I believe the NYSC should not be scrapped, we are talking of a volunteer work force that we can use to the good of the nation. I am speaking of using these able bodied men and women in rebuilding the country while we have them.

If the government is actually paying attention to the rural areas interms of infrastructures like electricity, water, road I personally dont see why anyone would see these areas as a Dead end. Taking peeps to states different from their initial state of posting will only create chaos & hoax. I really hope the Gov is on the right track.
ENOUGH GHOST CORPERS THIS TIME, OUR GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO BE CONSISTENT & FOCUS IN WHAT EVER THEY DO

NYSC: The service year is one experience no Nigerian student should miss, Ask me why; Now to start with, if truly you want to have time for abundant opportunity, the service year is one of the best time or period to get and utilise various forms of opportunities. During the service year you also have time to plan your life after the rigorous academic exercises on campus, you have time to reflect on past mistakes so as not to repeat them, you have time to review your successes so as to map out strategies to improve on them and to gather yourself up for a great future ahead of you. One thing you should do as you receive your call up letter is to have a positive mind irrespctive of where you are posted to. It is whatever you call it that it will result to. If you believe the service year is going to be fun, profitable and rewarding, then the result you will get shall be positive , and if you have a negative mind, well, Just have faith in God that all is well. Never you have a negative mind towards the NYSC progrm. As for me, i served in Anambra state 6 years ago, Awka to be precise, and i must confess to you, i had a very wonderful experience that i cannever forget in my life. Infact i always tell pple that if i am to write the story of my life and the service year is not included, then the story is not complete. As a christian corper, you can join with the Nigeria Christian Corpers Fellowship in any state you are posted to and you are sure of a wonderful service year experience. I wish you all intending corpers a wonderful experience, God bless SHALOM!

NYSC is the best thing thats happened to me after secondary school. i thoroughly enjoyed my service year.was posted to fugar in edo state. at first i thought,i was going to the end of the world because it was 3 hrs away from benin.naturally wanted redeployment badly but at the last minute dumped the idea and thats about one of the best decisions i made.and the camp, though took some days settling down, after that it was fun all the way.i mean u needed to see all the intellectuals all bundled up in a compound. and they say universities are churning out half-baked graduates,i beg to disagree. the problem with it and also every other govt program is management.
make them no scrap am untill after my kids have gone through it oooooo jare.

@sergio dude thats gotta be the best suggestion ever. Only lazy ass graduates would need a whole year to plan their lives - you do that while your in school. Corpers recieve N8,500 every month = N102,000 for a year. This money could be invested in a number of different ventures and would encourage entrepreneurship. Graduates who need it can actually add value to themselves by furthering their education. I'll probably get a laptop and pay internet subscription and get to work honing my marketing skills.
But no. We get our butts stuck in the backside of nowhere wasting ONE WHOLE YEAR. If these so-called disadvantaged states need quality education they should pay their teachers with the NYSC funds

NYSC IS NOT A BAD IDEA, IT PREPARES YOU FOR THE BIGGER TASK AHEAD.I TELL YOU, SCRAPING THE SCHEME IN NIG. IS NT VISIBLE, SO,PROSPECTIVE CORE MEMBERS SHOULD POSITION THEIR MIND ABOUT GOING TO SERVE THEIR MOTHERLAND SOMEDAY-SOMEWHERE.
THOUGH,ITS NOT AN EASY TASK I MUST CONFESS COS DURING MY TIME,WE HAD TO FETCH WATERS FROM A CROCODILE INFECTED LAKE FOR BATHING, ACCOMODATE SNAKES INTO OUR ROOMS (PYTONES) ANYTIME THEY COME VISITING,E.T.C, BUT I TELL YOU, IN THE MIDST OF ALL THIS I LEARNT ALOT SUCH THAT IF I WERE TO STAY ALL MY LIFE IN LAGOS, I WOUNDNT VE LEARNT.

