If I were rich, I would not pack my money abroad because of all the excessive (40%+) tax i'd have to pay! Tax is on income and not wealth.If you simply withdraw money from Nigeria and bank it in the West,you won't pay such tax.If you were working,on the other hand,any money you earn(income) will be taxed. The idea of taking your money abroad is that it is safer and inflation is much lower here(single digit inflation).Human beings are essentially self-interested.People,firstly, do what they think is good for themselves not what they think is good for the country.That its not in Nigeria's interest to bank abroad won't stop people from doing so if they think its in their best interest. The real challenge is to create a stable economic environment where people can feel confident to invest their assets. |
