How To Be Respectful Of Islam
« on: September 13, 2007, 04:42 PM »

As we enter Ramadan, I have a question:

I'm a non-Muslim, but I'm certainly respectful of those who hold the faith.  What is the most respectful way to extend good wishes to those who celebrate Ramadan?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Visits would do
Calling them aftar Iftar(time of quenching the thirst from fast)
You could get snacks, soft drinks,or fruit jiuces for them
You can present a Soul/Faith Refreshing book to them (e.g books by Harun Yahya, Bilal Philips et al)
Send text Messages on Fridays to wish them Jumuah Mubarak
Urge them to share and be generous during the month
If they are 'middle-goers' advice them to improve on their faith
Greet them Salaam not Shalom; never think muslims see it as same, they may connote the same thing but they are not same. Smiley
, Best regards to u too, for wanting to improve your relationship for Muslims , u are appreciated too. Cool

@babs787 & talk2ahmed:
Thank you for your well-wishing!  It's very much appreciated.

@jayon:
I appreciate and thank you for your input as well.  As I sense your discomfiture with Islamic sensibility, please let me clarify my reasoning for creating this post.

It is not that I, personally, "admire," or harbor any feelings (positive or negative) with regard to a particular faith, or that I, personally, even hold any given beliefs.  Rather, it is that I respect that there are those who do adhere to faiths to which I may, or may not, adhere and with which I may, or may not, even agree, regardless of my values, views and considerations.  This is a particularly important time for Muslims and for it to be marginalized by non-Muslims is not in keeping with the spirit of embracing diversity that I hold to be important.

As to the issue of New York (and Washington DC and rural Pennsylvania) on 9/11, is it valid to blame such atrocities on the entirety of Islam?  To be sure, the individuals responsible for that were misguided and fanatical, but to blame the faith, itself, for such actions does disservice to its many followers who are, themselves, respectful of the sensibilities of others.

In short, jayon, my hope is to extend my hand in friendship to all those willing to accept it, regardless of affiliation.  Sure, there are extreme Muslims, much as there are extreme Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus--representatives of all faiths.  There are even extremists who exhibit no faith.  But the majority of those are, I feel, good people.  Of course, I'm more than willing to admit that I might be wrong.  Your perspective is different than my own, as you have much more familiarity with your faith then and your faith now.

We are all more alike than we are different, and I feel that, in all fairness, I must afford the benefit of the doubt in regard to my fellow citizens of the world.  And, for those unwilling to reciprocate, well, I can only suggest that such is their loss and not my own.   Cheesy

It is quite unfortunate that many of us behave rationally and so negligent with our speeches. Truly I’m just a new person to this page, and I felt highly disappointed that most of the respondent are not seeing reason; that will must all tolerate each other, and try to fight the indecency within our society and the world at large.
Let us try to be our brother keeper, be good to everybody, and show respect to everyone and be a `Godly' person; and then the World shall be at peace. Islam means peace. So don’t talk about religion, talk about your individual problem, about the corruption, stealing, fornicating, abuse of human right, about the attitude of our leader; let talks about our bad road; nepotism, favourism that is affecting you and I in getting the best from the government. Or even, How Faith can move a montain, `for to have faith is to have wing” and most importantly life after death.
May Allah continue to forgive us our sins. I believed strongly that God is enough to fight for Himself anyway. For every good friend of Islam or the believer of God, greeting to Muslim is SALAM ALAIKUN (Peace be unto you) or congratulate him/ her on witnessing another Ramadan by saying RAMADAN MUBARAK or RAMADAN KAREEM.

MAY GOD BLESS ALL

Just wondering:

When I began this thread, I titled it simply "Respectful of Islam."  I have noticed, however, that the title appears sporadically as "How To Be Respectful Of Isalm."
How might that have changed?  I, myself, have not modified it.

You don change your id again? Grin

Yes, those who understand the spiritual meaning of a fast don't go about announcing their fasts but there are instances where you will have to made it known in order to safeguard your fast.

With regards to what my Jesus said, we also have same in our religion in which you shouldnt let others know that you are fasting by carrying placards but there are instances which may force you to tell someone that you are fasting.

No shaking, I have been very busy and do not have enough time to be arguing or debating over what cannot be changed. We have been arguing over almost same issues day in day out that has not been yielding result, so I decided to be appearing once in a if I see anything pertaining to my faith and I am trying as much as I could to refrain from roundabout argument, God knows best.

I have been very busy with what I know how to do best (please don't ask me o) that has been very profitable these days rather than wasting my time replying what needs no response.

By the way, where is your name sake? I too like the g no be small. Hope you sabi your name sake.
