mine happened 1st week of january, 2002. imagine the coincidence, u know in january everybody de pray make God make the year good. na so temptation come appear o. i just thank God that greed did not take over my reasoning. the temptation was great. dollars and pound coming to u on a platter og gold after like one week of praying and fasting and u know what one of my request during the prayer session included money.
GOD WILL DELIVER US FROM EVIL MEN. MY ADVICE TO NAIRALANDERS IS DON'T BE TEMPTED TO REAP WHERE U DID NOT SOW

Even as a Nigerian, some of this stories are earth shattering. Londoner, the one wey happen to you friend for London, I read a similar story in one of the tabloids back home, I think it was either prime people or vintage people. A girl went to their house, and deposited her mother's belongings to these 419 people. I think she was bewitched or so, and upon recovery, came to her senses. She wrote that her mother was relieved that her life was spared.
For me, I have never fallen prey to the wiles of these 419 people I have heard of their stories, to the extent of watching them advertise their sordid activities on Television, but I am so fortunate that I have not been tricked by any of them. When I am in Nigeria, I dress casually, avoid fanfare, and publicity that might attract them to me. And, this is coming from a guy who is very sociable. The thought of being duped, however does not register on my mind when I am in Nigeria though. My brother fell victim to one of them. He had arrived from the USA and on his trip to Calabar to visit relatives, his money vanished. He had no money left, that when he waved a cyclist to pick him up, he was hoping that the man would not demand for money upfront before alighting. When the cyclist dropped him at my uncle's house, fortunately for him, my cousin was home, and my brother alighted from the machine, explained his misfortune to my cousin, and she paid for the fare. It would have been so embarassing for him, if there was nobody home.

my experience, last week wednesday,I boarded a cab going to Maitama and on getting to my destination, the front door where I was sitting refused to open.since it was raining heavily I could not ask the driver to come over and open the door for me.so we began striuggling to open the door and I immediately became unaware of my surroundings. by the time he finally opened the door and i alighted, I realised I had been robbed of my valuables including my Nokia N72 phone.

so far ,so good,it not my doing,it the LORDS!
am always careful how i move around in lagos,i don't stop to talk to anybody no matter what,i position myself in such a way that there is always a escape route and there's no way am going to be cornered.
i don't join conversations in cabs, make sure i get to areas am not familiar with before dark and so many other things which i think peeps should take note of.
am not claiming mr.knowall but theres no way am going to be interested in money i didnt work for.i no go even put mouth.
to those that have been waylaid one way or the other, please be more consious and please tell peeps about ur experience so they don't fall victim.
though this aint about 419,but robbery, just feel to inform u guys
another thing now is don't buy anything in hold-ups unless u want to lose ur belongings, don't attract attention to ur phone in hold-ups also.be wary of beggars, they might just come up with AK-47's beside ur car.
the other day someone was talking about a Gala seller coming up with a gun from under his carton of Gala.to be forewarned,

I strongly believe that people are duped by this so called "419" guys due to greed. Here in lagos the case is the same and i really can't narrate my own experience. The general public need to be fully aware of the gimicks used by this people as ignorance is not an excuse.

something similar happened ot me in abuja, i had just come back from the states, i and my cousin went for driving lessons and missed our taxi, so we decided to walk the 1 hour 30min trip home, back to zone 4. then this fool approached me from the front and was like can i talk to u. I told him to get the mess out of my way before i spray him with pepper spray, i don't really think he believed i had it. then another idiot approached me from the back and was like, aha now, fine girl just relax, he wan talk to u small. oh boy i started screaming to get the hell out of my face. So they looked at each other and hurriedly walked away. After going to clubs in the US, I'm pretty good at making a scene when i don't want to be bothered. THen i didnt think anything of the incidence, but when i was telling the story to my aunty, my cousin said that righ tbefore the men approached me she saw both of them talking ot each other. I was a little spooked and reminded myself ot go back to the firing range once i got back to atlanta, to sharpen my target skills.

