Woke up feeling very cool; i don't know if it was because I knew that I will not be going to church. Its not easy going to church that is some distance from where you reside. Listened to a sermon from Dr. Charles Stanley and one other guy on christian TV, it was quite nice. Unlike our tongue lashing, power screaming pastors, this guys were quite gentle and they spoke reasonably. I learnt of the favor of God and it was quite an interesting programme. My friend came around to take me to the cyber cafe where we were supposed to do some light maintenance but we had to get some diesel first in case there was an outtage from the public electricity supply. Driving along the east west road from the university junction up to airport intersection by obiri ikwerre there was no diesel so we took the bypass to NTA road and still nothing. We had to come back and start the maintenance with our fingers crossed. It went fine and we were back home for lunch which was jollof rice and fried chicken. After that we settled down to enjoy a george benson vcd and then ended up with the sunday sunday tonic we call "siroo" which is the pro evolution soccer on sony playstation 2. It was indeed a wonderful day and the weather is quite hazy.

Woke up by about 5am today and went to look for diesel which I found at N85 a litre only to discover that I did not carry enough money. It was not a very cool experience. Got back home and to the office, everywhere seems to be very empty today. Had to take my mom to the owerri bus stop at rumokoro as she was going to Lagos by air. We in Port Harcourt are not finding it funny since the International airport there was closed down. I hear the rivers state governor has released money for the immediate and quick upgrade of the facilities at the airforce base to enable it accomodate bigger planes. This travelling by road to owerri, a journey of 1 hour normally has now become 2 hours due to the bad road. My mom took a chachiangi flight and called to say she had just boarded. I was in the office carried away by some procedures when it occured to me that more than 2 hours had passed since my mom called so I decided to call her; you never can tell this days whether the flight has decided to take a rest someplace only to discover she had landed tey tey and was even having her siesta at the guest house. I am really not still comfortable with the state of our aviation industry but I must confess, its still the fastest way of moving around.

New Office

Its been a month since I was posted from the cyber cafe to a government setup and really I am still adapting to the culture of the place. Its an Info Tech facility and I am looking forward to contributing a lot. Unlike the former place where my working hours were very flexible, I have to sign an attendance register latest by 8am 5days a week. The funniest part is that you sign in and even though there is a column for signing out, no body fills that part. The Internet connection there is very fast and the place is air conditioned and spacious. I will be working basically with a web interface and network administration. I still get to visit the cybercafe especially on weekends and some evenings.

I just realized this morning that the symptoms of restlessness and tiredness was a sign of malaria; so I decided to get an antimalaria medicine. The whole place is one how and it was in the news papers that I understood that public civil servants in nigeria will having some games arrangement in the university campus. The harmattan is not yet intense but the holiday feeling is everywhere. In the office, we are carrying out a lot of systems upgrade starting with the Wide Area Network, although its moving quite slow; things are happening. Some students who are tired of staying at home are already coming around, especially those who stay off campus.

Break
« #164 on: November 18, 2006, 12:36 PM » |

Its been 2 weeks since the choir in the church I attend went on break, they normally do so like twice in a year; talk of an annual leave. I too can do with some kind of a break. The cyber cafe is empty and to make things worse, NEPA have take the light (gbosa). I think its a saturday and the east west road by uniport junction is blocked with all kind of vehicle. Maltina is scarce and I don't know why.

Worked very late into the morning sunday, collating a questionnaire that is to be administered to ICT and library users in some select Nigerian universities. The weather this morning is very misty; visibility has been reduced. Spent the morning trying to sleep and eventually gave up when the public electricity started behaving like a christmas tree. Did some ironing and read a newspaper article on the ijaws of gelegele; they having some problem with the oba of benin who they say claims they are slaves or something. It all boils down to oil resources. This our country will be better off without oil wealth. Our human resources remains largely under developed.

ATM 1
« #166 on: November 21, 2006, 04:50 PM » |

Its amazing the number of things guys do just in order to get/keep the attention of a damsel but that is not what i want to talk about today. I opened an account with Intercontinental bank as I ranked them very high in IT deployment. They had just opened a branch in the university and were saying that the account is locked to an ATM which will be issued (i was made to believe almost immediately at the worst - 3 working days), to start with their branch at the university park campus should be described as a cash office even though it has an ATM machine and a VSAT, its small. Getting my withdrawal booklet took me like 8 days; it was then I knew that the ATM card might take up to 8 months; its about 5 months since then and nothing has happened.

