths as cOdec suggested.

@ chrisd, no comment.

Dauda, to be entirely honest, I'm the same way. I excelled in all my other classes but failed woefully in Math. I think what happened was that I determined at a really early age that I didn't like it, and sort of closed my mind to it after that. It stinks, Regarding your situation, well, I must agree with c0dec. Maybe you should try over again? I guess one of the good things about living in the states is that Americans tend to 'dumb' everything down for their kids. Maybe the books will be easier than expected. I'll try it as well. I'll pick up an elementary math book, and try to work my way up. Good luck with it. Oh something else; when I was in college, I discovered online tutorials. Those are actually quite helpful.

@ Chrisd: Dude, that was rude. Really.

Do your addition and subtraction in your fingers. That's all the practical aspect of maths you need to know. In this age of computers and calculators, you have nothing to worry about. You're not going to encounter any Pythagorean theorem anytime soon.

Seems that our friend here needs a bit more than addition and subtraction using his fingers

So wait, let's see. Being that ayoolanr has never heard of such a thing as a Phd in Human Resources Management, it means it doesn't exist. Also let's look further. Ayoolanr feels that 'somehow' he/she/it (whatever you are. It doesn't say) is OWED some sort of explanation about this? ALSO ayoolanr goes a little further by randomly insulting this person and calling him names.

Dude, really. Calm down, take a deep breath and allow a little bit of common sense to penetrate your nuggin. Stick to the subject matter. Don't belittle yourself and the little intelligence you have by acting like such an idiot. His topic was 'I HAVE NO MATH SKILLS, WHAT CAN I DO?', if you have nothing relevant to say to that, hold your peace. Don't come on here and insult people you don't know. You 'must' have been raised better than that.

@ ayoolanr

 You are definitely retarded. Don't come swinging if you got nothing reasonable to say. Don't be calling people names like that.  Didn't your mum tell you that?. Since you are so ignorant and stupid to figure it out yourself. I will be magnanimous to break it down to you. It is Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Organization and Management - Human Resource Management Specialization. Do you get it fool?

I personally have avery big problem with maths, maybe its because of the type of teachers i have had. I had an F9 in maths and thats whats making me take exams again.

Its nobodys fault actually
