You need to learn PHP (web programming language) and MySQL (open-source database engine).  A PHP/MySQL Tutorial is available at: www.freewebmasterhelp.com/tutorials/phpmysql/1.  Enjoy!

phantomcat, I like your name it reminds me of tomcat an open source implementation for web application development. Could you tell use the project your are trying to develop. Remember not every project is best rendered in any web container. Web containers have different strength and weakness in respect to developing web application.  The issues like security, authentication, authorization, scalability, reusability, maintenance portability, CVS repository, system admin support, introspection, interoperatability etc could not be addressed in many web application.

So to produce your bespoke application, you had done a little research about web containers or let us into your project idea and some digital gurus here in Nairaland will advice you the best container to you for your project.

phantomcat, if your project is primarily web-presence with focus to online collaboration between your company employees then, developing a web application or any application to this purpose will be over indulging! If you ask me I would simply download many open source free application that can render the same service you want to develop.

Open source web-presence

1. Plone
2. Simple Machine
3. Mambo

There are virtually hundreds of them if you do google search. These are the once I can remember at the tip of my finger