The Idea about scrapping the NYSC scheme shouldnot be used as a yardstick to judge if someone is Lazy or not. Does your support makes you hardworking either. Moreover are you more hardworking than those Truck pushers we see on the streets everyday when majority die of Hernia resulting from the stress they undergoe. Despite the fact that "travelling is part of edcation" but it does not make the scheme so important where majority (90%) of the corpers end up in xtremely remote villages as teachers. If actually there were no teachers in those villages, why did they build the schools in the first place, plzzz the Government is only looking for cheap labour. Have you really taken out time to ask the teachers there how they are been funded??? Please do! Before you start making unimportant remarks. The reason why peeps actually serve is because its mandatory because this Government we are talking about careless about her citizens. The school enviroment is not even fit for human existance yet its Government Approved, the students have to sit on the floor & others write whilst standing. NO BLACK BOARD (na waooh). when it rains theres is no class (imagine) Do you peeps really know that 9ja Governmnet spends far less than 20% of its national income on Education, yet most of our ministers children are schooling in Havard,Kent,Cambridge,Oxford and so on. Why are their kids not schooling here? Maybe then they will start paying attention (If the Government now decide to pay teachers in these villages say 100k/month i guess everybody will suddenly want to teach just the way banks of today are doing)THERE IS NO BODY THAT WILL NOT TAKE HIS JOB SERIOUSLY IF HE IS PAID WELL, MIND YOU THERE IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JOB FULFILLMENT & SATISFACTION. GOB BLESS YOU ALL.

Do you know how it is said that a person who hasn't seen the size of another father's farm thinks their father's farm is the biggest? Well, thats why you get sent to Taraba State, to go see the size of another person's father's farm. That way, you don't think all Nigeria is like the paradise you probably grew up in, and you realise what work there is for you to do to help build a better Nigeria!
Of course we understand why you would not like to be in a place with no running water, no electricity, and barely any roads, but neither do the locals who live in this godforsaken place in Taraba, where you will only be serving for just about a year! And if you really learnt anything on that degree you just got, you perhaps might be inspired to make a change, or at the least, that is what would be hoped, if you really learnt anything!
P.s. Corpers of 2004 who served in the Orolu Kingdom helped lobby the local government to supply books for the library which previously had no books. By the time they finished serving, the library had 20,000 books!

@ buda atum Paradise i grew up in! Dont get it twisted mate. Abi o ro boya ajebo ni mi? Grew up in Ketu, Alapere, moved to Kollington, Alagbado and now I live in Somolu (so i've got street cred ). You say we nee to build a better Nigeria and I agree but we've been doing this NYSC thing for years and please can you tell me what's been the exact impact on our naion. I understand and empathise with the needs of the people but these needs are the reason why we have NGOs. People should be encouraged to volunteer for such activities and not forced into a compulsory one year labour camp type vacation. Answer this - Has the initial purpose really been met and are the motives behind the youth corps understood by the average Nigerian graduate? We know that generally our countries youth are far behind those found in "developed" countries but, given the fact that we still happen to achieve results regardless of the challenges we face, we definately have the ability the surpass them. Some of the greatest countries in the world were developed not by physical labour only but by directed efforts of great minds. My point is that our generation cannot afford to waste a year doing mind-numbing manual labour when their minds should be in a constant state of development (though not everyone has the ability to produce original thought and create a product or service to positively impact society). Can't there be a National Youth Development Programme aimed at encouraging entreprenuership and empowering our youth with globally relevant skills in all areasof industry? Can you see the possible benefits of this. Finally, wouldn't you agree that getting 20,000 books for a local library can be achieved by a 20 man team within 3 months collective and focused effort via the internet? Less time, less labour, less resources. Cheers

A New Nigeria, As we enter into a new era in the development of our nation, it is clearly seen that there are opportunities around us that were previously unreachable. Thanks to the past and present governments the business climate in Nigeria has seen tremendous improvement and there is a significant increase to the availability of support for SME owners. However these owners of SMEs must show professionalism in their businesses and follow existing business practices. Amongst other things, financial institutions are on the look out for businesses that have a well thought out and researched business plan and have put up proper managerial processes.
QuikLinx Marketing Solutions in collaboration with FATE foundation and ABR Project Management Institute have put together a seminar on Business Development for owners of SMEs that want to grow their businesses. This package also includes THE BUSINESS GURU KIT - a resource tool with books on business planning, marketing planning, project management. The resource tool also includes over 100 sample business and marketing plans to aid SME owners in writing business plans.
Topics: FATE - THE BEGINNING: Writing a Winning Business Plan ABR - MANAGING LIKE A PRO: A Project Management Overview
Relevant to: *Aspiring and current Business Owners seeking to strengthen business development knowledge base
*Students willing to acquire business development skills and strengthen their resumes *Employees seeking advancement in their organisation

