Video Capture Card: Where To Buy And Cost
« on: March 14, 2006, 02:53 PM »

Hello Nairalanders, I wish to know where I can get a good and afordable Video Capture Card for capturing video from VHS tapes.  I want to know the cost estimate and probably the best place to get it in Lagos.

I will greatly appreciate your help.

I think what you need is a "TV tuner" card.  It works better with VCR signals than TV, but I'm douibtful about the quality of most TV cards.  I bought one at Ikeja village for 5,000 naira last year and I threw it away days later.

CD/DVD recorders may be able to take VHS signals directly.  See:

My brother bought one that was AUD$150 it does HD tv (which doesn't mean a whole lot for recording tv as most programs are still in SD format) but allows you to copy your own stuff in quite well. :-0

I've collected a ton of vhs tapes over the years.  Now that dvd has taken over, I decided to shift into high gear and transfer everything to dvd.  So I purchased a single unit (vhs->dvd recorder) that does it in one go.  Well, it turned out to be a waste of time, because most of the tapes have anti-copy protection on them.  Luckily, the store had a good return policy, and I was able to swap it for something alse.

So, before you blow $100 on a capture card, think!

Having said that, my current tv/capture card is an ati all-in-wonder.  Works great.  I've also heard good things about Hauppage cards.

Biggjoe, it depends on what u want to use it for. Pro video capture cards are very expensive. I am a video Editor and I use CANOPUS NX for EDIUS and its about N400k for the boundle and u need to be a professional to use it. otherwise there are capture cards of N5k and above but u can only connect DV cameras or DSR DVCAM studio deck to it, not vhs direct
