<hard drugs clouds a persons judgement>

What about alcohol?
Alcohol and cigarattes are seriously addictive and harmful and you can buy them aroud every corner.

People don't take drugs and then plan to steal, they plan to steal and takek drugs to be able to do it! Its not the drugs, its the taker you should focus on.

Quote
And HIV-positive woman having unprotected sex with clients might be in the same category, but not those who take proper precautions and get themselves checked for HIV infection every three months.

No fun without attendant risk!

Kajad is the man, how will you regulate prostitution? Wishing that something should be regulated and the mechanism of regulation or the desirability is something else.

You also have to look at the cost benefit analysis, why not spend the money wasted on trying to regulate drugs and prostitution on education and improving economic wellbeing which may have a more positive correlation with reducing 'harmful' drug taking and prostitution than attacking the perceived problem head on!

Prostitution will end only when men stop sleeping with prostitutes.

This will happen when: Men decided on their own volition never to sleep with prostitutes anymore or when: There are no men left on planet earth.

Most naija men are shameless
Most of u don't see anything wrong with prostitution
because that's where u waste your salary
instead of taking care of your wife and kids.

why pay for a freaking f*** when u can get one from your wife 4 free?

That doesn't look very pleasant, but it's the truth.
Yall need to think before saying some things.
Imagine your daugthers or sisters being prostitudes
going from a dwarf's bed to a giant's bed
How would u feel?

whatever u feel is what u should feel for those girls u use.

eh, and kimbawhat other means of earning a living do you have for these people?

Perhaps I could pay them to be my personal rugs, lying down on the ground so I can walk on them and not get my shoes dirty.  Before you can go around encouraging all the prostitutes around you to try their luck at other things . . . you kind of need to have things for them to try.

Or I suppose you'D rather they starve than earn a living. . . because you have not proposed one possible alternative for a person with no other marketable asset and no funds with which they could learn anything else.

Or let me guess. . . you will say they should save the money they earn as prostitutes and use it towards a degree. . . which requires them to work as prostitutes. . . .

O Boy, what other means of living do i have for those people-prostitutes? here: (1)Are you saying that their back is totally against the wall? (2)are you saying they are the poorest of the poorest nigerians? if your answer to  those 2?s is YES, then i think you should go and review your general info very well. Nigeria is not the poorest country in the world. There are other countries that theirs is worse than hours.

When you talk of prostitution- and other kind of things that you would say would be naturally against a man/woman's wish under-normal-conditions, youre saying that the country has gone way below down into the well. As far as Nigeria is concerned, with all our international-certificates on corruption, things are still better here than in some other countries.

I once visited Thailand(sorry to any people having Thai relatives here), sometime '92, and boy, I was like, is this place sodom and gomorrah or what? Right from the airport you'll see a lot of things, you might just collapse if its the first time you'll go abroad, especially if you're a foreigner and you are black for that matter(they believe black men are the best in Bed since they have horse-like-sized u-know what), as a black man, you're already into problem. In fact, if a thai prosti could boast that she did 3-hrs with a black-man(by the time she describes the Huh?, she'll get some respect from her peers,  ull get "very-scantily" with emphasis on SCANTY-CLOTHED(if i were to describe these clothing, the nigerian women exposing themselves all around the country are still better dressed) females following you all-around, hotel, taxi, anywhere you go,  etc? and they'll ask you up-front, "hello sir, f*** night party sir, would you want to sleep with me? im cute, 1hr, 3hrs, im this and that" -they might use English or their native lang, in fact, from the plane, looking through their brochures, you'll see the native word for sex already, so  that wont be a problem. They are called escorts, but there is no escort without sex, Honestly, twas like i should just vomit everything I had eaten on the plane.

Immediately we got to the airport and I spent about 10-20mins checking out, even before we checked out, i was already feeling as if I should take the next plane out of that place. Now, thats a place where prostitution is legal, and thats why it has gotten to that extent. Even in the taxi, the driver will present you a brochure(for you to read while on the journey), and everything inside are pictures of girls(some in the act, some just posing), every kind of age, shape and color, blood group, and their sexual interest/areas of expertise, right from the taxi, you can book, make phone calls, and on such a deal, the taxi man will get his cut - in fact, the girl could be at the hotel before you get there.

At my hotel, I had to take my dinner early, rush to my room and hang the phone, because twas like even the receptionist was trying to negotiate a lady for my company during the night, all i was praying is jesu, ejo gbami o, thats after stating clearly i wasnt interested. In fact, i almost couldnt sleep because i hadnt seen anything like that before, twas terrible.

