Do you happen to have some info of what is the best school in Port Harcourt? I heard about University of Port-Harcourt but was told it is a federal school. So, does it meant it is not that good? And what do you consider a good school??? I know my questions sounded so stupid, please forgive me. But I would very much appreciate if you can shade some lights on this or can refer me to someone who has knowledge in Port-Harcourt. I am a Port Harcourt guy and there are only two universities in Port Harcourt - Univeristy of Port Harcourt and The Rivers State University of Science and Technology. Both are very violent and have very bad histories. UniPort is better by far -- at least the wahala isn't as pronounced as the UST.

Thanks for the info. It is sad to hear that. But then, what is a better school close to PH then??? For computer science course perhaps? And how far is it from PH??? That has a better reputation??? Is Uniport a school, too at PH?
I know this is another topic but the covenant school? How far is it from PH???

Covenant university is somewhere close to Idi-Iroko [or is it Idi-Araba] -- all these funny yoruba names that have double meanings -- in the western part of Nigeria. Uniport is what we call the University of Port Harcourt. Yes, both schools take Computer Science [Uniport and the Rivers State Univeristy of Science and Technology]. Just take your pick.

FUTO is the best school close to PH. at least they don't go on strike that often. i graduated from there. i can't say it's the best school for computer sci but u'll certainly graduate on due time.
oh and yeah, every course at FUTO is 5 years.

@cOdec Thanks. But why 5 years ooo??? And how much would it cost for the whole course??? And you said close, like how far from PH? And any idea how much it will cost for board & lodging??? I would really appreciate it if you can give me more info. Again, thanks.

I live, work and school in UNIPORT while my younger sister is in RSUST. There is no comparison, University of Port Harcourt is not just the best in Port Harcourt and indeed the south south but ranks quite highly amongst Nigerian Universities in a lot of things. We have not had any violence - cult or otherwise recently and our academic calender has not been disrupted in the last 5 years. We have produced Miss Nigeria and Miss World and have hosted NUGA games in the last 3 years. Please feel free to ask your questions and i will try my best to give you an uncompromised answer.

Again, thanks. 5 years because u graduate with a Bachelor of Technology degree not a Bachelor of Science. it's about 1hr 30mins from PH (it's in imo state). it's a federal school so fees are well u'know. . . it's not so much of an expensive school. @otokx So, you say it is a good school for computer science or political science??? But please no offense, but I heared from some that there are no good school in PH and it saddens me to think of that for I feel so sorry for those that can not go or afford to a better or yet best school. I mean I say, make the best of it if these are the only school there & hope that in the future, it will be better, For I truly believed that Nigerians are very smart people. Just tarnished on what others do. So, hope u don't mind if I ask silly questions as how much tuition for the whole course like for computer science if you have any idea. And more questions to come oooo . hope u don't mind. Again, thanks.

off-campus accommodation (which i highly recommend), varies in cost. last time i was there, i'm talking 2003, it varied from say 15k - 55k a year. depends on where u stay. for living expenses, 30k per semester is comfortable. school fees - i think my last one was something like 3k.
these are 2003 statistics.

@agatonaa; i wont advise you to study computer science in UNIPORT but as for Political Science, UNIPORT is quite good. I must say that different schools have their different strengths.
@codecc; lets not get sentimental here, when they ask about the best school in owerri then perhaps u can start mentioning FUTO. The problem with we Nigerians is we deceive ourselves a lot. There is no comparison between Port Harcourt which is ametropolitan in nature and Owerri which is an abandoned village as the politicians have relocated to Orlu. Even UST is by far better than FUTO.
Tuition in Nigeria has been privatised. Indeed after UNILAG i think UNIPORT is the next expensive school. If you don't have money then please go to FUTO. But when compared to the least private university the fees are cheap. Private Universities take like N400 000 which is about twice what you'll spend.
Staying off campus is for the wealthy and adventurous ones with rooms going for like 70, 000 with guaranteed 6 hours of NEPA a day and water.

beef. did i insult UNIPORT? what does miss world have to do with anything?? i'm not particularly pro-FUTO if you must know but in terms of academics (science and engineeering) UNIPORT doesn't come close. it's a known fact, in my final year, 40% of the total jambites in all of nigeria put in FUTO as their first choice. every one knows including yourself that all those oil companies in PH are full of FUTO graduates. Go figure. and what does being in a metropolitan area have to do with one's academics? UST??? puh-lease! @agatonaa you're welcome, glad to be of help.

Does anyone heared NIIT that offers computer course class for 6 months??? And is it worthed & the fees??? Respond to this is very much appreciated.

Depends. NIIT isn't too bad -- I've written better code than guys who graduated with honours from NIIT [and I studied using books I bought]. It might be because I'm osessive when it comes to programming. They're better than most Nigerian universities however. Please who lives in Abuja? I've heard there's a programming school run by some Indians there [and they're very good]? Maybe you should try that.
