Reading as a hobby
« #192 on: January 03, 2007, 04:05 AM »

Knowledge they say is power and so I have decided to do a lot of reading this year. The new year and sallah hollidays gave me some time to do just that. Developing a reading culture is one thing we need to do in  this country of ours so as to have a healthy mindset but its not easy. Public electricity is still very epileptic.

What a Day?
« #193 on: January 05, 2007, 04:03 AM »

Got to work tired and sick; if the truth be told, i hardly slept at night. The harmattan weather coupled with the holiday hangover seems to be affecting most people as the offices are largely empty. By midday I was quite weak as I did not have any encouragement to have breakfast in the morning. Was forced to find a restaurant to eat fried rice with moi - moi but even that is tasteless. I left the office about 4.20pm and decided to spend the evening indoors lying down to rest. What a day?

Bad Weather
« #194 on: January 14, 2007, 05:49 AM »

This harmattan weather has not been favourable to many people. I'd like to believe that the fuel scarcity and the weather have an indirect relationship - I bought it at N120 a litre today here in Port Harcourt. Airports have been closed. The cold dust especially at night has brought about cough and catarrh in people whose body immune system has been compromised. Let it Rain.

Moving Smog
« #195 on: January 15, 2007, 01:02 AM »

Smog is a mixture of smoke and fog which is frequent in the harmattan dry season. This evening was something else, from no where the entire university community and its surrounding evirons where surrounded with the dense material which made your eyes red and your lungs irritated. It was observable inside the houses whether the windows were locked or the air conditioners were on. Thank God, it eventually cleared after like 5 hours. Got to participate in the voter's registration because a center was located in our church premises to make use of the electricity from the generator.

Scarce Commodity
« #196 on: January 17, 2007, 01:41 PM »

Its no more news that good single women are in short supply; what is making the waves now is the scarcity of petrol across the country. From Sokoto to Ikot Ekpene, Ikeja to Maiduguri and Yenagoa to Katsina, its the same thing and our political leadership has failed to declare a state of emergency. The price of petrol from the pump in Port Harcourt is N120 if you cannot wait to queue for four hours. Transportation prices have increased and its the common man that continues to suffer.

Value System Modification
« #197 on: January 21, 2007, 06:00 AM »

Quite a lot happened this past week which reshaped my values. One of them was a visit of the sick at the university of port harcourt teaching hospital. The other was the attack by armed robbers of a friend of my director who reportedly has "taste"  The man flaunts his wealth in the name of "taste"; right now he is cooling his body in one private hospital. Riches and prosperity should be a tool for development and empowerment of a nation and not the consumption of a few. We cannot in the event of death which is sure to come take anything away with us. With the worsening fuel condition; the frequency of public electricity outtages is on the rise and its not surprising that another manufacturing company - michelin has announced its decision to leave the country.  What are our leaders doing?

Trekking Permit
« #198 on: January 23, 2007, 11:19 PM »

This new year is just pregnant with a lot of unpredictables; just got a permit from nnpc to trek. When you see the long queues of students and all waiting to enter taxis that are still queueing at the petrol stations to buy fuel at N120 a litre then wisdom will be profitable to direct. So I trek to work and trek back home, luckily my house is a trekking distance.

Weekends Only
« #199 on: January 27, 2007, 02:37 PM »

My schedule has gotten so tight that my visit to nairaland is very infrequent. I have decided to allocate some time during my weekends to update my journal. This week has been very eventful. My best friend annoyed me with a statement that bothered on being positive minded and then another of my friend was threatened by student union officials at the university petrol station in the name of fuel scarcity which is still not getting better.

INEC Holiday
« #200 on: January 29, 2007, 07:52 AM »

Today is a public holiday to enable federal civil servants who have not registered with INEC to do so. I did mine 2 weeks ago and intend to use today to make up on lost time with regards to other miscellaneous activities. Might actually go looking for petrol as I expect traffic to be light. I also have some installations to do at the cyber cafe but that should be in the early part of the evening.

One of Those Things.
« #201 on: February 01, 2007, 05:20 AM »

How time flies? 2007 which seemed like yesterday is already 1 calendar month old. Went to Mr. Biggs last night to celebrate a friend's interview with celtel at asaba (yeah, its that bad) and got hit by an "oppressor". To start with am not a fan of Mr. Biggs or night driving, i got my tongue burnt from the hot meatpie and now developing a sore throat. I have made up my mind never to enter any fast food joint to eat for the remainder of the year. Its never too late to make up a new year resolution.

