'Nigeria must be Balkanised'

The jailed leader of a separatist movement in the south-east of Nigeria -- known formerly as Biafra -- was released from detention at the end of October in a move analysts hailed as a helpful and diplomatic approach by the government to the region’s problems. But the secessionist leader says he will continue his struggle for independence.

“Nigeria must be Balkanised,” said Ralph Uwazuruike, the leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra. “Nigeria is going to break into six republics. All the geo-political zones of the country will soon become separate countries,” he predicted.Uwazuruike and many people in the south-east region, who mainly come from the Igbo ethnic group, claim they are being discriminated against by Nigeria’s federal government.

They say the central government provides less basic infrastructure such as roads, healthcare and potable water to the region. They say they are underrepresented in government, given their population and spread.

“There is a lot of tribalism here and we cannot allow our people to be treated like slaves in their own land. All we want is our Biafra. We want to secede,” Uwazuruike said.

Between 1967 and 1970 more than a million of the inhabitants of south-east Nigeria are estimated to have died, mostly from hunger and disease, during the Biafran war, which was about trying to win independence for the region from the newly formed Nigerian federal state.

Uwazuruike and other hardliners have continued to agitate for secession, arguing that the federal model has failed. The group mobilised large parts of the population in the south-east to boycott a national census last year, claiming they were not Nigerian and should not be counted.

Uwazuruike plus 11 other members of the movement were arrested in south-east Nigeria in Okwe in November 2005 during a crackdown on ethnic and regional leaders by former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo.

The men were charged with training an army and unlawfully running a society with the aim of waging war against the federal state.

If found guilty they face the death penalty or life imprisonment.

“Everything I was fighting for before my arrest is still there,” Uwazuruike said. “The movement will not enter into any agreement with anybody.”

Protests against Uwazuruike’s detention have turned into armed clashes that have caused the closure of markets and shops in towns in the south-east.

The release of Uwazuruike on the premise of allowing him to attend his mother’s funeral was seen, at the time, as the useful temporary measure that could calm tension in the region, but some observers want Nigeria’s President Umar Yar’Adua, to find more diplomatic solutions to the Biafra issue.

Nigeria’s Justice Minister, Mike Aondoakaa, said: “We granted Uwazuruike bail because we want to be seen to be treating everyone fairly.” -- Irin

I hope this silences those who think Biafra is about Ijaw oil. Except for the south south with its cacophony of voices (sorry languages), the proposed balkanisation will be based on language and ethnic affiliations

South South is not for Ijaw, nor Ijaw for South South.
Every tribe in South South will make her choice, which way best suit her to follow, when they Devil Nigeria will (R.I.H).
Ijaw will answer her name, EFik, Ibibbio, Anang, Oron,Ogoni etc. we will make choice, we are not going to be forced together again.
My prayers are, please GOD dissolve this Evil Empire called Nigeria soon in Jesus mighty name. Amen

Nigeria: Uwazuruike Remains Defiant, Says 'I've No Regrets'

LEADER of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, yesterday, sounding defiant, said he had no regrets for the activities that led to his incarceration for two years.

He told Vanguard editors that unless the spate of alleged injustice against the Igbo in Nigeria was checked, his organisation would continue to challenge the marginalisation of the South-East and campaign for a separate state for the Igbo people.

His words: "I have no regrets whatsoever for the activities of MASSOB. In any case, since I was released, I have been doing the same thing.

The clamour for Biafra is still on inasmuch as the injustice in Nigeria continues. I still call for a separate state for Ndigbo inasmuch as they are discriminated against in Nigeria. There is no level playing field and we will continue our campaign."

Explaining the various forms of alleged peculiar discrimination against the Ndigbo, Chief Uwazuruike said the South-East is the only zone in the country without an international airport. He also argued that the zone has the least number of states, local government areas and the least monthly allocation from the federation account.

"Above all, there is the issue of security. Our lives and property in Nigeria are not secured. Our people are not safe in Northern Nigeria.

When there is a publication considered offensive in Denmark, it is Ndigbo that are attacked in the North even when there is no problem in Denmark. That is very important to us as a people and it is unacceptable to us as an organisation."

On the three-month bail granted him, Chief Uwazuruike said: "I was not granted bail, rather I was given 90 days to bury my mother. It's part of the marginalisation and injustice I talked about. It is against natural justice," he said.

The MASSOB chieftain compared his experience to the release of Oodua Peoples Congress leaders- Chief Gani Adams and Dr. Frederick Fasehun- and the leader of the Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahedeen Asari-Dokubo, who, according to him, were freed unconditionally.

