The flag is cool, but the name Nigeria sounds like a racial epithet. In German, it is actually pronounced "Nigayria" which to me sounds like Nigger area. Why can't we change the country's name to something that reflects our cultural hereitage like the former Upper Volta did when they adopted the name Burkina Faso, the same way Gold Coast metamorphosed into Ghana? Nigeria is a product of colonialism and as long as we continue to be known and addressed as Nigerians, that colo-mentality will persist.

Some theory this isn't it? So of the 250+ ethnic groups who don't have shated histories, whose name shall we use?

Lesson number one: Niger, is derived from the Latin for black. And the Romans didn't use that in a derogatory sense anymore than an Italian uses negro or nero in a derogatory sense. Germans pronounce it 'Nigayriya' (as do Poles) because (I think you know this already), the jay sound hardly exists in their language. Kind of the way a Yoruba man woud pronounce hospital as ospital. . .

The Nigerian flag is truly unique and to make it better we need to redesign the green and white from  the vertical greens to the horizontal and having the coat of arms very small in the middle. This would make it look better.

We need to change our name as well. Nigeria has no meaning to us as a people. We also need to change our constitution to be a practical fedralist state. We are not practising fedralism at all. Our flag is cute but when we change our name, we must change our system and then our flag.

as far as i'm concerned i 'm proud of the Nigeria flag ,its simple and beautiful, its stands out

among all other country's flags.Every country has its own uniqueness,we should comparing

ourselves with u.s states flags.infact we should be less concerned about redesigning the flag.
what is of paramount now is reorientating Nigerians to believe in a New  Nigeria and be positive ,many Nigerians has given up on Nigeria, most of us don't speak well of our Great country because of bad orientation.WE MUST stop bad mouthing our country if we must move forward.God bless Nigeria.

may God help us AMEN

what is the difference between our flag and that of Italy? Its boring simply because we already have a low self esteem. What makes the US flag NOT boring is not because its better designed but simply because Americans are fiercely proud of it!

if we had the US flag and the US had the green white green, many of us would prefer the green white green! Its sad.

Changing name and color of nigerian flags
First, i want to start of by listing a fews old words that have lost, added or transfigured meanings through out history (classic example: the word gay used to may happy, now it means homosexuals. countless other words exists of which I will not mention) Hence, a word is just a combinations of symbols, alphabets etc or a a unique sound until it is attributed a particular meaning. Regardless of the history of the name of Nigeria, it is what Nigerians do that will define the meaning of the word Nigeria. Besides, changing the name of the country will not solve the ever growing corruption crisis associated with it. I bet you when Nigeria becomes a very well respected nation the name Nigeria will sound like beautiful music in the mouth of everyone (including the so called westerners), like the sound of the smooth springs in Jos or the beautiful melodies produced by the talking drums or the intoxicating and appealing voice of the traditional music sung during moonlight folklores.

Also, the same reasoning above applies to the color of the flag. like many of you have pointed out, the white segment, which means peace, can further signify the peaceful coexisted of the expansively diverse nature of the people (although that peace is being threatened by sharia and ethnic conflicts but I believe we will thrive). In addition, the simplicity of the flag is open to a wide array of creative interpretations. hence, the interpreted diversity piece. I still have more to say,  watch out for part 2. Cheesy
