80% Of Nollywood Films Are Wack
« on: September 11, 2007, 06:38 PM »

every one is discovering actors and artists through reality shows and compititions but we are leaving the fact that we need to discover exceptional movie writers that will make our nollywood movies watchable. 80% of nollywood films are wack. i am a good writer but none of my brother is a marketer and that bars u in nollywood.

WHEN YOU WATCH MOVIES LIKE THE DEPARTED,OR SERIES LIKE PRISON BREAK,24,LOST YOU WONDER IF WE DO NOT HAVE WRITERS THAT CAN WRITE A SCRIPT WITH SUSPENSE,ACTION,INTRIGUES AND ALL, NIGERIA FILMS ARE TOO LAME,I HOPE THE WRITERS OUT THERE CAN COME OUT AND SHOW THEM SELVES.THE MARKET IN NIGERIA IS WAY TOO BIG,BUT THE GUYS IN CHARGE NOW  TO SEE THIS.THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS IS BY MAKING A FILM EVERYONE CAN APPRECIATE.IMAGINE WE ARE UP TO 150-160 MILLION IMAGINE SELLING YOUR MOVIE TO 30-40% OF THE POPULATION THATS ABOUT 48MILLION PPL. IMAGINE THE PROFIT YOU CAN MAKE.APART FROM THAT BY NOW WE SHOULD BE AIMING TO GET A NOMINATION IN THE OSCARS.THE SO CALLED DIRECTORS WE HAVE NOW ARE YOU CRAPPY,THEY  THINK ITS JUST BY CARRYING A CAMERA ABOUT THAT MAKES THEM A DIRECTOR,EVERYTHING MUST BE IN TUNE TO MAKE A GREAT MOVIE, FROM THE WAY YOU CAPTURE EVERY SHOOT OF THE MOVIE,TO THE BACKGROUD SOUND, AND SO ON.HAVING SAID ALL THIS I THINK PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT FEEL THEY HAVE GREAT STORIES  SHOULD START WRITING,AND IF YOU CAN`T WRITE THEN PATNER WITH A WRITER AND SHOW SOMEONE, JUST DO SOMETHING.START A FORUM, OR WHATEVER, I KNOW ITS HARD TO GET SOMEONE TO RECOGNISE YOU BUT NOTHING GOOD IN LIFE COMES WITHOUT HARDWORK AND PATIENCE AND MORE IMPORTANTLY NEVER GIVE UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP! WE WILL GET THERE VERY SOON!

I think it's wrong to compare Nigerian movies to American movies, there are plenty of differences between these two countries like culture, literacy levels etc, all Nigerian film makers need to do is make movies that have a reasonable standard. Like those boom mics appearing in shots, reflections of the camera men and many othersthat's what makes Nollywood wack.

The industry needs a lot of investment to grow. Investment in modern movie studios, investment in film academies, investment in distribution outlets and other multiplier sectors. However you must give it to the present practitioners who have staked their money to take this industry to the third in the world. Just watching Africa Magic you get surprised at the level Nigeian movies have gone in Nigeria. All over africa (or in some parts) Nigerian movies are eagerly watched even as they are crap in terms of depth of writing and lousy production input.

To outdo the present marketers takes a lot of money to create multimedia outlets. There are also not cinemas to create a box office scenerio here. A ll these has led to the stagnancy of the movie sector. So the long and short, TALENT FOLLOWS CAPITAL. Put in more money in this industry and the yield would be bountiful.

well it sure is taking a bloody long time. Angry
why don't nigerian directors start by improving the camera quality, it looks like a porn movie camera is used. the acting is poor, the script never seems to change. there really is a long way to go.
hope we get there before im 40 Tongue Tongue

My take here is am just so happy about the ban it really gave up coming artists a chance.I was really getting sick of the same old people.Yesterday on africa magic i saw previews on Uche jumbo and Nonso Diobi's film festival and i was HAPPY.good very good people PEOPLE LIKE THIS before now where condemed to supporting or wakapass roles.

Reality shows are also doing good but to hear the gory details of how these winners still struggle to get roles. The politics! men it is gangster!being rated 3rd in the world ko being rated in the worl ni.This is in terms of production with over 1000 movies in a week why won't we be third.QUALITY PEOPLE!thats what we should look out for.

Diction, costumes, directing, immortalizing the character to be played etc. These are basic details we should look into.I read Dramatic Arts in one of the best schools in the country specialized in costume/mask and makeup but had to branch out to advertising(whic is my 1st love) when i saw the amount of dirt going on in the movie industry.

We will get there some day.GOD HELPING US!

2 things:

1. not 80% but 98%

2. they are not wack but silly, annoying, IQ puncturing and a waste of good time.

All the dramas are predictable, lack suspense and twists.