ok. ive had 2 experiences
1st was when i was on nysc way back in 2001 in ph. had left the school where i was teaching and a crowd of people at d busstop so i was grateful when a battered brown kabukabu stopped right in front of me. i entered here was a lady and 2 men already inside.after sometime the driver stopped at a point and told one of the men that this was his stop that he was tired of takin him round lookin for d place he wanted to stop. that the addy did not exist. the man looked anguished he cld barely speak english and was blabbering in french that he had just alighted from a ship at onne port and had brought tvs and other electronics to supply a bizman in ph and that was the addy that he was given. he had to find the guy as d ship will sail later in the evening. they got me involved by showing me the paper with the addy written to verify if i knew where it was to "help" the man. this was after everyone else had looked. next came delibrations on how we could help the man, buy the goodsor help him sell them etc and our reward will be a tv each and some money. next minute the cab that was taking me from rumubiakani to rumuola was turning in the other direction on aba road heading towards onne port to see the goods. i started feeling dizzy at that point. all of a sudden its as if the holy spirit touched me and i heard a loud voice in my head saying get out of this taxi fast don't you realise what is happening! i suddenly found strenght and started shouting drop me oh! drop me oh! I'm going to rumuola. the driver said sister i think say all of us don already gree say we dey go port try help this man. i still shouted and they stopped, pushed me out and drove off at top speed. i was shakin and mnew it was Gods grace and mercy upon my life. please pray without ceasing.

2nd one was in london during my masters in 2005.
i wanted to move off campus and was searching for accomodation on this popular website gumtree. the guy had a nice apartment in hampstead heath (a nice area) for a reasonable price. he had pics of the place. i emailed him that i was interested. next min he replies with this sob story that he is german currently living in munich. he was married to a brit thats how he owned the house which they lived in. about a year ago they where both involved in a car accident. she died and he was left crippled and had been in a german hospital, is now in wheel chair and is tryin to raise money to get his life back on track and has decided to rent the home. (all this to elicit sympathy)
he asked what i do and will like to see a photo of me. i told him i was a black nig student in the uk. he said he didnt have a caretaker for the house and would have to fly in from germany (beware when plenty story starts, it gets whiny and long). that i had to prove it would not be a wasted journey by showing i had enough money in my acc to pay my rent. i asked how i could prove it. he said i sld tranfer the total rent money to anyone i pleased maybe a friend in school (this confused me because it was not to him) and send the bank teller evidencing the transfer to him via western union so he can know i really have that amt of money before he travels down with the key. that word western union got to me as i associate it subconciously with naija. i played dumb askin what western union etc. i decided at this point to consult a fellow naija bros in school. they guy confirmed ho ha that sure smells like nineteen. next time the guy emailed me a reminder bout the teller, i reported him for abuse to the webmaster and his post was takin off. my question to this day was how will he have made use of the bank teller? answers please
my cousins own was bad. the 2 men followed her home. waited patiently as she packed all her prized possessions and gave them. booked an appointment for her to come to and addy later in the week to give them more.she was on her way that fateful day to give them again when her sister who happened to be visiting started asking questions. she was actually fighting her sister to be allowed to go. her eyes only cleared after a pastor was called to pray for her. my people be prayerful. greater is he that is in us than he that is in the world.

i had a similar experience, it was so terrible on that fateful day i was coming frm sango otta, the golf car parked n call oshodi. i entered the car n on our way they picked up another guy that was carrying a travelling bag on his leg.The driver now ask him to put d bag at the back of d booth, that he wants to carry 4 people at the back n they started arguing which i interverned. that was how they roped me in. the man that owns the bag said he has worked for one alhaji n d man died after being with him for 9 years. the alhaji promise to set him up after 10yrs but he died that was how he picked up his money cause the wife ask them to leave. i was taken to a place were we made an oath not to tell any body about it. after all we were ask to for money to remove one juju that d alhaji placed on it. if i tell u i don't know anytin frm that moment all i was lookin for was money. after my eyes was opened to all that happened i almost ran insane. i thank God for everytin i suffered in the hand of this people cause God said that is the end of my sorrow. they have actually taken my sorrow away. please brenthen don't listen to stories when u ve heard their story u will fall for it cauise they will be begging u to help d guy n d guy will be crying profusely. i had to pass this lesson across so that non of us will be a victim. this dollar or pounds issue is becoming rampant. i later believe it is greed try n be contented with what ever u have. i also agreed that this people used charm, so don't listen at all. once u heard its about hard currency, just step out of the vehicle. thanks this is the story of my life.

