if you plug your ups to itself, would it continue charging itself and hence never die out?

surprised you have not tried it yet. smart guys like you should have tried it and seen that it works, perfectly  . but you have to verify if you are electronically static or not

Of course it doesn't work, because the UPS isn't perfectly efficient. You're basically just discharging your battery.
