Its obvious following the last census that Lagos has over 10million people living in it. Statistics reveal that the number is increasing in geometric progression. Its no longer news that Lagos is congested. When there is congestion, people will look at the next available comfort zone. Lucky for Ogun state, it is the nearest in proximity to Lagos. We have seen quite a number of Lagosians going as far as Sango, Ifo, etc to build houses.
It automatically behoves on Ogun state to take advantage of this. It will bring a lot of economic empowerment and improvement on the state. It will urbanise the state more rapidly. But what do we see? The roads linking the state from Lagos from every way are not going to allow this to come to pass.
1. Sango - the ongoing bridge construction at the Sango area of the state when you come in from the Lagos-Abeokuta Exp Way, is now abandoned for reasons that remain a mystery. This automatically causes a terrific traffic jam at that site.
2. Iyana Ota - that is the way leading into the state immediately after the former toll gate opposite the Gateway Hotel, Ota. It is supposed to be a bye-pass away from sango. That road is washed away with erosion. Vehicles that intend to escape the Sango road, use this very road. What do you get? They get trapped. On a sunday afternoon, you find yourself spending an average of one hour on a traffic jam on the same road that is less than half a kilometer in length.
3. Lagos-Ibadan Exp. Way, that one is very popular in the media for ghastly motor accidents.
We are aware that some of these projects are federal concerns, but a state that has a vision will not wait for the federal govt. to decide the rate at which development will take place in it.
I urge Gov. Gbenga Daniel, (and Nairalanders who are in contact with him) to please look at this and see how to turn this situation around. He should remember, that his tenure is coming to an end by the day. Only what he does will speak after he is gone. He should leave no stone unturned in turning the state around economically by taking advantage of the population explosion in Lagos.
I wish him well!