Londoner,
I know there are 419ers everywhere but the story that happened in London where someone else was joining you in a cab is not true because once u call a cab its for u alone (except you are with friends or family) unless u r on the bus or tube/train.
Please give us true story so we can learn from.
This happens to my friend;
He always receive mail that Nigerian govt's money. In all of the cases there is no one to claim very large some of money (always in million or multi million pounds or dollars)but they need a foreigner who will sign for the money. They also want him to send his bank acct and all his personal details.
Some people have fell in to ebay scam as well.
I feel ashamed the other day when I was on ebay and the seller claiming that he did not want buyers from Nigeria as he had been duped be4. Therefore He did not want to send any good to our country Nigeria.
But I know 2 gether we can turn this around for better.

I think this is more of a learning experience for those that have not gone through it before, most people here didnt fall victim but where almost duped. so please posters that are writing that people are foolish, greedy, naive should re-read the post and thank God for the peoples lives.
Again, for that cab thing going on in Abj., my advice is to simply not share a cab, or make sure you're with someone else that u know personally. When i was in lagos, i never entered a cab with anyone, i always refused it. its better to pay an expensive fare than to be duped in the end.
Again for possible victims of hypnosis, as many have already said, PRAY BEFORE YOU LEAVE YOUR HOUSE.
My sat lesson was a working distance from my house in Ikoyi. one faithful day, i was on my way to class, when a guy standing on the road asked me for directions to a hospital, and for the people that leave on Awolowo Rd. Ikoyi, you know the many junctions, streets, exits, e.t.c it has. I told him, "you know what, i am not sure, but if you just turn into this street you might find it." He still insisted that he will need a guide, but i was like "i really don't know the place so my guess is as good as yours." only for me to see my aunts friend signaling to me to go on, i didnt understand what she meant then, but i just knew she didnt want me talking to the guy. after the lesson, i just stopped at her shop to ask why she didnt want me to help the guy. Obviously we know the gist, he was looking for a victim.

Seems u have an itchy brain to be insultive. Check very well on the first page of this thread to verify who it was that was duped by a sex con-lady. Try not to be rash with your words in life (thats if u are wise enough to heed). It will save u from trouble As for those who feel the people with these encounters are "foolish", don't think u are too smart to fall victim. There are some cases where its just by Gods grace that the people escape. Just keep ur eyes peeled and pray

Ok, Here is my experience(my one and only experience), well thats what i get for trying to be a good Nigerian. Here is the deal:
It was back the when I was attending a lesson preparing for my UME examination, It was such a bright morning and I never thought some of them SCAMMER would go mess it up for me. I was some very reasonable far distance from my lesson when this Fu**ker approached me and gave me one of them lines, said he was a foreigner and was looking for an address; asked me if I knew it (I said NO). Then he move up ahead and saw some other guy and asked he, that is where the problem started. the guy he asked was so greedy. please people really to cut he long story short, I wanted to help him out to get to some bank and get his foreign currency change but then when i got to his hole (where he stays) the guy I met there came up with that popular line of PAPER TURNING IN TO MONEY. Then I knew what I was into, when the bastard went to get the washing liquid, me I had to put my running skills to test (if you know what i mean). when I was out of there a guy approached me and told me he stays around there and he knows those bastards(this fella saw me go into them hole) he told me to call some kind of NAVY cause this bastards can buy their way out of a police net.
Well I never called the NAVY or MILITARY on their ass but I think by now they could tell that MAMA DIDN'T RAISE AN IDIOT

@ @labiyemmy: Probably there are such scams in the UK, but I haven't experienced any.
As for staying away from Nigeria, that's my choice, it's a free country. I don't have the time to keep looking over my shoulder, trying to determine if the well-dressed stranger asking for directions is genuine, or if the taxi cab I'm in is part of an elaborate hoax.
Everyone makes their own choices where they want to live.
I made mine.
