people, we need to appreciate whatever we are, this is a crazy world we are living, the lightest people want to get darker by getting a tan, the darkest people want to get lighter by bleaching, be happy with who God created you to be, I remeber back in the days in nigeria its was about the bigger girls, now its all about "lepa" the slim girls, approve yourself first then maybe someone might approve you too.

wow, Dakmanzero and Drusilla - excellent points! looks like we personalize undesireable traits by calling them "ugly", giving them an even worse sting, as it were. do we do this to somehow "shame" those who do not fit into our particular groups? and does this have a more practical reason? say we are of a certain tribe, with certain traits, and an outsider comes along who attempts to breed into our tribe. if this outsider doesn't possess the same physical traits, are we genetically fearful of what interbreeding might do? do we deem "ugly" anyone who does not fit the tribe's physical standards? just a question. I welcome any and all answers. Thank God I was raised in a family which encompassed the rainbow, as far as skin tones go. But in some ways, it wasn't fair to the light-skinned ones. My brother said he was plagued for years by his light skin. As kids, we used to call him "Clar", which meant "clear", just to further emphasize how much lighter he was than the rest of us! how cruel! And to make it worse, he suffered from vitiligo, which left even lighter blotches of skin on his arms. He wears long-sleeved shirts to this day, even in the summer. He told me recently he would never show his arms because he was tired of the comments about the difference in his skin tones. My sister, who is only slightly darker than my brother, uses bronzers (whatever THEY are!). I asked her why, because I thought she had a lovely color, but she got embarrassed and wouldn't comment! But now I will reveal something - it can be very rough to be the "brown-skinned" one. Why? Because you're never noticed! It's true - if I am in a room of 13 people, exactly six will be lighter than me and exactly six will be darker than me. Do I go out of my way to find this out? Maybe, maybe not, It's just always been a part of my life. I have noticed that most guys gravitate towards the lighter or darker girls in a room. And don't put White guys in the mix. They almost always go for the darker women, whereas, Black men go for the light ones. I started noticing this phenomenon in college. No matter what I did to fix myself up, if I was with a White girl or light-skinned Black girl, a Black guy would pick her first. And when I was with a dark-skinned Black girl, the White or Hispanic guys would choose her before me , gee - maybe I was just "ugly", (lol!)
Gee whiz - when are we EVER going to love the skin we're in!!!

To Hotstepper: why do you wish you were darker-skinned? I am curious. If, as so many people on this thread purport, having light skin is a premium, why would a person want his or her skin to be otherwise? Again, I am only curious. I apologize in advance if this question is rude - I am just fascinated by the mind of human-kind and by what factors motivate us to think as we do. lm

i believe that we are what we are.I'm black, i'm dark skinned.if some people can't accept me for that then its their problem not mine. we need to ask ourselves though. "if u changed your skin color from black to white, would it make u a better person than u already are?" i know the answer is no.people should learn to be proud of whom they are.I walked past a pub yesterday and a group of white people (about 20 of them) were havin drinks outside.one of the guys suddely yelled "power to white people" and i thot wow people are stil this ignorant in 2006.What does that actually mean? "power to white people"!!!does that mean that they are stronger than us, or they are better than us,or their lives are better than ours?totally pointless.your skin colour is your skin colour, black is beautiful and so is white.Accept people for whom they are and look past their skin colour. for example,The guy i said was being silly at the pub, if his life was in danger and i could save him would he reject my help because i'm black and die in the process?i think not.

We will never be equal even if we were all of the same sort i.e same colour. There will always be something that us as Human Beings will discriminate against.

hotstepper - wow! i have never heard of the lagos mosquito. what did it do to you? I, myself, have suffered from contact allergies all my life. I'm light-brown skinned and have worn every bump, bruise, scratch or whatever on my skin. My scars have never gone away. One of my sisters, who is darker than me , has always had the smoothest skin in the world! in my family, everyone has always considered my sister the pretty one. i just attributed this to her flawless skin tone. maybe i'm wrong. But I do believe, the lighter you are, the more difficult it is to keep up the quality of your skin. does anyone have any real and plausible treatments for skin discolorations? lm

Personally i think it is a choice thing. Like when it comes to whites, a blond gets noticed before a brunnette. Even if the brunnette is prettier. I guess being fair in our society is more striking, not necessarily more beautiful. Cause it is rarer to see a fair person than a darker skinned person in most of our communities. I am fair, and my teens were hellish, cause i had a bad acne and scarring problem. My face was covered in black spots, and i used to beg God to make me as dark as my sisters, so the scarring wouldn't show, it got to a point where I started tanning. No kidding, spending hours sunbathing. Luckily, my skin has cleared up now, so i am more confident now.

i didnt assume it was literal, thats y i asked wot she meant by it 1st. when i sed i've been with both black and white girls, i meant relationships. and when i sed no difference, i meant a relationship is a relationship, the same rules apply.u still have to love and treat ur partners with respect. accept them for whom they are and compromise accordingly(if u really love them) and above all, honesty and communication. it doesnt matter if they are dark skinned or light skinned or if its a gay or straight relationship.

Nnekie - you have an excellent point! Maybe WESTERN society does view those that appear to be "different" as undesireable. I am always fascinated by the blonde/brunette thing. I am intrigued by Kirsty Alley (Cheers, Veronica's Closet, etc.). She is a beautiful White woman who lost a lot of weight and why does she have to be blonde? Most of the women I know, who loved her in her "fat" days, loved her hair. It was a beautiful chestnut color. Does skinny, or losing a lot of weight, have to be equated with being blonde?