You'll see children, the kind that should be in Jss2 in Nigeria posing nude as prostitutes, is such their wish, or as a result of the society they grew up in?

I could go on and on with my story, but I believe no Right minded nigerian will want such a scenario for this country, They started just like we are, hidden prostitutes, then they were getting more air as time went by, until everything was legalized. Now, someone will ask me to find something for those prostitutes to do, where there is a will, there is a way, the prostitutes in Nigeria don't have to be prostitutes, there are a 101things, to result in gainful decent employment that they can get themselves engaged in, and not into prostitution.

@ Kimba

The west is not doing anything to Nigeria. Nigeria is a country full of religious hypocrites.

THE BASIC TRUTH TO THIS DISCUSSION IS THAT IF THERE WERE NO DEMANDS FOR PROSTITUTES IN NIGERIA, THERE WOULD BE NO PROSTITUTES. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WEST. THE WEST DOES NOT EXPORT PROSTITUTES TO NIGERIA.IN FACT IT IS THE OTHER WAY ROUND.

Besides, this profession has been since time immemorial even everyday among the acient isrealites.

I could go 4 Seun's idea even though i don't like prostituton personally. Handling national issues like this should be based on facts and reality not on your own personal religious beliefs.

N/B  Thailand has a lower level of HIV infection than nigeria, so i havent even seen what our religious hypocrisy has done for us.

Its not about a presentable job,
But they have always been there and if not for them more men would be raping women.
There women go through hell and they are only supplying a market for sick men.
Yes I blame the men more.
All the sickness in the world it was also some one that gave it too them.
A man going there and not using condom only has himself to blame.
In most cases the bastard will not even inform the wife , and with his license to kill , he will go ahead and pass the sickness to her without batting an eye and not caring what will happen with the kids.

well if people don't patronise the prostitutes they won't exsist again.and being a prostitute also depends on the person's morals because i know people in terrible situations and what they have never thot of is becomin a prostitute or commiting any other crime no matter how bad things get 4 them.
but those of u sayin it's ok just imagine this settin;
u go 1 night to have sex with an asshy and u see it's your daughter, your wife, your sis or a close relative or friend
will u still say:ok i'll just have sex and pay because right now he or she is doing his or her job and i want to mind
my business.Or u drag they sick behind home with u?
i'ld just like to know what u'll do if faced with the situation.

how can you ask a question like this ? what is the work of the law makers in your country? to make the laws and the executive arm enforces the law!! regulating prostitution is a minor work for the parliament, in many European countries they are called "sex workers" and not prostitutes, they pay taxes and are eligible to social benefits like every other citizen of any country. let this ladies do their work and with some respect also, i know so many sex workers and they are not bad people and maybe they are doing this because of financial problems or something else (fun) but this is their life for god sake and you`people should just close your eyes and behave like they don't exist and things will be alright,

Thank you that is the truth.

too many religious hypocrites that go to the mosque and pray,
too many religious hypocrites that do a lot of religious things,
and still close their eyes to the plain, cold and solid truth,
too many religious hypocrites.

Honestly, even in Lagos alone, the number of Churches are more than the number of Churches in some countries entirely. You see an assembly in every corner. Now, if Nigerians were that religiously serious, we would have been number one on Gods agenda.

but sage i disagree with you that :
Quote
THE BASIC TRUTH TO THIS DISCUSSION IS THAT IF THERE WERE NO DEMANDS FOR PROSTITUTES IN NIGERIA, THERE WOULD BE NO PROSTITUTES

I would rather think the case was the other way around, besides the influence part. You see this whole thing is about demand and service. Come to think of it - maybe how prostitution started, is it men who interacted with women and gave them the idea of using their body for money making, becoming a prostitute. Nope. Twas rather 'woman', knowing what man wants, decides to make it a commodity. At first, it might have been by force, no doubt, but later, the woman's body now became a free-will offering. Now this is where the problem is, right?

If Nigerian women would see the light and be chaste, yes there might be some animalistic tendencied men who would go about raping women, but at least we would have them behind bars. The idea that prostition reduces rape cases is totally false.

To say that there is a strong demand for prostitutes in Nigeria is totally false. There is a strong demand for drinking water, there is a strong demand for telecommunications, there is a strong demand for steady electricity supply, there is no strong demand for prostitution. I will believe that there is a strong demand for prostitutes when some men gather themselves together and begin to protest and carry banners around the country. I believe you can see my point now.