For about 2 days now, there has been some form of cleanup at the office, a lot of old heavy IBM monitors were carried about and my legs started shaking. This people want me to have muscles by force and I have told them that the my girl friend's name is not Diana Ross. My body is still responding to the harmattan weather and the campus is very active with federal civil servants doing their games. The difference between the public and private sector is very wide, there is very little motivation. If your coming from a private setup that is structured to a public place you tend to do well if you keep your focus.

Boredom
« #168 on: November 26, 2006, 03:10 AM » |

It was yesterday when I got the information that the Rivers State government made a request to NEPA to switch off electricity to Port Harcourt and its environs during the day because of the gas turbine project which they are connecting. In the absence of electricity how can one keep busy especially with this harmattan weather? I read the newspapers till sleep over came me then the university generator was switched on for 2 hours during which I did some work on the computer and had lunch and back to the newspapers when it was switched off again. Wow!!! the cybercafe which would have taken away some of my boredom has been shut down this saturday to reopen on monday because of the increase in diesel overhead. Took a bath to cool off and then also gave the car a bath and took another bath again. Thank God for the outside tank; at least I don't have to worry about water.

Woke up today feeling quite cool, although it was a Sunday morning I planned to reach church in the afternoon. My project proposal is running behind schedule and I need to do some other things. Thank God there is electricity today. It was past midday when I decided to have my bath and take a drive to church but a phone call changed all that. Had lunch of the usual sunday jollof rice with fried chicken and continued with the work on hand. There was some good music blarring from the speakers and it really helped. The usual sunday group were coming around and it was not long before I had to switch off my laptop and switch on the playstation 2.

All through this week, I have been a resource person with digital bridge institute which has a training program for select academic staff of nigerian universities. For the south south zone, the Information and communication training centre of the university of port harcourt was the venue. On this particular day, I decided to dress corporately and right from the house I could not help smiling. I am a typical African man, like fela I don't see anything in dressing like a gentleman especially with this our hot weather. Anyway my mom started, , you look sharp today that's nice, my sister was like wow u look good. On the road, the gardener that normally rides past me without even blinking called my name with a loud "oga good morning" and I was like "spare me" In the bus and now in the office, my colleague was "this must be your wedding day" - I just smilled. The way you dress really matters afterall,

Have you entered bush before?
If I remember now, I did have a slight pain in my stomach or something but I simply brushed it off. By 3.42pm, things changed and my whole stomach seemed to have turned into a factory. I needed to use the toilet fast; but I did not have any tissue paper. I took the toilet key and went inside. The toilet was flooded with water and it dawned on me that I will have to like fela use water to wash my yansh when I finish. I did not waste any time in unloading. Luckily there were buckets and big basins so I took time to really wash up and then flush the toilet.
What a condition? About 30 minutes later, I had to leave what I was doing and run home because I needed to use the toilet again. Thank God, I leave nearby and since I had something important doing on the computer in the office, I took the car and went back. 2 hours later, I had to speed back home for yet another visit to the "white house" and still yet had to return back to the office to conclude what I was doing. This time I took a mixture of some medicines and hoped I did not have to go for a fourth round. Thank God it worked

I wonder who designated December 1 as World AIDS day; even on the google web site there was a symbol of a red ribbon which I got to understand while watching a documentary on aljazeera news indicates that such a person is having AIDS. Indeed, there is an increase in the awareness of the global epidemic - that is what they call it.
Personally, I don't see AIDS as an epidemic because you can by your way of life and certain actions prevent yourself from getting it; preventing mosquito from biting you in Africa is like trying to remain alive inside a coffin that has been buried 6 foot under. I also don't believe that condoms is the best way of protection; abstinence and faithfulness (in marriage) is a far better deal.
Is there a world malaria day? I think more people have died from malaria and the worse part of it is that they could have been treated.

