How Do I "really Own" My Domain Name?
« on: August 23, 2007, 10:45 AM »

You hear it all the time: "Sign on and get a FREE domain registration!" Sometime later, maybe you start experiencing erratic services and you want to transfer your account elsewhere, you get the shocking revelation that YOUR domain name, does not belong to you afterall! Why? You host had made themselves the registrant of YOUR domain name, thus effectively owning the rights to the name.

Folks Help!
How can I get a guarantee that by "FREE Domain registration", it means that I will own the exclusive rights to the Domain(s) (i.e that I will be specified as the registrant and owner of the domain names) registered for me, and that I can transfer my domain to another host anytime I am not satisfied with the services of my host?

Better still, please tell me how I can independently register and maintain exclusive ownership of my domain name.

Thanks.

Your domain name(s) belongs to you when you are given the login details of your domain(s) control panel. Please don't assume this to be your hosting control panel, they are different.

Why would you wait until I want to transfer before you provide me with the domain transfer key?
Why can't you give me the key when I register?

@skyskay
what's the difference between my domain control panel and my hosting control panel? In simple layman terms please!

what's the difference between my domain control panel and my hosting control panel? In simple layman terms please!
We use two different reliable registrars ( a company that registers the domain with ICAAN). One gives us the domain transfer key right away, the other requires us to manually trigger the request from the system. If you do ask specifically after registration that you want your transfer key upon registration, we would give it to you. I did not say we don't provide it, what I said was we would provide it upon request, when the case applies.

One thing you need to know about the transfer key is it only applies when you are trying to transfer the domain without interruption by domain locks and your inability to receive the email to authorize the transfer. But as the case might be with us, your email would be configured as the authoritative administrator of that domain by default, hence such problem wont arise.

The domain transfer key allows you not to worry about having to go through any approval process before the domain transfers.

This is in accordance to ICANN's new transfer policy, which allows automatic approval when no objection is sent via email, hence the transfer will be deemed as approval by default.

The domain name:
When you register a domain name, you get the right to use that name.  Here i mean just the name, like kazey.com for example, is just the name.

The domain panel allows you to have control over that name, and make modifications to that name. For example, you can choose the change your contact address to that name or even configure where you want that domain name to point to.  All this is done within the domain panel.

The Hosting:
Hosting is how you can use that name(the domain name) as an address for your website or email. Remember that Your domain name is what people will type in when they want to visit your website or send you an email.

The web hosting account , is the account on our server that stores or host's your website or email.

An example would be a house being the hosting package and the address that leads to the house being the domain name. The house that occupies people is the web hosting account. The web hosting account stores your website, your emails and other things.

The hosting panel is the control area that allows you to have control over the web space. It allows you to create an email address for example. It allows you to modify your password, and do a lot of things.

I do hope you understand, It can't get easier than this Smiley