"All of them have been freed, no conditions, nothing. But, in my case, my mother had to die in order for me to be released. How do I bury my mother within 90 days? I have no money having been in detention for two years. It further shows the hatred for Ndigbo in Nigeria," Uwazuruike said.

Chief Uwazuruike who rejected any description of him as a secessionist argued that, "no law in Nigeria talks about secession.

What you have in the law is treason. S. 37 (1) of the Penal Code talks about any person who wages war against Nigeria and the punishment is death by hanging. S.37 (2) talks about anyone who conspires with others to wage war against Nigeria.

I am not levying war against Nigeria. I am not conspiring with anyone to levy war.

What I am saying is not secession, but self-determination, the right an individual has to say I want to be on my own.

"What I advocate is self-determination by non-violent means. I was a student in India for 10 years and there, I learnt about and borrowed the method adopted by Mahatma Gandhi. We don't believe in ethnic cleansing, we believe in the power of agitation, education and persuasion. For instance in August 2004, we organised a stay-at-home and people thought it was a child's play, but it was obeyed by the people.

If I say people should stay at home today, it would even be more effective because people believe more in me and the cause now than in 2004," he said.

Chief Uwazuruike dismissed the 1999 Constitution as a military document to which Nigerians made no contribution.

"The document is being questioned by many people. It was written by Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar. Did you make any contribution to it? No? Did I ? No.

It is more of a military document, a military pamphlet. It is not acceptable to me. It cannot be taken serious," the MASSOB. leader said.

Nigeria: Full Freedom for Uwazuruike

Lagos

After nearly two years of painful incarceration, the leader of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, was granted a three-month partial bail the other day by the Court to enable him conclude the burial rites of his late mother.

This means that if Uwazuruike's mother had not died, he would not have been granted bail.

As Uwazuruike recalled in front of his teeming supporters who trooped out to welcome him: "Now I have not been granted bail. I have only been allowed 90 days to go and bury my mother. It therefore stands to reason that if my mother had not died, I would certainly not have been released. Asari Dokubo's mother did not die before he was released. Ganiyu Adam's mother did not die before he was released. Frederick Fashuen's mother did not die before he was released. My mother had to die for me to be released simply because I am an Igbo man"

Without any emotional attachment to Uwazuruike's cause we think that his detention is one detention that cries up to high heavens for vengeance. Here is a man who was arrested and clamped into jail alongside Gani Adams, Frederick Fasheun and Asari Dokubo at the behest of Olusegun Obasanjo who felt that they constituted threats to his misplaced third term ambition. Since then Adams, Fasheun and Dokubo had long been released, but Uwazuruike was left to languish in prison. All the previous applications filed by his lawyers to secure his freedom had been refused on frivolous grounds. Now the court has granted him only three months so that he could bury his mother and afterwards return to prison. Is there any case that elicits more sympathy than this?

The Federal government should stop pretending that Uwazuruike's detention does not have any political colouration. Of course, it has. That is why we are calling on President Yar, Adua to order for his full liberty and the liberty of all the other MASSOB members in detention. That is one way to avoid different people reading different meanings into Uwazuruike's detention. Besides, what is good for the goose is equally good for the gander. If Adams, Fasheun and Dokubo are breathing the air of freedom today, equity demands that Uwazuruike and other MASSOB members be let off the hook. Since Obasanjo who ordered their detention has quit power, what is the rationale for their continued detention? Every citizen is presumed innocent until proved guilty.

In any case, why should a citizen suffer prolonged incarceration for expressing his views about Nigeria ? The beauty of democracy is that the citizens are free to express their opinion without any form of intimidation, persecution or victimization. The contrary will be totalitarianism and dictatorship which we witnessed during the military regimes.

Uwazuruike and other MASSOB members are not dangerous to the Nigerian society. They say they are fighting against the marginalization of Igbo in Nigeria. So far they have been going about this in a very non-violent way. They are not carrying arms and waging an attack on the citizenry. More importantly, the right to self-determination has been recognized in several United Nations conventions, instruments and documents. Therefore, the agitation for such a right in Nigeria should lead to dialogue and negotiation. Resort to open intimidation, use of force or imprisonment can only escalate the problem.

The best thing for the Yar'Adua government to do now is to order that Uwazuruike and other MASSOB members languishing in jail should be given their full freedom. Anything short of this is playing the ostrich.