The way some of you are talking, if you were made the Minister of Health tomorrow, I guess the first thing you would do is to encourage prostitution. And im really suprised that our ladies on the forum have decided to keep quiet, i mean you havent been as vocal as I thought, especially on a topic like this.

@mamaput,
Quote
regulation;: they women should go for regular tests they should be allowed to sue men who don't pay and they should pay tax.
You want this country to regulate prostitution? i laugh o, i laugh o, i laugh o, i taya already.

Its like you don't know how far yet, i mean how far, about Nigeria.
Sorry, are you inside the 4-corners of this country?

Nigeria can't regulate fuel price increase,
Nigeria can't regulate PHCN,
Nigeria can't regulate the telecom industry
Nigeria can't regulate the area boys, armed robbers,
Nigeria can't regulate the lives of its citizens,
the on-going census is totally out of control,
The politicians, embezzlers and the like are doing their own,
both the prince and the pauper are totally out of control,
Nigeria can't even regulate itself,
can i still go on?

and you want Nigeria to regulate prostitution, for where?

Even the people that are not prostitutes, and are merely sick have to line up for hours and days to get treatment,
those on emergency are even saved by the neck, is this where a sex-worker would come and say, doctor, "i need checkup",
then she'll get a lawyer(which lawyer? wheres the money to pay the lawyer?, how many lawyers are willing to defend prostitutes?) to go and sue a police-man(for example) who f***** her and didnt pay? where is the case-file going to end-up. Would she have enough guts to even file a case? You don't know Nigeria o,
Which tax? how many Nigerians pay taxes? how many companies pay taxes for their staff? how many asokoro-dwellers pay tax?

And how do you regulate age-limit? When a woman looking 40 says shes 23, what are you going to say? how do you verify? show me your birth-certificate? is there a genuine way to verify a genuine birth-certificate in Nigeria? (forget the fake ones at the moment), tell me,

You know in Nigeria, there are some no-go areas, some things that will never work, Nigeria regulating prostitution is like saying you want hair to grow on your palm.

You are welcome to this post Romeo, and maybe you could do a little bit of a Nigerian-Nation-Info-Update(NNIU) before trying to see a comparison between European politics and Nigerian politicking.

If i begin to tell you the work of law-makers in this country, it will be another story all-together.

You see its better not to even start comparing Europe, America, etc., to Nigeria, because such a discussion will never finish on this forum. Regulating prostitution can be a minor work for the European parliament, but not here. Even the major national issues that are of greater consequence to National stability,  and should have been properly looked into by our parliament have been wissy-wasshied-over, how much less prostitution.

most of you talk about prostitutes as if they are poor, starving, struggling people who had not choice buit to go into the business.

go read the article. or simply open your eyes and get your head out of the sand. look around you. they are RICH. they are making money.

naija has not outlawed prostitution but the twisted moral outlook of most nigerians has created a situation in which there is a high demand for these women's services, and because most women will not touch prostitution with a 10-foot pole, they enjoy exclusivity.

history has shown that if you ban prostitution, it will simply become more prevalent. like armed robbery, it is a direct result of normal human behaviour patterns. A strong man with no money will eventually threaten and extort money from a weaker (unarmed) man.

the crucial difference that allows us to outlaw armed robbery and not prostitution is that robbery victims are NOT solicitors, they do not choose to be robbed, so you can punish a robber and expect the rate of incidents to decrease.

however if you punish a prostitute, the men will keep looking. The sharia law punishes the men who look, but as long as the women are there, they will make it easier for their clients.

so at the end of the day what is the solution? the solution is simple: the only time we need to intervene in cases like this is when there are unwilling victims involved, like with the robbery or rape victim. If a man pays his hard-earned money to a woman for sex, there is no unwilling participant, the woman was not forced to accept the client. Just as with alcohol and tobacco, the adverse effects of such activities should be communicated to all involved parties, and regulation should prevent the situation from getting out of hand.

Measures should be put in place to protect people who may suffer secondary side-effects, just as with drunk-driving laws and no-smoking zones, wives of patrons of prostitutes should be adequately protected, possibly to the extent that it becomes a deterrent to the man himself (if it is too much wahala to pursue ashy when ure married, why bother? a married man that goes looking for ashy is probably doing so because its easier than getting some from his prudish wife, anyway)

however one thing is clear: the women themselves (prostitutes) are absolutely not to blame. they are exploiting a thriving business opportunity, and are commiting no crime. If you disagree with them, fine, thats your opinion, but freedom and democracy mean NOT imposing your opinion on others. If you feel you should govern others with your morality, go create a religious or police state with your fellow bigots and live in regulated peace.