Yam Power
« #173 on: December 05, 2006, 03:08 AM » |

Today was something else; I just did not seem able to get myself out of the house and into the cyber cafe. Infact I did not want to leave the house. Some friends came and reluctantly I followed them to Rumola for some shopping; but before then I had a breakfast of Yam and egg stew. When we returned, I had some lunch of Yam and beans. Its been a while since I ate Yam and in any case I was enjoying it. By evening I had Yam and fish; my stomach now was very full and almost protuding. It then occured to me that visiting the white house (aka toilet) will not be a bad idea but my visa had expired. Now I was very uncomfortable and could not sleep at night. Thank God, at the very least I could keep myself busy via the internet. Yam is more powerful than Garri; is there something like World Yam day?

Not much is happening around this days, its amazing the type of politics am seeing in my new posting. You have to be a skilful diplomat trying to balance everything; so many unstructured interactions and a lot of nonsense. From the outside you will expect so much but nothing is happening with a lot of people. The governor has declared a holiday for state civil servants to enable them give the president a rousing welcome as he comes to commission the gas turbine and some of the federal civil servants have used the opportunity to be absent from work. The cleaners don't sweep and nobody queries them, the messenger wants to do the job of an administrative officer and nobody says "jack", tomorrow they will say their salary is small. What a country!!!

The harmattan weather is really starting to take its toll on the university. The nights are quite cold and the day smelling of burnt grass and all. The sun is not really hot and one does not sweat like that. At choir rehearsals the other day, there was no need to bring out the standing fans as the weather was cool. Driving on our pothole ridden roads is not as bad as in the rainy season. Infact, this is the time that the construction industry should be booming assuming all things were equal. Christmas is in the air and everyone seems to be in a relaxed mood; my body is still adjusting to the weather and maybe I should start doing some physical exercises. The rate at which I shave has increased from once to twice a week. I want to go visiting this evening but lets beginning to have my doubts.

Did it just occur to me that persistence pays? Maybe not, but does it really? is it always for the good? Due to the season, the cybercafe now closes by 5pm officially, in reality we close by 6.30pm. The cybercafe has an installed capacity for 25 client user systems of which 15 are operational for now. At about 5.15pm, only 3 systems where in use and one of them wanted to buy an hour to which I replied that we were closing by 6pm and so he won't finish his time. Some people came after 6pm and wanted to buy time to which I refused that we had closed, and they left. Then my former lecturer came and I was OMG; I could not tell him that we had closed so he started using the system. Another guy came in and said he had a ticket which he brought the previous day; by this time I had switched off all the remaining systems. He went on to say that he will not be in the university environs the next day which I believed was a lie. In any case, I switched on the system and he finished his time; my lecturer was still there and it was pass 7pm when they lock the back gate meaning I will have to trek round.
Just then, he got up paid for his time and printout then left and I started walking in the direction of the gate that was locked, even though I saw people walking past me to pass the long way, I still persisted. When I got there, the security vehicle was parked there and 3 people were there insisting that they must pass the gate even though it was past 7pm. Looking back, I have experienced when they lock the gate by 6.45pm and I went round but today might be different and it was because they opened the gate for us to pass through and indeed I learnt a lesson.

Work was on the light side today; don't know if it was because of the weekend. Have some new guys working with us temporally and they got all talking about "relationships" which is one topic I am not very interested in. In any case a fact was established; money is not every thing but it sure comes in handy. Left work well after 5pm and went home; would have gone to the cyber cafe but was not in the mood to go anywhere. I wonder how this weekend will be. The PDP fever is in the air, they are conducting their governorship primaries and petrol is scarce. Meetings are being held in strategic places around town; you can notice it by the number of brand new government cars parked outside with mobile policemen keeping watch in groups.

As early as 8am today, I was at computer village which covers some streets at the Ogbunabali area here in Port Harcourt. My flash drive was bad and I needed a replacement amongst other things. The first offer I got was 3k5 for a 1GB san cruzer product and it looked good on face value but a careful examination of the packaging did not impress me. They brought other products like lightwave and still others more but I was not still convinced. I decided to check another store and there I saw the lexar product and it was cool only that a 1GB was going for 10k. It then occurred to me that I should check the web to ascertain the real cost of the product and then compare to know if they should send it or whether I should get it from the US. There are fuel queues all over the place with few stations having petrol; I hope its a temporal situation.