Darkness in the Land
« #202 on: February 03, 2007, 11:08 AM »

PDP is having their south south convention at the liberation stadium here in Port Harcourt and the immediate effect is a power outtage from PHCN. Barbing hair is now N100 with generator and this people are still yanning their own. I don't blame them because there is no alternative to the darkness that is in the Land even inside church sef e dey.

Thank God for the Rain
« #203 on: February 06, 2007, 09:37 AM »

Port Harcourt experienced her first rains in the past two days and the weather has been very cool so much so I took a long walk with friends from the office in the permanent site up to the east west road. Nature has a way of healing you once you appreciate its beauty; one rare specie of bird kept trying to break the sliding window in our office and enter only to run away when the cleaner opened it fully.

The Great Trek
« #204 on: February 07, 2007, 10:02 AM »

Came out of my house today to meet a great angry multitude on foot; petrol is still scarce and the price even higher. An attempt by the transporters to increase the fare by N10 has led to some student action so the few buses on the road have been withdrawn. Luckily as a staff I got a ride from another but what are the leaders doing?

GSM PROMOTIONS
« #205 on: February 08, 2007, 05:18 PM »

Have you considered the manner of promotions being done by GSM coys in Nigeria? I received an sms from glo telling me to vote african footballer of the year that the sms will cost N200 and i stand to win N200000 or so. When I sent the sms they took my N200 but now said I must recharge with at least N1000 cumulatively before a certain date to qualify for the draw; it was not funny at all.

Pray for Nigeria
« #206 on: February 09, 2007, 09:44 PM »

All the Banks in the city of Port Harcourt were closed down today late morning due to the activities of armed robbers which left some people dead including naval personnel. The weather was wet as it appears the rains have started. Please pray for our great country.

Powerful Sermon
« #207 on: February 12, 2007, 03:24 PM »

Church service was very tight today; the pastor preached on developing a high sense of family and the illustrations used were very persuasive. How can a family that earns five hundred thousand naira a month pay their house help two thousand five hundred naira??? The sunday was very nice and I easily defeated my friend on all the football matches played in PS2.

Happy Valentine
« #208 on: February 13, 2007, 10:03 PM »

Not looking forward to February 14 probably because I don't have a human lover and really I wonder if its necessary at this point in time. In any case we have not had nepa light 2 days now in the university campus so I have to find time to go buy petrol at N120 per litre for our private generator.

Post Valentine analysis
« #209 on: February 15, 2007, 09:22 AM »

I cannot help but comment on the marketing nature of valentine which is now linked to the bad side of capitalism. A lot of churches devised one program or the other to tap into the situation. Funnily enough some people  went to both activities in the church and shows in the clubs and hotels. Some government official in one city in Asia made the news by imposing a curfew from 10pm to dawn so that young people go home early.

Mixed Grill
« #210 on: February 17, 2007, 09:02 AM »

When last did you catch someone in the "act" or get caught yourself? I had to run home twice today from the office due to a over productive stomach. I have been eating rubbish outside the house.  Since it was weekend; I decided to engage in midnight calls on GLO network and this guys just finished my money. They had put a promo that those that recharge with at least N1000 are entitled to free night calls on - net but I guessed they changed their mind.

Consumer Opinion
« #211 on: February 18, 2007, 02:20 AM »

Because of the warped nature of our economy, the average consumer in nigeria is a slaves messenger. There is no mechanism for feedback even in such areas as communications. The reltel network i use at home has been misbeenhaving and all calls to their helpdesk numbers have gone largely unanswered yet they are advertising in the newspapers and trying to lure by deceit more clients. In Port Harcourt for now only starcomms and mtn appear to mean business.

Go Slow
« #212 on: February 23, 2007, 08:37 PM »

It took me 90 mins to move a distance less than 1km on Aba Road in Port Harcourt between Garrison and GRA junction. The entire stretch of road was now one big river and cars were getting flooded. The rain just would not stop and the people kept cursing the governor. At a point I had to abandon the taxi and look for an okada because I was going back to UniPORT and time was not on my side at all. Meandering from D/Line into GRA and finally to Rumuokuta it was the same story; all the roads flooded and the cars at a standstill due to impatience. It appears the flooding this year might be worse than the last.

