Good post Linda. That is how it is, in short. In fact, here in the US, a black guy may date a white woman to make himself feel more important in society/make him feel better about himself. But it all stems from self hatred, like you said.
And Angela - yes, all shades are "beautiful" but we all have personal preferences. The problem is not that there are preferences, but that somehow the preference of BLACK people is usually light skin. That is the problem. It is that black/African people disproportionately dislike more African features. If half blacks liked light skin and half liked dark, it would be one thing. But it is not split 50/50, and what might be a personal preference for one person is an unfortunate pattern of self-hating preference when applied to blacks as a group.
A lot of people say to me, when I say that I look down upon a lot of black guys who prefere white girls, that I should let people pick their own preference, but I am not angry at the individual's preference, but rather the pattern preference amoungst us as people. The same can be said for those who prefer light skinned women. Unfortunately, it is hard to distinguish what is a personal preference and what is a preference influenced by one's own self-hatred. There is no way to diferentiate. Usually, I must say, it is the self hatred.

Hallo Linda. Wondered where you'd been I assume that since you are familiar with my posts, you are probably aware that I really do not take skin colour into account when determining if someone is attractive or not- at least as far as determining the end result is concerned. As I said before, some features favour light skin, and some features favour dark skin. I also find it easier to be attracted to dark skinned females because they are more likely to have an even skin tone. The lighter the kin, the more 'variations' tend to be apparent! However, that aside, Alek wek is just plain butt-ugly. Personal opinion, actually. And based purely on her physical appearance. Its not because of her dark skin, she's just ugly, period. She's the white man's idea of what a 'classical' African SHOULD look like, thus giving us a veiled message- everything good you see in yourselves came from us, one way or another. Agbani is beautiful and pure African. In fact simply comparing the MTN faces of Africa to Ms Wek should show you how unrepresentative of 'Africanness' she is. AND the faces of Africa are usually dark skinned.

Dark complexed individuals have always been criticized about their complexion, whether you are from an african country or from the united states(southern states-Alabama, Georgia, etc.) Ignorant people choose to degrade dark-skinned individuals, especially females. However, light and brown-complexed females are portrayed to be better treated, better looking than dark-skinned females. I am dark skin (chocolate). I am very proud of my dark-skin. It represents my culture, Nigerian-American. My father is from Nigeria and my mother is from Alabama. Most of my family members are dark skinned. I love how rich, how smooth, and beautiful our complexion is. I was always in competition with someone who was lighter than myself. People wish they were dark skinned. Look at white people, why do they tan so much? Being degraded and insecure about your complexion describes you as disrespecting yourself, desrespecting your body by bleaching, and disrepspecting your culture!

Yup Miracle
My Dad is from Alabama and my mother from NJ (I'm all AA). It is just a perception of someone being better - because a beautiful girl is a beautiful girl, and complexion really has VERY little to do with it. People act as if it does because they percieve lighter as powerful and having more potential - they percieve it as being more respected. But these prejudices have nothing to do with the look of dark skin.
Personally, I know girls of any complexion can be beautiful (or ugly) and I don't pick a mate using their complexion as a factor. At the end of the day, I always have hoped to end up with a darker skinned girl because I feel like if you are walking around with a light skinned girl you look like all the self-hating black people out there. But, like I said, that is not a factor to me - I didn't have more interest in my current girlfirend because she was dark skinned - that was coincidence.
Sorry, I'm digressing.

