I'm a microbiologist by profession and i will like other microbiologist in Nigeria and diaspora to join me in discussing: 'Life after studying Microbiology'. The question is, are you really practicing your profession? I don't think Nigeria values Microbiologist at all,

Good Afternoon Damogg.
Just stumbled on this thread. I am microbiologist. I think we are the ones to create our values so that we will be valued cos we are the one that know what the field of study can do for our society. Until we serve and create the awareness about what the naked eyes can'nt see can do, the microbes will remain dormant in our nation.

Hi guys.
I read Environmental Biology. Finished service last year october. Since then, getting anything called white collar job, that has to do with the course, has proved to be VERY hard. People even scoff when you say 'Environmental Biology'. They are always like 'what's this one?'. Thankfully,am fending for myself with my online programmes. I also currently have a minor admin role in an engineering company. Planning to quit the role as soon as my online ventures become strong enough to depend on and head back to school. Have always wanted to be a lecturer. So am looking at going back to school for my Msc and PhD. The current job climate in our country is one that doesnt favor people like us. In the sciences, the only ones that have a chance of getting employed without breaking much sweat are our brothers in the Medicine Faculties. Infact i felt so bad during NYSC. These guys were treated like kings and queens just for reading Medsurg,Medlab,Opt,Anatomy etc. And most of them were retained. However, all of us wont be doctors and nurses(even those that wanted,Jamb didnt allow,LOL). So,i'd advise biology undergrads to start looking at SKILLS they can acquire rather than depending on the jobs that don't exist/or are very hard to come by. Otherwise they'd be in for a rude shock. Looking forward to seeing more guys here.

Wow its cool to be here,am a medical laboratory science student with specialty in medical microbiology. The difference between us and microbe, biochemistry student in faculty of science is that we study 5 fields of medical laboratory simultanously (haematology, histopathology, microbiology, chemical pathology, immunology) then in our final year we choose one as our major area of specialization with others as minor. Then our microbiology and chemical pathology lecturers is as same in microbiology and biochemistry respectively in faculty of science but the only difference is we are taught as per in relation with medical diagnosis. Also we do other courses like pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, biomedical instrumentation and engineering, hospital adminstration, research methodology.Medical lab sci is a 5 years program with compulsory 1 year internship.

So brothers if you want to practice as a medical lab scientist go get your direct entry after graduation. There is a big disparity between a microbiology student and medlab scientist as to who mans a hospital laboratory.

toxicology, or forensics.

Also a microbiologist, but to be sincere, microbiologists has no place in the hospitals, or anywhere else, not even in Nigeria as a whole. We are not valued. This is because any thing apart from Medicine is useless in Nigeria. No wonder almost every microbiologist dash out of the field to business and IT.

I'm also a microbiologist, came back from service last year bt yet to be employed. well I jst enrolled for web designing program but waiting till end of the year to further my studies. I pray that God will help us all. No particular course is the best or automatic employment aside med & nursing, so lets pray for God's fortune to be our portion.

@Zeddicus,
I share your concern and submission.
However not many people have the privilege or wisdom to do what you
just advised, which is very brilliant.

The problem is which skills do you learn? and at what cost?

What I will add in addition to what you said is targeted upgrade.

what do I mean - don't make the same mistake twice.
Most students, just want to get into school, by all means. They dont care the course, after they graduate they
finally realized there are few or no jobs for them.

If you made that mistake before - not this time. This time target your development.
Find out where you want to work- then go and get trainings or skills in that area.

Meanwhile, there are employers who are still looking for you. The problem is that they can't shout (advertise)
It's your job to look for them.

I read a story of how a 2:2 grad who read an obscured course and had to upgrade to secure a lucrative job.
I attached the report, you can read it and find some wisdom in it.

In summary, go and add value to yourself. Then the job will come fast.

Take care.

Hello friends, just stumbled upon this thread and i wish to place my own comment. Currently, im studying env. Biology at YCT. The world is concerned about its env. E.g: global warming, desertification, flooding, extinction of species, oil spillage( bonga oil spill), freezing weather in europe etc. As an env biologist, u can work in any of these : HSE of any company, LAWMA, LASEPA, WHO, ministry of env. And conservation to mention a few. Env. Biologists are on high demand cos d world, even lagos state is very concerned about the env. An example is the plant a tree campaign in lagos state. Currently, env. Biologist are responsible for cleaning the oil spills in bonga, bayelsa state. I am proud 2 be an env. Biologist.