Prostitution can only stop when the women out there stop displaying their wares on the streets. When there's no commodity there cannot be a buyer.
I wonder what the FEMININSTS are doing about this hydra-headed monster defacing Nigeria. Africa is quite different from what we have in developed worlds where morality is almost extinct all in the name of human rights.

The folks that started this human right shit would be blaming themselves by now because the way sick people have turned it to their own advantage. These days, men are marrying men. They have reduced the value of marriage and very soon some peopz will start marrying their pets. The world is now full of sick minds and its so unfortunate africans especially Nigerians are seeing themselves in this light.

This trade no matter what u call it is WRONG. I do not have to be religious to know it is NOT a presentable job. It also has nothing to do with poverty. I have seen rich kids in prostitution and i know good number of poverty-striken gals that wont even think about prostitution. It should be squashed and severe penalties shld be meted out to anyone caught sleeping for money.

If Mamaput and Seun think it is right then ma advice is, let em put their sisters on the job!

@ reyes4eva  please don't get personal on me my sisters have nothing to do with my views. and on one is claiming that  its a good thing.
But its one of those things we have to live with.
These women don't bother me and i don't bother them.
Non of them have come knocking at my door to look for a man.
If more Mothers bring up their sons better, and more women are more open to sex , the man would not have to go outside to look for what he cannot get.
Sexual harassment takes place every were at work at school  name it.

Why don't you have these women stoned to death.
What of all those women thank mess free of charge 100 men and more so because they don't take money they are the good ones.
And what dose the gay world have to do with it.?
These women are human beings like every other person.
And to think one is something better is sick spically for a Christian.
Yes you are a bad Christan to think you are better that others.
And a worse Christan to bring my innocent sisters into it.
Judge not  says your bible .
Even Jesus eat with maria Magdalen.
You know what your bible says about throwing stones.

Once more its my view so keep my family out of it .

I am not talking as a Christian here but as a MORALIST. Don't blame the Men for patronising prostitutes. A kid that grew up seeing prostitutes in his environment has the tendency to grow up and patronise whorehouses. I refuse to live with it. Its sick and grotesque. Prostitution is a thing of the mind and it has nothing to do with poverty and stuffs.

Something has to be done and u should be bothered. A typical Nigerian is always unconcerned but these things will HIT You sooner than later. We are all product of the environment and the outside world see everyone of we-naijas as a representative of the country. Go to Italy and many european countries and see how these whores r giving the country a bad name and u are not bothered.

The fact that these things r legal in the western world does not mean it is right or SHOULD be right in Africa.

P.S. The GAY thang was just an example!

@Mamaput I have always loved your sincere contributions to topics. However I am a bit taken aback by your vitriolic rejection of the mention of your family members.

Earlier in this thread; die hard critics of prostitution have postulated that those who support of prostitution should put there daughters or sister to the job That seems to be there only argument though. But, someone answer them that it was up to his sister or daughter to choose whatever profession she want to do.

Having said that; if you are so passionate about your sister not being associated with the job then whither the sincerity?

many are married with kids. Some of my friends dropped out of school mostly they were expelled.
And i always stopped to talk to them even in the middle of the road. And i eat with them.

I don’t think reyes4eva meant ‘Trying to act White while BLACK’ as a racist statement. And women sell them selfs for more than only money.
lets talk of the silent partners.
Those selling themselves for jobs, exam papers , for nothing, for their landlords, the many women with their lovers( married women i mean)
The amount of women that give their husband a kukuk child.( when the man thinks he is the father of the child but is not).
Those women on the road are at least honest.

@ mamaput,
What i meant by acting WHITE while Black simply means u should call a spade A SPADE. Dont call a SPADE a broom.!!!!!!!!!
There's no way anyone can justify PROSTITUTION even if she is the poorest woman in the world.  Women are doing it for the fun of it and its so sad.
Majority of the chics on the street are driven into prostitutions because their minds are ILL.

I aint a racist and i do not have complex. I was just passionate about the topic because it sucks to me when women blame prostitution on financial stuffs.
Think about this, If every female broke-ass resorts to prostitution then 96% of the women in Nigeria should be full-time prostitutes!!!!!!!!
ARMED ROBBERY is to MEN as PROSTITUTION is to WOMEN. It should be eradicated because there r different vices attached to this profession. Prostitutes steal, they use drugs and they transmit STI's to ambitious kids  who has grown to see them as part of the society.

There are so many decent jobs out there for a woman. A woman should not stand up and say PROSTITUTION is the only way out of HELL.
