I always knew I had a talent for writing but had never taken time to develop this talent. I write this piece for two reasons: One, to develop my writing skills and two, to showcase the trials of an unemployed graduate in Nigeria. I'll try to update this column as least twice a week Isha Allah. I hope you enjoy reading my journal,

From the moment I was born everyone knew I would be great. When I was barely three years old, my mum gave me a nick name which has stuck with me ever since. The name is in her local dialect but means ‘Big woman’ in English. I have since asked her why she gave me this name but she has still not given me any satisfying answer. Was it because I acted wiser than my age, even as a small child, or was it just a prophecy? If it was a prophecy, then that prophecy is yet to be fulfilled.

Now, it is three years since I graduated from the university; two years since I served my nation; two years since I last got a paid job.You know what this means, don't you? Hmm ,  When am I going to be what I ought to be…?

Even as a young child, I have never been one to be idle. After my secondary education, I got a job as a class teacher in a primary school. I taught for some years. Then I got admission into the university. During school breaks, I would engage myself in one job or the other. I looked forward to the day I would graduate from the university and finally get the job of my dreams.

Graduation came, and off I went for the NYSC scheme. I had waited anxiously for this scheme but when it came, my heart fell! I was posted to far away ‘North- East’; To Gombe state to be precise. Hmm … How was a ‘Lagos chic’ like me going to cope …? My parents didn’t want me to go, but as a patriotic citizen, I decided to brave all odds. I packed my bags and off I left to Gombe state, which would be my home for one year. I didn’t know what awaited me in this strange land. I hoped to God that things would go well …
