State Police: To Be Or No To Be
« on: September 04, 2007, 07:30 PM »

There is a need to revisit the issue of State Police due to the recent occurences in the country.

The supporters of this idea are basing it on the fact that:
1.  A policeman of the state origin will be well equiped with information while carrying out his duties.
2.  They are also of the opinion that issues of police brutality will be checkmated, since they will not want to unncessarily subject their kinsmen to untoward hardship.
3.  The State Governors will be empowered as Police Commissioners will be answerable to them.

However the antagonist are of the view that the force may become a willing tool at the hand of the State Governor who may deploy them to fight his political opponents, amongst others.

However with the resurgence of criminal acts and insecurities in the land, which one do you support : The Nigeria Police Force or the State Police?

Sincerely speaking, this is a phemomena that i find dfficult to take sides on, in as much as the idea to form a state independent police command will go a long way  to solve most of the problems that we are facing, it will also go a long way to worsen some,

ADVANTAGES

a) an indepent state police will promote awareness of indigenes to join the police thereby creating job opportunities among citizens.
b) it is easier for an indigeneous police manned by indegenes to fight crime, owing to to the fact that he owns the land best knows the land
c) intimidation will be reduced
d) competition amongst various state commands will be promoted(every state will by this want to make its state m ost convenient for investors thereby the state governments can start up a longterm reform agenda, amongst many

this-ADVANTAGES

a) just like spora likely said, it could be used as a political tool by government to manifest its selfish agenda.
b) most cases would be treated sentimentally, owing to the ''who do you know'' Nigerian factor.
c) a police man could as well go crazy with power and would want to use it against his opponents.
d) the policeman might find it hard going against the member of  family

MY advice is that if there has to be a state police, then there has to be a total sanitization of the police at the Federal level now and it has to be trusted and tested and proved before any decision of such could be embarked on,

best thing that will happen to nigeria but it must be well integrated with each states so that:

1. criminal don't run from one state and hide in another.

2. Police law must be uniform across each state.