TrendTV is Back
« #213 on: February 24, 2007, 11:38 PM »

TrendTV has resumed test transmission with 3 channels - Silverbird Television, EWTN and Nigeria's premier home video channel - Nollywood. They said more channels will be added; where is the electricity or even time to watch TV. I wish them the best of luck because I believe they have the best structure to give DSTV a run for their money but we will have to wait till then.

Fundamental Basics
« #214 on: March 03, 2007, 06:39 AM »

What is the use of having a tv and satellite dish when you don't have the time to watch em? NEPA has taken their performance to another level and there is widespread darkness in the land. The fuel situation seems to be improving and the sight of the new naira notes did bring some sort of temporal happiness but there is still no electricity. Our home ISP is more stable than before even though its still slow.

NEPA magic
« #215 on: March 05, 2007, 10:16 PM »

This people should be in the guiness book of world records; am referring to NEPA. They just brought a bill for the cybercafe amounting to some N300 000 and the management has told them in very clear language that it does not intend to pay 1k with respect to that phantom bill. As a matter of fact, they have been asked to disconnect and take away both their poles and cables as they constitute a death trap serving as a good conductor of lightning strikes which has dealt enough havoc to our equipment and an agent of continuous darkness.

MEDIA MAGIC
« #216 on: March 08, 2007, 11:14 AM »

From the blues came the report that the PDP presidential aspirant was sick and later dead.  Its very funny how such reports spread like wildfire; thank God they did not add buried. That the man has a health condition is no longer news but what surprises me the most is how the vice president defeats all his opponents in the court rooms. Can he really be the messiah we are expecting. I don't hear much on Pat Utomi these days.

MTN MAGIC
« #217 on: March 09, 2007, 08:34 PM »

For the past three days now, making and receiving calls on my MTN line has been a challenge. The rate at which calls drop is so high and clarity of voice calls so bad I wonder what is happening. Someone said he called for less than a minute and was not charged; what is really going on? I don't know what will happen; if I should move to CELTEL but there is so much credit on that line.

Great Country
« #218 on: March 14, 2007, 03:38 PM »

I went for a project proposal defense today and it was incredible. To start with we had to show our appreciation via a brown envelope which amounted to N2000 per head. Then when the defense started by 11am, food was arranged again by us for the examiners who on receiving the items declared the seminar closed by 2pm and postponed for the remaining of us till the next week at which time again another item 7 will be arranged. To say that I was angry is a misnomer but what can I do?

GLO MAGIC
« #219 on: March 16, 2007, 04:20 AM »

There is 2 days now since glo network went down. I don't know if its the rain because celtel also went down but came up after 24 hours. Its convocation weekend in the university this week and am getting ready for the partying that accompanies it. The NEPA guys are tried to do what they do best but the authorities have made provision for enough diesel so the effect is not felt much.

GLO CHALLENGE
« #220 on: March 18, 2007, 06:24 AM »

It was this morning that I heard that some "unknown soldiers" from the local government authorities forcefully entered into the glo cell site inside the university campus and switched of the generators that glo has not paid them revenue.  This is the type of country that we find ourselves inside and yet the government will say foreign investors should come; to do what i ask?

Little order
« #221 on: March 20, 2007, 09:05 PM »

This week is a lecture free for freshers to enable them complete their registration process but some lecturers it appears are not observing the arrangement. Work is quite tedious and I hear the price of petroleum products is about to rise. There is some info about political violence here and there but all is calm in this citadel of learning.

HEAT & DARKNESS
« #222 on: March 25, 2007, 06:07 AM »

The once serene environment in the university campus has been hit by the dark forces of NEPA aka PHCN which appears to have been permanently cut off. The nights now are very hot and one has to resort to moving from the bed to the floor in order to gain some form of rest; yet the politicians are causing traffic jams at every junction misyarning.

Do or Die Affair
« #223 on: March 29, 2007, 12:26 AM »

I have come to the conclusion that unionism in Nigeria is a effort in futility. The recent strike action by ASUU is an effort in futility outwardly because inwardly there has been an understanding that all educational institutions be close for the month of April during the elections to minimize the casualty rate. This do or die affair is not something you debate or meditate on.
