In a male-dominated society, this is unfortunately the way things go, all your pontificating over here will not change things. As TOH has severally mentioned, if the guys on nairaland are any representative of the general Nigerian male population, then this crass stupidity on the side of men has reached epidemic proportions, leaving the large population of women with a choice of either lying to snag the idiotic morons, or becoming second wives to the saner section who don't care about virginity, or seeking men from other climes who are not subject to such a distorted mental state.
your much vaunted 'don't do it because society compels you' argument is good in theory, but is very difficult in practice. until you've experienced being a 32 year old single lady with enormous family pressure all around you to get married and your entire existence is meaningless without that addition, you cannot truly understand the magnitude of the pressure that some of these women face. I do not envy them at all, rather i try to understand and commiserate
