don't get confused. All they are talking about is the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)technology. It is also called IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband. This essentially is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or through any other IP-based network. It is gradually replacing the conventional switching-based telephony that we currently use.
The conversation they lockers had is talking about the general hardware requirement for the implementation of VoIP. With hardware VoIP solutions it is possible to connect the VoIP router into the existing central phone box in the house and have VoIP at every phone already connected. Or Software based VoIP services that require the use of a computer, so they are limited to single point of calling, though telephone sets are now available, allowing them to be used without a PC.
A lot of people feel you must replace your existing hardware to get the full functionality of VoIP, but we have software solutions around that handle the communications just as well, at a relatively cheaper cost and smaller physical size of the required machine.(a PC as against PABX switches usually in an array)