This is one of the days that I don't particularly look forward to even though it is a day that the Lord has made. Getting to sleep last night was not easy; actually I remember looking at the clock and seeing 1AM then the next thing I knew my phone was ringing and a look at the clock showed 4.45am. The caller was being mischievous or so I thought. She did not have much to say because after she dropped we resorted to chatting via sms. They kept flying to and fro; in any case going to sleep was out of the question as I might end of over shooting. I finally left the house for church by 6.45am; the fare had been increased due to fuel scarcity. Church was not particularly interesting; I suspect it was the fan that was put directly behind me that blew away all my interests - It was actually cold. To make matters worse we had rehearsals after church and by the time I got home at 5.20pm; I was thoroughly exhausted and that was how I fell ill momentarily and had to confine myself to my air-conditioned room and also to my bed. I have to recover before work tomorrow.

The bus I entered today while going to work was a moving piece of metal. That such a bus will be allowed to carry university students within the campus shows that the students representatives have been compromised. Many students kept complaining on how the new administration installed a "puppet student union executhief" whose only achievement is the increase of compulsory dues from N200 to N2000 which they intend to share amongst themselves. The bus eventually came to a halt opposite the roman catholic church and trust the lamentations and insults that followed. The driver quickly opened the engine compartment and touched something which enabled the bus to start. Coming back from work was even worse, the tyre simply burst and I just resorted to trekking home as I simply have had enough of this nonsense. If in a small community like this university rubbish like this is allowed to happen then what about the general uneducated community?

Its been a while since our "friends from the underworld paid the university a courtesy visit" so when the ratatatatatatata started some minutes after 9am, not everyone was surprised. This time around as at other times their target was the banks in the choba campus. The only surprise was that they came in the day time. They numbered about 15 in all and were strategically positioned inside and outside the campus even at the uniport junction on the east - west road. In the twinkling of an eye the entire area was like a graveyard; after continuous barrage of heavy gunfire for like 35 minutes they were gone leaving in their trail, sorrow, tears and blood. Some people said that WILBROS was supposed to pay their staff some money that day but it appears they suddenly changed their mind. The level of distruction was massive; all FG numbered cars were riddled with bullets. Infact one bullet made a straight line from the boot of a peugeot 406 through the back chair then the dashboard and then right out the front of the bonnet. People were running in every direction and of course there was no police or security man in sight; infact the "monthly visitors" passed the main gate in their coming in and going out.

We have come to that time of the year when everything seems to slow down and the zeal to reach the office reduces. A lot of people are saying merry christmas but I am not interested. There is an abundance of fuel scarcity and the price is now N100 a litre for petrol. Transport fares have increased by at least N30 in most places. Good employers like mine have paid this month salaries by 20th into the bank but alas the banks are now saying there is not enough cash. Am looking foward to the holidays because I intend to rest and do some stamina building routines.

After selling all their land and using the proceeds to buy cars, drink alcohol and carry women, the average niger delta youth resorts to crime. Looking around me, I can't help but be alarmed at the attitude of my fellow country men. Indeed I pray everyday that the oil companies should leave or better still the oil should dry up so that we can rediscover ourselves. How about our elders? To develop a piece of land you genuinely acquired in most niger delta communities especially in rivers state now is like going to a battle field. You have to spend nothing less than five hundred thousand naira assuming you have a plot to "settle" no "bribe" the youth association, chiefs association, market women association, local government somebody, etc, etc, etc before you can even as offload a bag of cement. Of course you have to hire some aspects of the labour to the village youths who may now offer to collect fifty thousand naira in lieu of their services and you pay them and go and hire skilled labour so that your house does not collapse on top of you and your children tomorrow. If they invest this money in genuine cottage industries, then this country should be the largest economy in Africa but no. The politicians from the zone are not helping matters as they go about "donating" all the leftovers that they have not syphoned out of the country. When will all this end?

What happens when all of a sudden you stop enjoying things you previously liked? The political situation in the country though dynamic has suddenly created a this interest in my system, I just go blank when in the political section of nairaland. Not much is happening, supposed to be on holidays. Everyone seems to be travelling but the idea has not crossed my mind. Infact going outdoors does not seem very fascinating. Good music still creates a spark and thankfully I have just discovered a jazz tv channel - talking about trade and tourism channel on Pas 7/10 ku satellite where south african music is show cased. Their bass lines are simple yet uniquely particular to that area of Africa. Their videos show case the natural environment that God has bestowed on them; its such a blessing.