Wish you guys the best and hope you enjoy yourselves. I was posted to Bayelsa during my service 3 years ago. I must say, the camp was interesting, although, the conditions there were really very much low. I however got to meet some wonderful friends there and we're still friends till now. I however did not proceed to the place i was sent to work as i was told i had to go by boat! That really put me off. Anyway, enjoy it as it is a once in a lifetime experience.

NYSC, NEPA, Public Waterworks (if that is the name), Nitel, all of them fall under the same league of mismanagement, collosal waste and public ridicule/apathy. How can Nigeria move forward when the public institutions have consistently failed us, and the private ones are perhaps, interested in our pockets.

We Nigerians complain too much. NYSC is not as bad as people are making it look here. People have made that connection they really needed in their lives thanks to NYSC. We must not always get things that easy in life. Most of the people who are calling for the scrapping of NYSC did not even finish their service year. The are mostly the abscondees. If only they have waited a liitle longer, they might have seen one or two reasons to encourage it. Most graduates come out of NYSC to start roaming about the streets. But while they are corpers, they complain that they are wasting their time there as if they have a job waiting for them already. I passed out in August and most of my friends who complained that NYSC is wasting their time are at home feeding off their parents without any hope of moving out tommorrow. But while we were serving, both federal and state pay us enough to carry ourselves through all the months without borrowing even though we complain a lot. corpers pass out to see that life is easier with NYSC than it is out there on the streets armed with only your degrees. Let us not complain too much. It wasnt all merry in Nasarawa where I served but I met a lot of wonderful people in my life there. that alone is enough reason for me to keep NYSC going.
Meanwhile, in the spirit of Nairaland, if you are posted to Nasarawa and you want to be posted to Army Barracks, Keffi (a nice place) call me 08037738704.
I wont charge you for anything. The officers and men there are my friends.

NYSC is just another conduit pipe for stealing our national resources only this time our human resource is short changed in the process. 2 years ago or so the best graduating student of the department of accounting at the University of Port Harcourt lost his life while on national service in KANO courtesy the normal religious riots, he was from the eastern part by the way. Right now the orientation camp in ABUJA has been merged with that in KWARA, that of RIVERS was taken to far away CROSS RIVER state while that of LAGOS was moved to OGUN. This is another formula for massive looting of our funds.

i sincerely hope this suffering and oblivious illusion will end one day. the NYSC was a post -civil war project meant to bridge the gap and douse the tension created by that shameful and avoidable war. it is obvious that the project has outlived its relevance and usefullness (imagine the ridiculous amount being paid as monthly allowance) and should thus be either scrapped or upgraded to something that conforms with time and meets the aspirations of those of us trying to integrate ourselves into the real world of practising all the productive things we've learnt on campus.

It s quite unfortunate that my fellow graduates are suffering this much. Well mine I finished last year from an institution that is affiliated to Unviersty of Ibadan. Because UI does not incorporate us into the NYSC scheme, as soon as I finished, I started working with a Media house where I netted almost 50k per month.
With the experience I got there for almost a year now, I joined a PR comapny in a high rise 14 storey building in Victoria Island. They got my job defined, and gave me a reasonable pay which stands to be increased with time. I am happy that within a year I am gunning for ups and not being tied down by one programme call NYSC.

why would anyone one want to buy Buhari's idea?what good has he done for this country?i served in kwara state and then there was nothin like gsm network so our fones were a total waste for like three weeks which was difficult for someone like me but i survived.i served in the state capital though but it would not have made any difference if i was posted to a remote area because it goes a long way when u help people in those areas.i was lucky to be a member of the nigerian christian corpers fellowship arm of kwara state,i was not an exco but i still felt fulfilled when i reach out to people.this scheme is an avenue for self discovery so we have do learn to live with things and thank God for little mercies.i am totally against it infact i will sue the federal govt. if they decide to do away with it.i rest my case.
