Nigeria bomb attacks 'kill dozens' in Damaturu

A series of bomb and gun attacks in the north-eastern Nigerian town of Damaturu has killed at least 63 people, the Red Cross says.

Witnesses said the bombs hit several targets, including churches and the headquarters of the Yobe state police.

Many people are reported to have fled the town after a night of violence.

It follows attacks on security forces in the nearby city of Maiduguri blamed on the Islamist Boko Haram group.

Nigerian Red Cross official Ibrahim Bulama, in Damaturu, told the BBC at least 63 people had been killed there.

He said two other people had been killed in attacks elsewhere. News agencies said the nearby town of Potiskum had also been attacked.

The BBC's Jonah Fisher, in Nigeria's commercial capital, Lagos, says people visiting morgues have reported seeing 92 bodies.

An unnamed local government official in Damaturu was quoted by AFP news agency as saying that hundreds of wounded people were being treated in hospital.

'Church torched'
Witnesses said the attacks began on Friday at about 18:30 (17:30 GMT) and lasted for about 90 minutes.

Gunmen then engaged in running battles with security forces.

A Roman Catholic parish priest told our correspondent his church had been burnt down and eight other churches also attacked.

He described gangs of young men roaming the streets throwing improvised bombs into the churches.

The attacks followed a triple suicide bomb attack on a military headquarters in Maiduguri, in neighbouring Borno state.

Military officials said the three attackers had died.

That attack is believed to be the work of Boko Haram, which has launched frequent attacks on the police and government officials.

The name means "Western education is forbidden".

The only crime these victims comitted was just being christians. In a secular state like Nigeria, the law to prevent this type of religious unrest needs to be strict. There is just no law that makes anyone who habors this religious thinking to think twice before they comit this crime. I have said it all along that Jonathan himself is a tragedy waiting to happen. He has no balls to confront these Notherners.

Nigeria needs to break-up now or never. I am faced with a lot of question at work why terrorism exist in Nigeria. I am a muslim, but I am just sick of these Northerners.

It is your kind of talk that feeds the violence. You have to learn to talk peace. Gone are the days when might ruled without opposition. The world we live in today is different. Nobody has monopoly on power anymore. Even mighty America trembles at the thought of a Jihadist suicide bomber with a nuclear bomb strapped on his body ready to blow himself up in down-town NewYork. Therefore, America talks to her enemies and tries to avoid conflict. Learn how to get along with your neighbour peacefully in todays changed environment without your AK47. What is needed is dialogue, not sabre rattling.

May their souls rest in peace. Amen.
It is not about GEJ. It is about choice; between what is good and  what is evil. It shows that some peeps have gone for evil.

^^ I understand your point. However, it is very clear that the reason these people continue to perpetuate these evil acts is because they understand that there is 'NO CONSEQUENCE' for their actions.

It's quite annoying when u see people use these kinds of unfortunate occurrence to score cheap political or religious points.

Some one is already using this as an anti north campaign slogan for 2015

The other is implying Muslims support this.

As far as am concerned, the perpetrators and the above mentioned two, are all extremists, they just happen to be on different sides.

Needless to say this so called perpetrators have never seen the inside of a mosque (I.e. Practicing Muslims) and are more of social miscreants and a dent on our collective conscience. What else do you expect from years of corruption, neglect and systematic syphoning of funds meant for social development of the youths? These are the evils of both the political class and the electorate coming to haunt them.

And think you not that u r from the south and hence safe, for that was the same thinking of the kleptocrats of the north before this dawned upon them,

Are you for real? You must be smoking panadol or some cheap stuff. This is done by muslims in the north and supported by muslims in the north.
Just shut your trap, if you have nothing to say. angry

This is not a religious fight, its a political fight, i am VERY sure that out of the 63 reported dead, 50 is likely going to be northerners and obviously Muslims.

DONT USE CRIME TO PAY CRIME, WHEN SOME CRIMINALS IN NAIJA DELTA  ARE BOMBING WILL CALL THEM FREEDOM FIGHTERS, NOW SOME CRIMINAL IN THE NORTH IS BOMBING WE CALL THEM TERRORIST.

YARADUA BRIBE THEM WITH OIL WELLS AND NAME IT AMNESTY. NOW THE NORTHERN CRIMINALS ARE ALSO LOOKING FOR OIL WELLS IN THE NAME OF AMNESTY TO BOKO HARAM

POLITICIANS AND RELIGION WILL DESTROY THIS WORLD

RIP TO THE DEATH

Lord save us,this people are getting emboldened every day, they no longer fear evn police stations& military formations,of course they long stoppd respecting houses of worship.I tink this thing is too well organised & executed for it to jst b by miscreants in d name of Boko Haram;some people wt financial muscle & hidden agenda are funding this group. Its time to stop dem in their tracts b4 it becomes too late, this level of sophistry can no longer b treated wt kid gloves& b solved by mere talking,d perpetuators here unlike d niger delta militants who were obviously after money, are not jst after some form of financial gain;they stand for sth more sinister& destabilising.