Its christmas day which incidentally is my Mom's birthday. Sent a lot of sms between 12am - 1am and now its 10am I am still trying to get myself into the bathroom. I won't have breakfast so that I can have space to eat 1 heavy meal midday. Find it easier saying good morning today than merry christmas. Trendtv went off 2 days ago and its so disappointing; actually I smelt a rat when some of their prime channels suddenly disappeared about 2 weeks back. To all those out there who read my journals especially outside the country as those who are in the country will probably be in their villages where Internet penetration is limited; I say "Merry Christmas" and that out of courtesy. Please pray for the peace of Nigeria.

A visit to a friend's house in another part of Port Harcourt brought me to the reality of darkness. Its like where am staying is heaven, most of Port Harcourt is in darkness which is made worse by the absence of Petrol to run private generators. Not many people travelled to their villages this time around as there is no money in circulation. I wonder if its because EFCC has frozen the Rivers State bank accounts. I hear that in the black market, petrol is now N250 a litre, did someone just say that democracy is a good thing? This country na wa - ya ya ya ya ya. There is a heat that comes with darkness especially in the day time.

Busy Day
« #187 on: December 28, 2006, 11:12 AM » |

By 3am it occurred to me that I had been awake for a while; all attempts to go back to sleep were unsuccessful so I decided to make some calls. The recipients were not in any mood for long discussions so I dropped and went to browse. On getting to the parlor, I noticed a note from my Dad informing me of the need to reload his laptop. This was already 5am so I proceeded to use the factory recovery disks only to run into some challenge. By 10am, I was still unable to work around it so I left it to go and look for petrol which I got miraculously for N105 a litre. That is how bad things have got in this our dear country yet the "leaders" are still talking rubbish. Back to my troubleshooting of the laptop and still no much headway by 6pm. It was about 7pm that I finally had to restart the whole process using my own program disks to load the Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop and surprisingly it worked. The weather has suddenly become colder even with the harmattan and going to bed in darkness was not a problem as the night was cold.

Was woken up by a phone call from a friend at 7.05am who informed me that the fuel station in the university was about to start selling. I rushed down to the place without thinking and queued up as the 8th car from the pump. By 10.30am, the manager of the station came and without any apology announced that petrol will be sold to the over 60 cars with one pump at N67 and jerrycans at N90 with the other pump. The bottomline was that the tanker did not bring the whole 33000 litres but around 11000 litres. While the pump selling N90 was moving smoothly the other was having one problem or the other. If the cars did not block everywhere, the attendant suddenly disappeared. Infact, even jerrycans where being sold at that pump. The whole game plan we recognized was to make as much money by the petrol station. It was about 1.50pm that officials of the DPR came and the station manager immediately ordered both pumps to sell to cars, that was how I got petrol at about 2.05pm. This country is indeed the greatest.

Driving round Port Harcourt is made easy this time of the year as the street are largely empty and it might not be unconnected with the absence of petrol. Transport fares are quite high and staying indoors or going to places within a walking distance makes a lot of economic sense. The weather has been predictable harsh and washing clothes is quite interesting as they are sure to dry. Trying to rest as much as possible.

In everything give thanks for this is the will of God, , finally the year has come to an end and all thanks and praise to God. Am putting finishing touches to my resolutions which will empower me in the coming year. Looking back now, I can say that everything was not as I wanted it to be but God knows best. The public electricity situation on campus has deteriorated but the university administration has been up to the task by making the generators functional during this festive period. Thank God the fuel scarcity did not affect diesel. I am looking forward to a year of spiritual invigoration and establishing quality relationships with reasonable people.

Year of Rest, Year of Manifestation, Year of Completions, Year of this and Year of that and the people continue to suffer. As long as we continue playing the ostrich, this country will not achieve anything. Truth even the whole truth is very scarce in the mouth of many citizens today but lets leave that "talk" for another day. Am still trying to put together my whole menu of resolutions and guidelines. The weather is really cold at night this days and with the electricity being more and more unavailable within that period its quite refreshing for sleep.
