HIV and AIDS in Nigeria

Celebrations for World AIDS Day 2001
The first case of AIDS was identified in Nigeria in 1986 and HIV prevalence rose from 1.8% in 1988 to 5.8% in 2001. Since 1991, the Federal Ministry of Health has carried out a National HIV/syphilis sentinel seroprevalence survey every 2 years. The 2003 survey estimated that there were 3,300,000 adults living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria, and 1,900,000 (57%) of these were women.

In the 2003 survey, the national HIV prevalence had dropped to 5% from 5.8% in 2001. However, it found that state prevalence rates varied from as low as 1.2%  to as high as 12% in Cross River state. Overall, 13 of Nigeria's 36 states had an HIV prevalence over 5%. These figures give support to the claim that there are explosive, localized epidemics in some states.

At 5.6%, HIV/AIDS prevalence is highest among young people between the ages of 20 and 24 compared with other age groups. Nigeria's STD/HIV Control estimates that over 60% of new HIV infections are in the 15-25 year old age group.5

In 2005 it was estimated there were 220,000 deaths from AIDS, and 930,000 AIDS orphans living in Nigeria. There has been an alarming increase in the number of HIV positive children in recent years, 90% of whom contract the virus from their mothers.

Currently very few Nigerians have access to basic HIV/AIDS prevention, care, support or treatment

NDLEA Decries Drug Addiction Among Youth

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has alerted the government of Abia State and parents on the growing number of young persons getting involved in the business of hard drugs, attributing the ugly trend to the “alarming crime wave” in Abia.
Commander of NDLEA Abia State Command, Mr. Justice Arinze, sounded the alarm bell at Aba while parading 19 suspected drug barons, peddlers and addicts including a 13 year old boy named Ebuka Ekwualor.
“The abuse of narcotic drugs have led to an upsurge in violent crimes such as armed robbery and social crimes such as kidnapping and prostitution in Aba and Abia State,” he said.
Arinze explained that the drug merchants and addicts were arrested during a joint NDLEA/military operations launched “to dislodge drug barons and their cohorts from highly volatile black spots in Aba and its environs.”
He specifically named the commercial city of Aba as the centre of hard drugs in Abia, pointing out that the volatile black spots for hard drugs in Enyimba City include Bakassi Ariaria, Ariaria Old Express, Black Shit, York Street, among others.
“In these areas criminal elements gather to abuse drugs and thereafter plan, perfect and execute their criminal activities,” Arinze said.
To illustrate the rising involvement of people in hard drugs, the NDLEA Commander said that in a spate of here months 147 suspects were arrested and 82 kilograms of narcotic drugs comprising Cocaine, heroine, Cannabis and psychotropic substances were seized from them.
He said that 22 drug dealers have so far been convicted within the same period, adding that the Command was worried at the rate teenagers were being lured into drug dealing and consumption.
“The merchants of death exploit these tender age bracket to carry out their trade while paying them a meagre N300 per day,” Arinze lamented.

Out of all the tribalism that is going round in naija, bini seems to be on the neutral ground, but still our bad belle tribes are still trying to drag us into the tribalistic fight.

@Hero

the prostitutes that do business on LA Blvd, are they from Edo? there are Prostitutes in your backyard too so don't come asking lame question here. Was Bambi from Edo?

They are mostly Mexican and or various forms of Central Americans. Alot of the others seem to be African-Americans and European-Americans,  though I've noticed a massive spike in the number of Asian-American chicks out on the strips. Humm, some of the black chicks just may be Edo, you never know.  Undecided

@Hero,Is it true that African America girls like being  Las Vegas prostitute, whore, babymama, porn star, striper, lesbians, bisexuals, etc, what about African America Men.next time mind your business.

Sure, I'm sure some of those AA girls who fit those bills,  do actually enjoy what they do and or are, and then again many may not though are so out of circumstance. The same pretty much gos for every group in the nation. Oh, and this my business.  Kiss

You're not even from there,  so how would you know about this more than I who travels to the west coast quest often? Don't speak on that in which you know little about. The VAST majority of prostitutes out on the block in southern Cali are Hispanic chicas,  look up the statistics on it if you must.  Cheesy

LOL @ you little African girl talking about babymoma crap. Better there be babymoma drama than to simply dump the kids out on the street to fend for self as is the case the majority of the time in Nigeria and other African nations,  were the orphaned street kid population is disgustingly astronomically high, as the chicks keep popping out illegitimate babies in mass with no concern in the world for their children's well-being. It's actions like this in which is continuously helping crippling of the African economies. You're birthing more illigitimates than your tiny economies can handle.

Be sure to tell your Edo sisters back home that birth control is their friend; US IT!! Kiss

Come Mcdaddy?  You dey craze?  For you to be in this thread, one "Edo babe" must have wet your akata whistle!  We do not speak ebonics here on Nairaland ok?---and you are calling someone "bush or country"?  You have really crossed "that" line and are abusing your privileges as a "guest" on this forum.  We might not have the capacity to kick you out of Nairaland but we as "bonafide" Edo indigenes can "agbadorize" your "Nigerian-want to-be" behind on this thread.  So watch out.

You may be associated with some one you claim to be a Nigerian--which I honestly doubt. That chick has never inhaled any particle of "Nigerian dust" so please she is an American like you.  Go and attend to your business in America over there.  I believe Bush is still looking for brave men like you to free the world.  Being born to Nigerian parents do not make your wife an African or a Nigerian ok?

So stop all this your grandstanding and behave yourself before the maidens of Omo-n'oba N'edo Ukwu-Akpolor Kpolor descend on you.

We are still struggling to accept you here so do not blow your chances!  For the last time Africa is not a country, it is a continent oh ignorant one!

Don't make us rejoice that we sold some of our brothers please. It is either you are going to be part of us or stay away.

This thread is to celebrate beautiful, industrious and dignified Edo girls who are proud of whom they are, what they are and where they come from.  Take your bitching somewhere else please!  BET is on 24/7!!!!

Undecided That is very much so my wife, although be it about 5 years ago,  before the kids came. Now 2 kids later and full swing in her hectic medical career,  she looks quite a bit more matured now, though still gorgeous. You are absolutely correct in your assumption of posting someones picture up on the Net is disrespectful to the that individual,  though when one receives permission to do so from that individual before presentation as I have done by request by some individuals way back,  then all is good. My wife has posted a picture of me and the kids on one of the sites she's member to as well. It's no big deal.