hey, I'm new to this forum. just came across this thread while researching a show i'm writing about nigerians in uk.
wow, a thread that has lasted 2 years! is that typical on this forum? i always say, we nigerians love 2 talk & talk & talk, I seen there's been some intelligent comments & some rather more personal agendas, probably a lot more intelligent debate than most forums.
as a mixed race man in the uk, i've never felt much difference between myself & my dark skinned friends - we're all black, even if i'm "redskin". if they feel the difference, they never make a big thing about it, the only time i feel any difference is when i go to nigeria. when i went back for the first time & people called me whiteman, i got mad as hell. then, i realised that most people in nigeria seem to love white people like crazy. maybe because they haven't met enough to know how nasty white people can be. i can't think of any nigerians in the uk who love up white folks.
someone commented way back down the thread that the skin thing is more a controversial issue for women than for men. women judge each other and are judged much more on their physical appearance than men are. i think men, or at least UK black men, are a bit more pragmatic - we figure that for every girl who likes light, there's just as many that like dark, and vice versa. myself, i prefer very dark women, but i've got a naija friend who is very dark, who likes yellow women. everyone's got their own tastes. some people like to colour contrast, some like to colour match.
what is dangerous is where the media & fashion foster the myths of white & light are better - in so many nigerian adverts for cosmetics, the female models are very light, which builds a perception of lighter is more beautiful. i know that people have said that Agbani Darego wz an example of how dark models can succeed. but i wonder if she was picked as Miss Nigeria precisely because she was dark and thus more "Nigerian". I don't remember, but have there been any lightskinned Miss Nigerias? anyway, 1 or 2 successful dark models does not counterbalance a global fashion & cosmetics industry tendency to prefer white and lightskinned. indeed, L'Oreal, who hired Agbani as their face in 2002, have just been found guilty of racist employment practice in France. at the bottom level of model reps doing marketing, L'Oreal would not hire anyone who wasnt white.
between, did anyone else notice the adverts for skin lightening treatment on the header to this thread? product placement is a bitch sometimes eh

Ever heard of beating a dead horse?
That's how I feel with these issues. They make me just want to dissapear - my god - will it just END with the skin tone. Everyone agrees right? Isn't it so tiring to hear about skin tone all your life?

light kskinned or dark skinned, beauty can come from both ends. there ca be some ugly black women and vice versa. But the fair skinned girl is at an advantage, she is more attractive because of the complexion. look at genevieve and omo T. genny is more beautiful even though omo t is lighter and equally beautiful. For people like me that came into this world light skinned and still use vaseline lotion till date, haters shld not hate me because am fair an fly, period.

wow, an Afro-Brazilian who's proud to be black. Danm, this is a historical event we're witnessing here folks!! You don't get these types very often, most of them will fight tooth and nail in resistance to being associated with anything in which would associate them with the dreaded BLACK, NEGRO and or AFRICAN title. That's why despite Brazil having a population in which is obviously at least 50% black is recorded as having only a 6% black population, because the blacks are ashamed of their blackness and thus refuse to be addressed as such and or Negro or anything of the type. Hey, Brazil girl, you look like a prime example of a Afro-Brazilian in which could easily escape the dreaded "Black" label as so many of your folks jump at the chance to do; why is it that you've chosen to accept your blackness and why is it that so many of your fellow Afro-Brazilians try so hard to escape it? Why did you'all never challenge the system and stand up and fight for who you are and your right to proudly live as such like we African-Americans have done?

@ Hero, Brazil is not the only country where denial of black heritage occurs, there is Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago and even America. People here will try to convince you into hell fire that they are mixed with Irish, Panama, Cherokee, Jeep, Allspice, black pepper anything. They will try to convince you how the only thing that ruined them is the fact that they did not get the "good hair" otherwise you cold tell their mixed. And if you ask the person how come they are mixed everything but have dark skin then they will show you there breast (horrible experience) or the bottom of their feet to show how they are not mixed.

The worst of all are people from the Carribbean Islands. They have the worst inferiority complex of all black people on the face of the earth. They would cajole Africans and make fun of African features, culture and practices forgetting that their forefathers left Africa naked and in chains.
Suddenly the hard labor in Oyinbo plantations and frolicking with oyinbo has catapulted them above Africans in their thinking. Before you talk one they'll call you a goat hearder and a bush African. People that should be tracing their history getting mouth to call others names. What other group of people came and lost their culture, their heritage, names, language? They are of all African descendants most miserable. The sad part is that most don't even now this. That is what slavery can do to one's mind.

Babyosisi. Correct if I am wrong, who sent them to the islands in chains? Well unless the Europeans lied then it wasnt there uncles, fathers, brothers et al who sold their own, instead they "volunteered" to be taken, And another thing, the Caribbean, though primarily make up of african slaves descendants, also have a large Indian, Portuguese, Spanish, European( my maternal grandmother) and the Natives( Arawak and Caribs) who were there on the islands long before those poor slaves were brought there. I think the problem most west Indies have with Africans is their remorse for selling their own flesh and blood then having the audacity to use it as a curse,