WHY can't u compare our movies to american movies? don't u see what nigerian music has turned to? some can be compared to those abroad. at least mode9 can rap better than the silly 50 cent. so why can't we.

they have refused to improve. looking for quick money instead of quality

well nigerian films are sure trying
well their level of exposure and all.
what they really need is good script and also good continiuty, and they should always know that not all nigerians are fools so if they actually get away with the fact that chioma chukwuka's had her nails fixed in an epic movie, and jim iyke was wearing a slippers he wore as a pauper, again as a made man five years later, then there is a problem.
what i actually feel is that they should just go the extra mile to make the make believe believable, like asking the cast of an epic movie to grow eyebrows before shooting begins, people don't carve their eye brows back in the time or beta still fix some for them.

though most of the time the stories are wack but some just ned a little polishing and wats with the title?

well i like films by tade Ogidan because personally i think he is reall trying making an effort to put nigeria on the hollywood map.

lets hope we get there.

Try God's Own Country by Femi Agbayewa.

Its a nollywood/usa film shot in America. Looks like a step in the right direction.

You can sample the trailer on this link:

One of the main problems is that they're very quick when it comes to filming. They just want to get it out the way and have their money rolling in as soon as possible. Some abroad take years to make----but Nigerian movies can take a day. God help us!! It can be really embarassing, especially when you have friends and family who aren't Nigerians watching the movie with you. Sad

Nigerian movies are wack, but just a few are meaningnful.

We can't compare ourselves with american, european, indian movies.
Even if u bring all the technology to nigeria, our movies can't be like theirs because of our difference in culture. If u notice european movies are different from american movies.

Culture matters in the comparison of movies.
Mosst african movies are similar because of our similar cultures,

But we still need to work on our directing, scriptwriting and the likes.

Completely true.

Some people argue that Hollywood did not get there in one day. But have we yet given birth to movies of the class of "Gone with the winds) -1940smthg, "Sound of Music" -1961/2, Roots (Early 1970s) etc. Even Arelu series by Jimoh Aliu in the 80s is much better than the rubbish our house help stays glued to African Magic for.

I have a postulation though.
If you enjoy Nigerian movies more than the American ones, its probably because you have issues with understanding oyinbo people and its just too thick for you to follow. You would rather prefer a 15 minute film dragged on to 6 hours, in Part 1 and Part 2.

Finally, it is those of us that are most annoyed with it that can change the industry, and there are many things militating against the change
1. Do the majority even think there is need for a change. Will they appreciate the subtle plots and be able to infer, instead of being spoon-fed the story a sentence at a time???
2. Are the majority of our best writers not wasting away in banks and the telecoms industry???
3. Will the pirates let you reap well from box office earnings???
etc etc etc

But all these are surmountable, and we shall overcome !

someone made a comment about bollywood, those guys obviously sing and thats all they do. But we shouldnt be sentimental, lets not even try to compare it no nollywood. Nollywood brings out the shit out of bull shit. Its not that we don't know how to do this things, even most of this dump directors know they are doing the wrong thingm, its just that it sells more in Nigeria when they bring out such stories , a wicked man/ women does evil and the pastor comes and saves everybody. what a shame to the movie industry. My friends, i doubt if we will get there. Do we all realise that NTA has not changed in ages. Forget NTA lagos, try other states and see whats happening, you need to see the studio.
We have intellects in Nigeria, we have sooo many people who know how to do this things, its just people hardly do the right thing here,

Huhhhhhh , this is topic I love to the bottom of my heart.

NIJA FILM IS A RIGHT-OFF. FINISH.

However, I wont like to forget good guys like Tunde Kelani, Tade Ogidan, etc.

Someone said we are coming up. Indeed. Watch Aye (by Ogunde, 197X) and compare it with some films by Ola-Iya, Ara-Kangudu, etc and you would be sorry for Nigerian films industry. Compare Glamour Girls (1987) with nonsense films they produce now. truly, we coming up BUT IN THE NEGATIVE.

1 thing I especially hate about Nigerian movies is that most have Part 1 - 2 - 3 and for each part there are 2 discs, WHY?! Huh I am already discouraged from watching by the simple fact I have to get up and change discs 6 times! it's annoying.
for a movie that is terribly low quality (i mean most home videos on on video cams and cell phones are better quality). I can probably predict the end, and the audio where sometimes the music enters abruptly (loudly) I have to reduce the vol, then they switch to regular conversation and I have to increase the vol again,
abeg too much work just to watch a predictable low quality movie.

But nevertheless there're still very few nice naija movies out there, and I am optimistic we'll grow up and start appreciating quality over quanity, it is the quantity that earned us the 3rd best rating in the world but with the quality attached we will be a force to match hollywood.
