Cheap Computers in Nigeria
« on: July 23, 2005, 12:30 AM »

As you all know, Nigerians love free things ("awoof").   I have seen fellow Nigerians spend hours online, spending their money, looking for 'free SMS'! The only thing we love almost as much as what is 'free' is what is 'cheap!'

There is this company that has been advertising very cheap laptop and desktop computers on 'Compulife Magazine' (Wednesday Guardian Newspaper, used to be Tuesday) every weekfor several months.  Their prizes are so good that I've decided to download their price list and share it with Nairaland members planning to buy computers soon:

  • Dell Latitude C600 Laptop, with Pentium III 750Mhz CPU, 128 Mb RAM, 20GB hard disk drive, sound card, modem, 14.1-inch TFT Display, and touchpad - 79,900 naira
  • 1.6GHz Pentium IV System Unit in a Siemens Tower XL Case, 256 Mb RAM, 20gb hard disk drive, with CD-ROM drive, sound card, and LAN card - 49,900 naira
  • 1.0Ghz Pentium III System Unit (Maxdata Artist) with 256mb RAM and other accessories as above - 32,900 naira
  • 400Mhz Celeron System Unit with 128mb RAM, 4Gb hard disk, etc. - 9,900 naira

They have several PCs between 10,000 and 16,000 naira, so if you're a student or thrifty PC buyer you should take a look at this company.  I've only listed the offers that caught my eye.  The Company's name is CeBroker, and you can visit their website at www.cebroker.ch.  Thanks.

Cebrooker? They've been advertising in Tuesday (now Wednesday) Guardian for years. Their prices are outrageously cheap, and the building they claim to be in (somewhere in Ikeja) is notoriously difficult to locate!

Incidentally, how much is the N79,900 in £?? Am familiar with the laptop market and you'd get that kind of specifications for less than £200.

£200 at the going exchange rate is N46800.

Meaning the price is already more or less about 80% profit.

70%, Jogego, and this is based on the dubious assumption that the cost of importation is negligible.

Please feel free to post about other PC resellers with better prices that CeBroker; I like their prices, but I would be happy to find something cheaper.

Like I said, I don't know nothing about the market in Nigeria but for the market in the UK, for a brand new laptop, expect to spend between £399 to over a thousand pounds.

Most of those being sold in Ikeja are second hand anyhow, I wouldnt spend more than £200 on a second user laptop.

A lot of online retailers in the UK sell them. And a lot of adverts are placed in Computer magazines.

My advice, get an IBM or a Dell. Steer clear of Toshiba.

What I used to think before using an IBM thinkpad. The engineering and attention to detail is not a joke. Guess thats why they cost an arm and head when you buy them new.

@Jogego, wetin Toshiba do you now?

I love Toshiba laptops, and I am currently using one now. Also, I've purchased so many of them for my company without any regret.

Re: Cheap Computers in Nigeria

The first laptop I bought was a Toshiba. That was while I was in NIgeria. It was brand new and from day 1 I saw grief. It came with Win ME and not until I installed windows 2000 and later win XP on it before I had any sanity. That said, I don't know anyone who has used one without grumbling about it.

Maybe you are lucky or maybe am the unlucky one? Who knows. All I know is that even the Dell and IBM that I bought as used, have been much better for me than the Toshiba ever was. And going forward, its either an IBM thinkpad or nothing. Of course right now, I can't justify over a thousand ££ on a laptop so I have to buy used.

Those "cheap" prices sure aint cheap.
Just last week, a friend of mine got a 2.4GHZ Celeron with 40GB HDD, 256MB RAM, DVD-ROM, (lan/sound/video) + a HP monitor for 48,500.

Cheap or what !

jogego, you are are talking about the software that was installed on it, if the software is bad, the pc is as good as useless. And who does not know that Win 95, 98 & Me are pieces of hacked up solutions by M$.

Hello,

I am an expat diver in Nigeria and one of my great Nigerian diving colleagues is looking for an affordable and good laptop. It is a bit of a hassle to bring one for him, since I carry my own as well, so could anybody of you tell me where (preferrably in the Port Harcourt area) we could find shop(s) where they sell laptops? You can mail info to my emailaddress (nigeriadiver@yahoo.co.uk) and I will pass on the information to my colleague.
Your help will be most appreciated!!

Well, cheap isn't ever really efficent. If you want to go for a lappy you have to consider certain factors, like battery life, and wifi, bluetooth etc. I'd advise either an Acer, Dell or some sort of HP. 150G or there about in range,  Which is about 500 quid.
