If it was just about winning or losing there will be no need for them to train with all these modern "diets" i.e. drugs.  I think the problem with athletics is the preoccupation with absolute records.  There's little room for improvement through better team play, advanced tactics, et cetera. All they can be is faster, faster, faster, so they use "diets".

This is big money business here. You have to be on top to make the big bucks. Marion Jones made over 20 million dollars in shoe contract and product endorsement after the 2000 Olympic. The difference between been fast and been the fastest is about 19.5 million dollars. Some Nigerian athletes abroad uses some form of anabolic.
